Extracting

I'm sure I'm coming across as a total dummy by asking this, but I've never had a grasp of computers. At all.

But I want to install this little mod, and so far I'm clearly doing something wrong.

The instructions being with "Extract to main installation folder".

I downloaded the file, then unzipped it straight into my Fallout 4 folder. Isn't that what's meant by "main installation folder"?

I've tried to follow the steps that follow, but they just don't work.

To install mods you must always know where things go to work. IN Fallout 4 (and most beth's games) all the stuff goes inside the DATA folder, not the main folder.
Then, if you're doing a manual install and not using a mod manager, you must look at the folders that came with the mod and read descriptions to understand exactly where everything goes.

Some mods, like F4SE and some dlls goes in the main folder, but any mod that is a plugin (.esp/.esm/.esl), or have folders like meshes; textures; scripts; f4se; etc all goes inside the Data folder.
For the mod you want to install, after extracting see if the extracted folders are like this. If you put a Data folder inside Data folder, for example, it won't work. Search a bit about mod installation and how it works before and it will save you some headaches later lol
