How do you custom realign actors?

I'm trying to use the hotkeys labelled, but nothing seems to happen. In the sexlab animation hotkeys it says to use 'L' to move a character backwards or forwards, but that doesn't do anything. The realign actors key sets them up in the original (albeit inaccurate) position. I can forcibly end the stage, advance the animation, swap positions, and a bunch more. But fine tuning the locations of characters doesn't seem to work.

I have ensured that when I try to alter character positions they are on a flat(or flatish) surface with no interfering objects.

Any help? I'm probably just doing something stupid.
