Changing Body Slots

Like many other things I've tackled in Skyrim, dealing with Body Slots requires the use of tools over and above what the typical mod user needs. Specifically, you need:

TES5Edit

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/25859

NifSkope

http://niftools.sourceforge.net/wiki/NifSkope

and optionally but highly recommended:

Body Slots MCM

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/64976

The Body Slots MCM mod is loaded like any other mod. What it allows you to do is see in the McMenu which slots you are currently using for the items that you currently have. Additionally, and more importantly for this purpose, it will show which Body Slots you have empty (on the assumption that your goal is to change the Body Slots of items that you would like to have along with the ones you currently have).

Having determined which items that are already loaded into your game that have Body Slots that you wish to change, you need to load TES5Edit and NifSkope. You can do each separately but I like having all of this on my desktop at once. Further, you can do the TES5Edit or the NifSkope first, it doesn't really matter. What does matter is to get everything done. Since it is possible that the item that you are changing will not need any work done in NifSkope (that can happen although it has happened to me yet) I will do the TES5Edit portion first.

Aside: This is not a primer on using TES5Edit or NifSkope and assumes a small amount of knowledge on the part of the reader. Good tutorials for both of these programs are available elsewhere.

Open TES5Edit and choose "select none" by right-clicking in the Master/Plugin Selection box.

Then go back and choose the mod that contains the item that you want to change and load it.

Spoiler

Then, flip to armor and expand the tree (why you might want to open any tree other than the two mentioned in a discussion of Body Slots is beyond my comprehension). Find and select the item in which you are interested in the left pane. Go to the right pane and find where the Body Slot is indicated.

There are usually more than one (see what I've highlighted in red) but changing one of them on the right will automatically change the others. To do the change simply right click the current Body Slot and select edit Which I've highlighted in blue). You will get a dropdown menu of all the slots available (which I've highlighted in red).

Spoiler

Choose the one(s) you want and deselect the original one(s) if you do not want them. If you've worked with TES5Edit before you know that it gives a warning whenever you make a change. It is OK to make the change and you can tell it so.

Next, go back to the left hand pane and do the same thing in the ArmorAddon section. Choose the item and change the Body Slot.

THE BODY SLOT MUST BE CHANGED IN BOTH THE ARMOR AND THE ARMOR ADDON SECTIONS!

Now go to Nifskope. Use NifSkope to open the equivalent Nif file.

In many cases, thanks to BodySlide, there will be two such files (note the red arrow below points to the _0.nif). You will need to do them both but the process is identical. Open either the _0 or the _1 file first, whichever suits you. When the image appears scroll down in the top left hand box until you get to a line that says "BSDismemberSkinInstance."

Spoiler

1517274330_Screenshot(146)j.jpg.23237a82b35a2ca4add9032c2c2ddf1c.jpg

Click on this and the lower box should change accordingly. At the bottom of the lower box will be a line that says partitions which will open up if you click on the triangle on the left. This, in turn, will show a line that includes the number and description of the current Body Slot. Double click on that line and a dropdown menu, similar to the one found in TES5Edit will appear (which I highlighted in red below).

Spoiler

Scroll up or down and find the new Body Slot, click and save your work. If needed, repeat with your other nif file (as you would in the example above).

ITEMS THAT WILL BE BUILT IN BODYSLIDE WILL NEED TO HAVE THE BODY SLOT NUMBER CHANGED IN BOTH THE _0 AND THE _1 FILE!

BEFORE SAVING YOUR WORK BE CERTAIN THAT ALL THE CHANGES MADE HAVE PLACED THE ITEM IN THE SAME BODY SLOT. FAILURE TO DO SO WOULD BE BAAAAAAAD! (See Ghostbusters I for the appropriate definition of bad).

Surprisingly, that is really all there is to it. Save everything and go back to playing Skyrim.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Changing the number of overlays (such as for SlaveTats)

(I've decided to put this here since it's short:

Go to Skyrim/Data/SKSE/plugins and double click on nioverride to open it in NotePad (or similar). Go to the [Overlays] section and change the number in iNumOverlays in the section that you are interested in changing (body/face/hands/feet). Save the file. You're done.

You're welcome. That is EXACTLY why I did it. I forget too.

I followed the instructions and it kinda worked for me, but I ran into other problems. on a 3BA version of the Frost witch armor set when I changed the hat to helmet (from circlet) my head vanished, and when I changed the dress to slot 49 (from 45 neck) but when I put on the robes the dress vanishes. Anyone have any idea what is going on? I can submit the specific armor in question as its not from the Nexus (the dress and pieces have physics).

