Upscale resolution

Is there anyway to make the game render a higher resolution?

I currently play on a 5120 x 1440 screen, and with it on full screen the graphics feel pixelated even after using the vv_res_patcher tool to customize the resolution.

I tried changing the d3dx.ini file to upscale the game but then the launcher just goes black on launching and I cannot start the game at all.
