Pop-up messages in the upper left corner never fade

Usually, when a pop-up message appears in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, it fades away after a few seconds. However, for whatever reason, in my game they never go away, only changing when another pop-up overrides it. So for example, if I clicked on a door and my lock-picking level was too low, the game would tell me, and that message will stay up there forever until another message overrides it. it's very annoying and clutters the screen. Is there anything I could do to fix this issue?
