Hi Guys,

I'm relatively new to modding Skyrim as much as I am right now, and I've run into an issue where some of the characters from the base game, particularly humans are getting affected by that dark face bug, where the characters' heads are very dark and do not match the tone of the rest of their bodies.

I can't figure out how to fix the issue and would be more than happy to provide any files or logs that I need to provide in order to fix it!

I've recently moved to MO2 from Vortex and started modding from scratch so there aren't any remnants of vortex in my system.

I have Nemesis and FNIS installed (but I'm only using Nemesis)

and I run LOOT on my load order to make sure there aren't any issues in that sense.

Here's my Mod List taken from the modlist.txt in my MO2 profile: (they're listed in upside down order for some reason)

I was able to temporarily fix the issue by downloading this Face Discoloration Fix Mod, but I have a feeling that this isn't a great permanent solution especially since I plan on adding more mods down the line.

That bug generally means you have two mods with conflicting edits to the same NPC - one providing a new appearance and another changing something else. My best guess would be the NPC overhaul being one side of the conflict, but none of the other mods strike me as likely candidates.

It might help to also have the contents of plugins.txt and a handful of examples of which NPCs have the problem.

Thanks for the advice!

When I initially installed NPC overhaul, I didn't run into issues. It was after I installed Nemesis and rebuilt my bodyslide stuffs that I ran into the issue.

The NPCs affected (that I immediately came across) were:
The Non-radiant characters:

Jarl Balgruuf, Adrianne Avenicci, all the Battle-Borns, Carlotta Valentia, Ysolda.

NPCs NOT affected:
High and Dark Elves, Orcs, any new NPCs (Guards, Added by Mods, and ect.)

Hope this helps!

Caused by a mismatch between body and head.

Most likely caused by AI Overhaul mod. For some strange reason that AI mod is also changing appearance of some NPC's. A lot of patches for that mod but it is still difficult to avoid dark faces. Try to disable AI overhaul mod and test it without saving game (to avoid save game corruption).

You also have 3 High Poly NPC Overhaul plugins. Unless those ESP plugins originate from same mod, they may be causing dark faces if they change the same npc's.

There are several ways to solve problem:

- Uninstall AI overhaul mod (or any other mod with conflicting npc changes)

- Try to change load order of NPC apperance mods (i tried this approach but when fixing one NPC, then another npc suddenly has dark face. Gave up and uninstalled AI Overhaul. Problem solved. AI improvement is nice for immersion but i don't stand around idle and watch npc's anyway).

- Open SSEEdit and find a specific NPC in AI Overhaul resource list (or any other mod that changes NPC apperance but AI Overhaul most likely in your case). You will see all the mods changing that npc. The differences are marked with red color. Edit values or type values for fields without values compared to other mods that are writing values in those specific fields. Sounds complicated but actually quite easy. Save mod changes when exiting SSEEdit. Now you have a custom version of AI Overhaul.esp file. Make a backup of the file (can be found in Skyrim .../Data folder). Avoid doing any changes to that mod in your mod organizer. If you update mod to newer version, then you have to do editing again (unless problem was fixed in newer version).

Oh shoot, yeah it really was AI overhaul mod. When I got rid of it, everything works fine.

Turns out, it was conflicting with High Poly.

It kind of sucks since I do actually like to be immersed in the game, but at least everyone looks the way they should now!

Thanks y'all! ❤️

Don't panic,

Load Ai overhaul before your Npc edit; mod's. its not a conflict it's a load order problem. i use Ai overhaul and Hi poly everytthing replacer's.

if you are using MO2 make sure that the left pane and the right pane load npc' mod's in the same order  and load Ai overhaul before mod's that edit npc's.

Loot does not give a fuck about facegen you have to sort it manually. and trust me it's not that difficult.

here is how i do it.

download and install every Ai overhaul patch available for your load order (trust me just do it, thank me later)

turn off all npc's replacers'

run loot

turn on npc mod's in the same order as they are in the left pane.

block move all npc mod;s up your load order in the right pane of mo2 above the patches and under ai overhaul.

Enjoy Immersion.

Most black face is not a bug or a conflict its a load order issue.
