On the Trail quest help

Hey guys I'm having trouble with the On the Trail Quest/ Mia's Lair in that when I talk to Niri I fail the part where it says talk to Niri so I'm unable to recruit her as a follower in the quest. then when I tried to rescue Vess from her restraints after defeating the guy beating her up I was unable to unlock her restraints and the cell itself was doing this shaky thing. I really want to finish this quest right and I can't undo the gas without getting the girl down because for some reason the lever doesn't spawn where it should. Any help would be appreciated

Hmm I just did that part and for me Vess was one of the bandits so I enslaved her and yes, Niri wont speak to me either. No idea what to do unless I sneak into SSEedit.
