About This File
Overhaul of lactation mechanic that also allows milking humans as a source of milk.
Lactation now has several stages and allows one to be milked once a day, if enabled from a new lactation tab.
The more someone is milked, the more lactation progresses into higher stages, increasing milk yield. Note that the yield may vary depending on other factors such as body size and, if you have RJW, breast size also. Below are the comparison of lactation stage "mother" and the highest lactation stage "at limit".
lactation stage "mother" yields a baseline of 10 milk items a day. This is the same rate as vanilla lactation right after giving birth.
The highest lactation stage "at limit", requiring a drug called lacton, yields a baseline of 20 milk per day. Notice the increased nutrition consumption. One milk item has 0.05 nutrition, which means producing 20 of them consumes 1 whole nutrition per day.
Of course, the same way vanilla does, lactation gives a fertility debuff to the pawn, but there is a way to negate the fertility debuff, which is by conditioning them as cattle.
Cattle Conditioning
As people breastfeed or get milked, the more their cattle conditioning progresses into higher stages, which can negate the fertility debuff from lactating. For instance, the more a mother breastfeeds her baby, the higher her cattle conditioning becomes. Were she to breastfeed a baby for 2 quadrums, her cattle conditioning will rise up to the stage which will negate the fertility debuff completely, so she can start having babies again while lactating indefinitely. Breastfeeding only raises cattle conditioning up to this stage, but there are higher stages that can be achieved via actually milking, which also raises cattle conditioning faster. These higher stages also reduce their food consumption, so they can produce milk more efficiently with the downside of reducing work speed, disabling intellectual and artistic work, and slowing their move speed. Below is the highest stage of cattle conditioning that can only be achieved by giving the pawn lacton drug.
This stage disables the pawn from doing all work, and also disables beauty and recreation needs. But most importantly, it makes the pawn only consume 10% of the nutrition other pawns would eat (from 1.6 nutrition per day as a baseliner to 0.16 nutrition per day). Do remember that lactating adds nutrition consumption as well. At its baseline, the maximum stage of lactation and cattle conditioning makes a person consume 1 + 0.16 = 1.16 nutrition per day, most of which is from the lactating, which is converted into milk.
Drugs
The mod adds 2 drugs. The first one is a drug that simply induces lactation starting at a very low lactation stage called milk lily. Milk lily is crafted from herbal medicine only and can be researched from psychite brewing. This drug is meant to be available to tribals.
The second drug, lacton, increases both lactation and cattle conditioning. Crafted like penoxycyline. It can increase both lactation and cattle conditioning even further than just by milking. Note that this drug gives a very high tolerance. For now, there aren't any ill effects. It's not even addictive. But the high tolerance given by each dose is enough to make subsequent doses have no
effect, until you wait out the tolerance to fade away tomorrow. Simply speaking, this drug has no effect if consumed more than once a day.
Stats and Numbers
The highest milk yield per nutrition you can expect without drugging your human cattle is 11.11, which is about the same as a goat would yield. Drugging them, milk yield can increase to 17.24 per nutrition, which is better than a cow but the cattle conditioning at this stage also makes them only as useful as a cow. Body size factors into milk production.
All that milk can be made into nutrient paste meals, tripling nutrition count and allowing human cattles be fed with their own milk sustainably. Is this balanced? In my opinion, it's not, but this is vanilla behavior as you can already feed cows nutrient paste meal made from their own milk. I have considered human cattles having nutrition gain debuff specifically from milk based food, though.
Precepts
This mod adds 2 precepts: one on getting milked and one on lactating.
Milking
By default, people don't like getting milked. To be milked is the same as being treated like a cattle, since their milk is now usable for the whole colony as opposed to just for breastfeeding babies. As cattle conditioning rises, they will then begin to like being milked. I've also added more milking precepts other than the default. Here is the complete set:
- Getting milked: don't care - People won't generally care about getting milked.
- Getting milked: demoralizing (default) - As mentioned above, people will find getting milked demeaning.
- Getting milked: desired - This one gives a mood buff instead.
