All of this is a bit overwhelming for a newcomer. Where do I start?

Which mods do I absolutely need and which mods should I add on top of that?

1. You absolutely need REDELBE <- look here for REDELBE_2.4.zip file - you need to install it for using all mods. All other files in that thread are only for modders, so you don't need them all.

2. Unzip from the REDELBE_2.4.zip the folder REDELBE and dinput8.dll to your game folder.

3. Then you will be able to download any mods you like from here and unzip them into <your_game_folder>\REDELBE\Layer2\

4. After you install the mod - start the game, and while you select character's costume in the character selection screen, press F key on keyboard (or Back key on gamepad) to select the costume from the mod. Try to press that button on each costume of the character until you find which one the mod replaces, or read in the mod description which costume it replaces to be able to find it more quickly in the game.
