Slim played the blues.

It was the right kind of day for it. Willow Creek's hot, muggy summer had finally given way to the cooler, rainy days of autumn. It was raining now, fat wet drops of water falling on pavement and the grass, and probably leaking through the old roof of the beat-up abandoned house Slim was squatting in.

Slim didn't have a home, unless you counted the squat. Didn't have a job, unless you counted the day work the landscaping crew sometimes threw his way. Didn't have a girl. No 'unless you counted' there. Slim liked the hookers who hung around Patchy's Bar well enough, but even when he had the money (and BiBi sometimes offered him a discount) it wasn't the same as having a girl.

He had a family of sorts, if you counted Eric as his dad for knocking up a hooker. For some reason, Eric did. His wife, Mama LeBlanc, didn't even mind having Slim around for dinner sometimes. She knew about her man and the hookers. It gave her something to yell at him about when nothing else came to mind.

All that, of course, made Biggie LeBlanc his half-brother, and Biggie and his crew were good friends to have.

Still, Slim had his reasons to play the blues, and it was a good day for it.

He didn't know it was the day that was going to change his life. Looking back on it, he still wasn't sure how it all happened.

He was sure that if anyone had told him what would have come out of that rainy autumn day playing the blues, when Dirk the Jerk showed up on his doorstep - all the magic and monsters and, strangest of all, love - Slim would have told them it was time to stop drinking.

"My man, Slim," Dirk said with an enthusiastic fist-bump. "How you doing bro?"

"Living and breathing," Slim replied with a grin.

"Slim, this is my girl, Star." Dirk grinned lasciviously at the young woman with him. "Star, this is Slim."

"Hi," Star smiled. "I heard you playing. It was nice but sad at the same time. I really felt it, you know."

"The man can play the blues," Dirk nodded. "Say, Slim, is Biggie around?"

"Nah," Slim shook his head. "He got in some trouble. Mama LeBlanc made him move back in, so she could keep an eye on him. Managed to make it a condition of his parole and all."

"Don't mess with Mama," Dirk chuckled.

"I thought you were in the City," Slim said.

"I was," Dirk nodded. "That's where I met Star, but you know how it is... greener pastures and shit."

Slim nodded, knowing that either meant Dirk was in trouble with the law or had managed to piss off whatever gang he'd fallen in with. Either way, the next question was obvious. "Looking for a place to stay?"

"Well, if you got the room," Dirk smiled.

"Rooms, I got. If you don't mind blankets on the floor," Slim said, leading them inside.

"At least you have blankets," Star said seriously.

"Is there someplace I can freshen up?" she asked, looking around at the cracked and water-stained walls, the ratty furniture and the general state of the place.

"Bathroom's straight down the hall," Slim said. "Sometimes the hot water even works, but I can't make promises."

"Thanks." Star's smile was genuine. "I'll be right back."

"Hate to see you go, but I love watching you leave," Dirk grinned, as if the joke wasn't as old as dirt. "Damn, look at the ass on her," he added to Slim. "I love that ass."

Slim didn't say anything, but he couldn't help sneaking an admiring look of his own at Star's departing backside.

"So, Slim, what happened between you and that girl with the pink hair? What was her name?" Dirk asked as Star's posterior disappeared from view.

"Bubblegum," Slim supplied. "She's still hanging with Biggie's crew. We're friends."

"Just friends, man?" Dirk asked slyly.

"She's with Spider," Slim sighed.

"That jerk," Dirk scoffed. "She's really with him?"

"Oh God, Spider! Yes!" Bubblegum cried. "Fuck me,! Fuck me hard!"

"Tell me you want it, slut," Spider growled, sparing a wicked glance at a startled Slim.

Slim hadn't even known they were hooking up. He certainly hadn't expected to walk in on them going at it, in his squat, on his bed.

"I want it! I want your big cock," Bubblegum squealed, oblivious to anything but what was happening to her. "I want your cum. Fill my little pussy. Put a fucking baby in me!"

"Yeah," Slim nodded to Dirk. "She really is."

-----------------------

"So, anyway, after George T and the other top guys got picked up by the cops, I knew it was time to get out of town," Dirk said a short while later, wrapping up his explanation of why he'd left the City in a hurry.

Slim nodded. It was just the kind of stupid shit he expected from Dirk.

"Is it really OK for us to stay with you?" Star asked.

Both guys looked up at her, a little startled. Slim hadn't heard come back from the bathroom, but thinking about it, he realized she'd been standing there for a while.

"Of course it is," Dirk said confidently.

image.png.ba358efc4b904e0b53417bdad7106675.png

"Absolutely," Slim said. "It's what the place is here for."

It wasn't like it was his place anyway, he thought. It was just a squat, a place for people to crash when they needed a roof (with only a few leaks) over their head, a clean(ish) shower (sometimes, but not often, hot) and a (mostly) safe spot to sleep.

"Well, that's very kind of you," Star said, taking a seat next to him.

"No problem," Slim smiled at her.

Looking back, he thought that putting those two words together at that moment couldn't have been more wrong, but in the end, maybe it was all worth it.
