olonolo Posted September 21, 2018 Posted September 21, 2018 Could someone point me to some basic beginners tutorials on creating and using textures in Skyrim. I'm mainly interested in understanding body textures and the software needed to create them. I have a basic knowledge of photoshop but have no idea of the other programs needed. Thank you in advance.

You need DDS plugins for the programs. And read this: https://beyondskyrim.org/ddstextures/ Hi Mystic Stranger, thank you very very much. I've checked out your link and it looks like I have a lot to learn. Are there any write-ups explaining what each of the files in body textures are for: ie 1.dds, 1_msn.dds, 1_s.dds, 1_sk.dds. I only know 's' is for the specular.
Guest Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 1.dds => Color map 1_n.dds => (often msn) normal map 1_s.dds => specular map 1_sk.dds => soft lighting/subsurface scattering maps (but really not much used.) 1_e => environment map 1_m => environment mask 1_p => Parallax Be aware, depending on shared (skin or other) the accepted textures may vary. The standard NIF texture organization for Skyrim is: 0 Diffuse/Color 1 Normal 2 Glow/Skin 3 Parallax 4 Environment 5 Environment mask 7 Specular