Ironically a few hours after posting this I discovered the source of my woes, which was I chose the wrong slots to use.

What I learned is that the slots are effectively coverings for the character and what they're called has meaning. So for example, slot 49 is labeled as pelvis which is mostly covered up when wearing armor (or the body slot (32) So when something of that slot is equipped, it is disappearing because in the eyes of the game it shouldn't be visible. As for my characters head disappearing, I changed it to slot 30 which covers the head, and since the bodyside files didn't contain a head, one didn't show up.

I managed to successfully change the slots to one something that wouldn't conflict with one of my mods or be overridden by another slot. But if you are having similar issues to me all I can tell you is that the names of the slots have purpose and use some common sense as to what they show or might cover.

what about unnamed slots? I am trying to convert a skirt from slot 52 to 49 and in doing so it goes invisible

I am not going to give the tutorial on armor add on any more than I have NifSkope. Suffice it to say that most armors have both an armor and an armor add on component. For purposes of successfully changing a body slot for an armor, both must be changed.

If the nif in nifskope doesn't have "BSDismemberSkinInstance" but does have "NiSkinInstance", you don't need to make any changes in nifskope.

You can use Outfit Studio and an xEdit script also to change bodyslots if you don't want to use Nifscope just a lil fyi

Hello, thanks for the info to change body slot.

I did a test run on COCO Lace Lingerie Pack lace body03, the MOD only have one NIF file and one OSD file, I successfully change the lace body03 from slot 32 to 38 for the nif (using body slide change slot and delete the body mesh)and esp file, and it works in game!!  but the variation of lace body 03 are gone, all the 3 design of body stocking in game now have the same looking, is there anywhere else (osd file? I assume) I need change to make the variations back?

NVM,, found my answer! it works perfectly now. I don't need delete the body and need keep everything in nif file in same order before edditing.

thanks again!

As usual for me, the simple instructions that everyone said very good, does not work for me. Works fine with xEdit, but everything went south with the Nifskope instruction. Instead of getting a clear "BSDismember..." thing, I have about a dozen "Block" thing and there is a "BSDismember..." part in each of them, so I do not know which to choose. Clicking any of them did not change anything in the bottom panel and I did not get the "Partition" part there.

So, I decided not to proceed. Reinstall the mod to revert the changes I made in xEdit, and will not try to mess with things I am not sure about. Thanks anyway.

it will be a lot easier if you use outfit studio do this "partition" change.  on top right corner under "mesh" select the mesh and go to "partitions" change bodyslot# and apply. some clothing have multiple meshes make sure you change all of them. After save the file, don't forget build in bodysilde

I tried exactly this but when I change my partition slot and press apply it changes but then the type in the dropdown selection changes and I also don't have an option to save the changes. I'm not sure if I'm suppose to open the .nif as an outfit or import it, I've tried both and I can't save doing either. I'm trying to change a slot to 60 so idk if I can't use that slot or what. I'll post a screenshot of what I'm seeing.

I just tried a different slot and it shows in the dropdown selection correctly but I still can't save. I can only select save as and after I do that and load up the item the slot is the same as before I changed it. Idk what I'm doing wrong.

I see the file name is newoutfit, I assume you open the outfitstudio first then drag the nif file to the window to open it, so the program don't know where is the source.

What you should do just open the nif inside bodyslide use this button or in outfit studio file - load project, and the name on the top left should be the one you opened.

after you save the file you need close bodyslide and reopen it, then build the glasses again.

Do remember you still need do the xedit(TES5Edit) ESP part in this tutorial to make the bodyslot change work in game.

Yes thank you. That's what I was doing wrong. I used that button and it worked. And yes I know how to change the slot in SSEEdit. That part was easy, I was just loading the .nif wrong but you helped me with that so thank you.

So I changed the partition in outfit studio and saved it. I also changed the armor and armor add-on slot to the same slot in SSEEdit and for some reason my glasses are still invisible ingame. I really don't know what the issue is.

if you sure you did everything right and rebuilt the item in bodyslide after nif editing,  then unequip everything and try to put on the glasses only, see if it show up or not.

most of the time if the armor invisible is either bodyslot# not match(nif and ESP) or there is another equipped armor already took the bodyslot# (need edit that armor to deconflict)
