Veta Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Oh the irony As for the 3d printers , I am more than reluctant , since other than looking cool while they make stuff , they require a lot of expertise and I can't see many things which it can be used to create that aren't work related .
Captain Cobra Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 I can't wait to have my oblivion characters as actual physical objects! As soon as I can figure a way to extract heads from save files, that is.
Queen Bee Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Pfff, you guys think so small. Imagine printable vaginas and dicks from your favorite celebs. "Computer, print off a Brad Pitt for me, would you?"

Want a new butter knife ? Print one Need a new plate ? Print one. Want to get some action figure for a kid's birthday ? Print one. Want a fleshlight ? Print one. Yeah, lotsa non work related shit you could make. Main thing is to wait for the price to get much lower, as well as the material quality increasing. Simply put, any basic plastic items will become rather cheap to make yourself. edit: or to put it more simply how this will change things, imagine instead of buying a keyboard, you buy the non plastic parts, print the plastic parts, assemble, boom keyboard for a fraction of the price.
polluxval Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 want a plastic gun so you can assault a store? Print one. want a duplicate of your deceased ones? Print one. want to print a new pair of eyes in case you get blind? Print one... if you can find the printer that is... im just playing around. i find very interesting the fact we are getting the technology from movies. now ill be able to make me a mask of my favorite actor and get out for some chicks.
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 Well guns are NOT printable, only certain parts. That said, once such systems are devolped further, and metal components can be printed, guns will become quite easy to print.

Queen Bee Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 I'm sure they'll pass a law that requires printer companies to program in a block on gun schematics. It wouldn't even be in violation of the 2nd Amendment.
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 All it will take is someone opening a 3d printing store. If I were to do it here would be the (customer) costs: Basic service fee Fee for amount of time the machine is used by the customer Fee for material used by the printer Applicable taxes Such systems however could see a variety of uses, such as producing more complicated components at factories, and printing plastic parts locally, and having the end product assembled locally as well, and that would likely also defeat a great number of taxes on importing goods as only 'components' would need to be imported from the factory location.

I'm sure hackers will figure it out, but they'll have the measure in place all the same. And of course guns made like that would be extra illegal. Like federal crime illegal.
polluxval Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 that device will surelly increase the ufo/alien sightings.

How would they 'block firearms' at all on this. They could require a filter to block KNOWN schematics, but that would easily be bypassed. More likely is a law to make 3d printers go thru a long and expenseve registration process that makes them only usable by big companies.