Lactating
The lactating precept rules which gender should be lactating. You don't normally expect men to be lactating. Well, I said gender, but the term this precept would be using is actually "childbearer". What is a childbearer exactly? Basically, if someone is expected to come out pregnant after a lovin' session, they're a childbearer. In vanilla, this simply means female, but with RJW, it's basically anyone with a vagina (regardless if they have any penises). The vagina doesn't have to be functional either. Even if your pawn only has a hydraulic vagina that has no hope of ever bearing a child, they still count as a childbearer. Here is the complete set:
- Lactating: anyone - Nobody will get a mood debuff if they're lactating. It's socially acceptable for everyone.
- Lactating: childbearer only (default) - Childbearers will not get a mood debuff if they're lactating. Anyone that doesn't have a vagina will get a mood debuff.
- Lactating: non-childbearer only - Counterintuitively, childbearers will get a mood debuff if they're lactating. Anyone that doesn't have a vagina won't get a mood debuff instead. Use this for your hyper female supremacist ideologions, idk. I'm just completing the set.
- Lactating: nobody - Nobody should be lactating. Everyone would get a mood debuff if they're lactating. Q: How do you expect people to reproduce? A: Growth vats.
(Unimplemented) Milking Machines
Milking humans takes a while, so milking machines can speed up the process while also raising lactation and cattle conditioning faster. In exchange, people will hate being milked this way even more than just normal hand milking.
Ex-Human Cattle Update
This update has a lot of changes. For one, maxing out cattle conditioning makes people lose their ideologion and disables them from having a lot of thoughts. A sort of, animal mind-like state. For now, the implementation of disabling thoughts only applies to vanilla thoughts, but I've thought of adding a setting option to allow the player to disable any thoughts found in your game, both vanilla or modded.
Items milked from a human now has a status "milked directly from a person". This mechanic is very similar to Equal Milking's, except that when these milked items are used in crafting, cooking, or fed into a nutrient paste dispenser (vanilla nutrient paste only; nutrient paste expanded is not yet implemented), the product will have "has ingredients milked from a person" status. Consuming these has some implications. For one, as cattle conditioning decreases hunger rate, their hunger will fill up less from eating items that are either milked directly or has ingredients milked from a person. So feeding human cattles their own (or any other human's) milk is no longer profitable.
Human Milk Consumption and Provision Precepts
Depending on their belief, people will hate, enjoy, or even need to consume produce milked from a person directly or has ingredients milked from a person in them. The full set is like this:
- Drinking human milk: abhorrent directly only - People will get a mood debuff if they consume items milked directly from a person.
- Drinking human milk: abhorrent - People will get a mood debuff if they consume items that are either milked directly, or has ingredients milked from a person.
- Drinking human milk: desired - People get a mood buff if they consume items that are either milked directly, or has ingredients milked from a person. This also adds a need that will give them a mood debuff if they don't consume the aforementioned item in 8 days.
- Drinking human milk: desired directly only - People will get a mood buff if they consume items milked directly from a person. This also adds a need that will give them a mood debuff if they don't consume the aforementioned item in 8 days.
I also added a similar set for providing human milk items, that is, having your milk consumed by someone, which will give opinion buff or debuff towards the consumer, but I haven't implemented any opinion stuff yet.
- Providing human milk: hated directly only - "Providing milk that are consumed directly from ourself is a an assault to bodily autonomy. Processed, it's fine."
- Providing human milk: hated - "Providing milk or any other consumables milked or derived from ourself is a an assault to bodily autonomy."
- Providing human milk: respected - "Providing milk or any other consumables milked or derived from ourself is a wonderful act of providence."
- Providing human milk: respected directly only - "Providing milk that are consumed directly from ourself is a wonderful act of providence."
A new meme "human cattle rearing" is added. The meme forces believers to desire human milk. You don't need this meme to have human milk desire on per se. This meme is mostly for roleplay purposes.
Ex-Human Cattle
That's not all. I believe items milked from people deserve a special degree of importance. I introduce ex-human cattles. These are people who, inspite of having maxed out lactation, they have been rehabilitated from the debilitating cattle conditioning, which usually is raised together with said lactation. There are different ways to decrease cattle conditioning.
- Surgery: Requiring three glitterworld medicines, you can revert people's cattle conditioning stages back to the stage that's only effect is negating the fertility debuff from lactating. This method has a similar design philosophy of curing paralytic abasia using a ton of glitterworld medicines.
