Creating a mod, question

Well, the topic is maybe not really accurate.

What i want to ask is, if i would create a trait or perhaps an aspiration, how to ensure that it is update and compliant to the Sims update?

This is a total newbie question but before i do anything, i really would an answer to that because i am lost.
