How do I change textures with .dds files?

I used BSA extractor on SkyMoMod and took out a few meshes/textures that change Mammoths. I put the files in the correct place...

C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\Data\textures\actors\mammoth (all the .dds files, they go through trex1-3 (plus _n and _m files) and triceratops_2 and _n)

and C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\Data\meshes\Actors\mammoth\character assets (two .nif files)

but, in-game nothing is changed.

I went in creation kit, but saw nothing obvious either. And I don't want to use SkyMoMod, since the only things I want are the mammoth changes.

Did I do something wrong or put the files in the wrong place?

So I kinda figured it out. I instead went for elephants, instead of triceratops.

However. I have mamoth2.dds and mamoth2_n.dds (SkyMoMod misspelled it it looks like), but the textures aren't working. And I moved the mamoth2.nif into meshes, renamed it to mammothbranded, copied that and renamed the copy to mammothwild (don't I need two for both?) and its still not working.

The textures are just purple and featureless. Even though I have all the mamoth and mammoth .dds files that were in SkyMoMod.BSA. I got all of them, some of them, just the ones I needed...and the textures are broken.

That is a lot easier to use. Thanks :)

Still running into the problem of textureless purple skin, though. And I def have all the texture files for both the elephant version and Triceratops from SkyMoMod. Of course, I only tried one at a time, since I don't think having both would work.

You can do 2 things

1. point to the textures in the nif

2. find out the folder structure for the texture and remake it in your data folder.

textures\smm\actors\mammoth\

mammothbranded = the ones giants own

mammothwild = no one owns.

Ah, that was it. I had to do textures\smm...you know, I saw that when it was unpacked I thought maybe that was it, but it didn't click for some reason. I thought it had to be like the other textures in the folder.

Thanks :D