- Biosculpter: I have added a new biosculpter cycle that allows decreasing cattle conditioning. The difference from the surgery option is that it only takes one glitterworld medicine. There's also another cycle that reduces lactation. You don't generally need this cycle, as the only downside to lactating is if the person's lactating precept makes them hate it, they'll get a mood debuff.
- The third method of decreasing cattle conditioning is tied to the new ex-human cattle meme, which I'll get to in a bit.
After regressing cattle conditioning, be mindful that milking people may still progress their cattle conditioning again. I have added a new item the "cow bell" which should freeze cattle conditioning at the expense of also freezing lactation from progressing as well. The bell has no effect against lacton.
Ex-Human Cattle Meme
This meme makes keeping human cattles a much more interesting effort. After passing an expectation threshold, people will start demanding ex-human cattles in their colony. For every four normal pawn, you should have at least one ex-human cattle. Not meeting this demand gives a mood debuff, but meeting it gives you a mood buff. This demand can partially be met with people who are already lactating with high enough lactation stage but not an ex-human cattle yet.
With this meme, you can also make ex-human cattles in a much cheaper way. This meme enables the human cattle specialist role. The human cattle specialist is a role that can only be given to an ex-human cattle of the same ideologion. This role gives the person the same metabolism of maxed out cattle conditioning, multiplying their hunger rate by 0.1. This makes them super efficient at making milk while still allowing them to work like a normal person. The role allows them to lead two rituals.
- The first ritual, "human cattle rehabilitation", is the aforementioned way to decrease cattle conditioning. This ritual is free and has no cost whatsoever. The only requirement is for the subject's lactation to be at max.
- The second ritual "ex-human cattle blessing" will give a person already turned into an ex-human cattle a permanent buff that allows them to have that same metabolism, making them much more efficient at producing milk while enabling them to work. This ritual has some requirements, however.
Hormonized Milk Pool
Sorry if this mod is getting a bit too wacky, but the ex-human cattle blessing ritual can only be done in a "holy water" pool of some sort, made from a mixture of items directly milked from a human and some milk lilies that will be used to baptize the ex-human cattle. To build this pool, you need 5 milk lilies and 5 items called "human milk mixture". Human milk mixture is cooked from 20 items that are directly milked from a person. This doesn't have to be milk. It can be anything that was milked from a human (not that I added any way to get people to lactate different resource items, but I hope that clears it up). Upon completing the ritual, the pool will be destroyed and the ex-human cattle will gain the blessing.
New Scenario
This update also added a new scenario that makes the first colonist slot generate pawns as an ex-human cattle. They have maxed out lactation and some level of cattle conditioning.
Adult Breastfeeding Update
The mod now adds a new feature that allows breastfeeding adults if enabled in the lactation tab. Well, not just adults, but children too. And since it's different than vanilla breastfeeding, I'll refer to it as "boobfeeding" which is the name I gave it in the code to differentiate from vanilla breastfeeding.
New Weaning Mechanic
Babies now need to be weaned if they ever breastfeed. They get an unweaned health status when they breastfeed, which has no effect on the baby, but it can persist into the baby's childhood and adulthood. Unweaned pawns have a need that makes them seek to boobfeed from anyone who's lactating — including animals — which will then give them a mood buff. Not fulfilling this need simply gives a mood debuff. To get rid of the unweaned status, just don't allow them to boobfeed for 10 days and it'll go away naturally.
Adult Boobfeeding
I have added a precept that makes adults also seek to boobfeed regardless if they are unweaned. Basing it off cannibalism precept balance, they get a mood debuff if they don't boobfeed for 8 days.
Difference from Vanilla Breastfeeding
- Boobfeeding isn't sterile. Unlike breastfeeding babies, boobfeeding children and adults may get food poisoning if the milk item can cause it. On the plus side, they may get the mood buff if the milk item gives a mood buff if consumed. They will need to boobfeed enough nutrition of said item though. If they boobfed less than the item's nutrition, they may not get the mood buff.
- Boobfeeding is initiated by the person who has boobfeeding need. This is very much unlike vanilla breastfeeding, which is initiated by the breastfeeder trying to ensure that a baby is well fed.
- Prisoners don't have boobfeeding need. Since they are generally constrained to their cell, they're unlikely to ever find someone to boobfeed off of.
