Changing Body Slots

Like many other things I've tackled in Skyrim, dealing with Body Slots requires the use of tools over and above what the typical mod user needs. Specifically, you need:

TES5Edit

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/25859

NifSkope

http://niftools.sourceforge.net/wiki/NifSkope

and optionally but highly recommended:

Body Slots MCM

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/64976

The Body Slots MCM mod is loaded like any other mod. What it allows you to do is see in the McMenu which slots you are currently using for the items that you currently have. Additionally, and more importantly for this purpose, it will show which Body Slots you have empty (on the assumption that your goal is to change the Body Slots of items that you would like to have along with the ones you currently have).

Having determined which items that are already loaded into your game that have Body Slots that you wish to change, you need to load TES5Edit and NifSkope. You can do each separately but I like having all of this on my desktop at once. Further, you can do the TES5Edit or the NifSkope first, it doesn't really matter. What does matter is to get everything done. Since it is possible that the item that you are changing will not need any work done in NifSkope (that can happen although it has happened to me yet) I will do the TES5Edit portion first.

Aside: This is not a primer on using TES5Edit or NifSkope and assumes a small amount of knowledge on the part of the reader. Good tutorials for both of these programs are available elsewhere.

Open TES5Edit and choose "select none" by right-clicking in the Master/Plugin Selection box.

Then go back and choose the mod that contains the item that you want to change and load it.

Then, flip to armor and expand the tree (why you might want to open any tree other than the two mentioned in a discussion of Body Slots is beyond my comprehension). Find and select the item in which you are interested in the left pane. Go to the right pane and find where the Body Slot is indicated.

There are usually more than one (see what I've highlighted in red) but changing one of them on the right will automatically change the others. To do the change simply right click the current Body Slot and select edit Which I've highlighted in blue). You will get a dropdown menu of all the slots available (which I've highlighted in red).

Choose the one(s) you want and deselect the original one(s) if you do not want them. If you've worked with TES5Edit before you know that it gives a warning whenever you make a change. It is OK to make the change and you can tell it so.

Next, go back to the left hand pane and do the same thing in the ArmorAddon section. Choose the item and change the Body Slot.

THE BODY SLOT MUST BE CHANGED IN BOTH THE ARMOR AND THE ARMOR ADDON SECTIONS!

Now go to Nifskope. Use NifSkope to open the equivalent Nif file.

In many cases, thanks to BodySlide, there will be two such files (note the red arrow below points to the _0.nif). You will need to do them both but the process is identical. Open either the _0 or the _1 file first, whichever suits you. When the image appears scroll down in the top left hand box until you get to a line that says "BSDismemberSkinInstance."

Click on this and the lower box should change accordingly. At the bottom of the lower box will be a line that says partitions which will open up if you click on the triangle on the left. This, in turn, will show a line that includes the number and description of the current Body Slot. Double click on that line and a dropdown menu, similar to the one found in TES5Edit will appear (which I highlighted in red below).

Scroll up or down and find the new Body Slot, click and save your work. If needed, repeat with your other nif file (as you would in the example above).

ITEMS THAT WILL BE BUILT IN BODYSLIDE WILL NEED TO HAVE THE BODY SLOT NUMBER CHANGED IN BOTH THE _0 AND THE _1 FILE!

BEFORE SAVING YOUR WORK BE CERTAIN THAT ALL THE CHANGES MADE HAVE PLACED THE ITEM IN THE SAME BODY SLOT. FAILURE TO DO SO WOULD BE BAAAAAAAD! (See Ghostbusters I for the appropriate definition of bad).

Surprisingly, that is really all there is to it. Save everything and go back to playing Skyrim.

Changing the number of overlays (such as for SlaveTats)

(I've decided to put this here since it's short:

Go to Skyrim/Data/SKSE/plugins and double click on nioverride to open it in NotePad (or similar). Go to the [Overlays] section and change the number in iNumOverlays in the section that you are interested in changing (body/face/hands/feet). Save the file. You're done.

Very well documented.  The one thing I have not figured out is changing armor to be slot 32. For example if a bikini top or a nice lace camisole is slot 56, changing to slot 32 makes my body invisible.  This is presumably because the .nif is missing base shape or something.  Are there any guides on that?

Not that I am aware of. It may be a Bodyslide issue as well though. If so, fixing it would be highly complex. Evidently, since slot 32 is the default "armor/body" slot when you put something else into it Bodyslide is no longer seeing a body. This, in turn, makes it invisible. Have you tried rebuilding your bikini top/camisole/etc. in Bodyslide after making the change? That might be all it takes.

Appreciate the detailed guide and how easy it was to follow! However, I'm having a weird as hell issue now. In-game, I'm told that certain bikini tops and bras are using both slots 32 and 52. The latter slot conflicts with bottoms and makes them disappear. However, when I go into TESEdit or xEdit, it shows all these armor pieces as only using slot 32. Same thing for the nif files. Any idea what might be going on here? Would appreciate any help as the nezzar lingerie collection is giving me a massive headache with this issue.

If you give me a link I'll take a look but I can't promise anything.

I'm an idiot and never noticed you'd replied to this. If you're still up for checking it out, here's the link. Noticing that people are having similar issues with this and the 2.0 version of the mod. I did go back and try doing the method you outlined, but I end up having the lower underwear straight up never appear. Went back multiple times to make sure I didn't screw up a step, but still got nothing when trying to slot them into slot 49 or 53.

I didn't look at the files myself but I did look at the Support thread. This is what the solution given there is.

Unfortunately I'm the guy in the thread that is running some other SOS mods that would conflict with running Light. Appreciate ya checking it out though!

I have a mod (coco bikinis) that put bikini bottoms into slot 55 (face jewelry). I'm trying to move them (Bikini06a_low_0.nif for example) to 52 (underwear), but the NiTriShape in NifScope doesn't have the BSDismemberSkinInstance entry, or anything else that I can find with a slot number.

Any suggestions?

I did follow the guide but I ended with nothing appearing on the body. I went back and made the whole process again paying double attention, ended with the same result. The particular piece I wanted to change the slot was 32, and I wanted to place it on 53.

Did you remember to build your piece in Bodyslide? The most common cause of something not appearing in game is failure to build it in Bodyslide.

Personally I wanted to change to two bracelets and one armband
the slot 33 hand by 34 forearm by following your method
Obviously it does not work, the meshe has in reference the hand !!

So I used Outfit  Studio (really practical he does everything) import *0.nif in Skyrim ( after using bodyslide not shape)

to take hand off
put the partition 34 on the bracelets instead of 33 , and "Apply" idem with armband export nif  , repeat with *1.nif it's works.
note: you must also change with TES5Edit Armor and Armor addons
as written above.

I followed the tutorial to the T, built the item in bodyslide. The item equips fine, but does not display on the body. Any idea what to do?

This is likely due to either: 1) the item you've changed the slot for is incorrectly made (I assume that is not true since I would always change the body lot of something I liked and wanted to wear with something else I liked and wanted to wear) or 2) you have a mod that has that particularly body slot filled (often with something invisible) or reserved. In short, your problem is likely with a mod. You might want to see if another slot works better for you.

We have to see what the object in question is. Not all keywords fit every item.
To make it invisible, even a trivial compilation error is enough

Would you need screenshots of the nifscope screen or the TESEdit screen, or both?

The Outfistudio screen with partitions and Tes5Edit would be more useful

Had the same problem, followed the instruction and I am surprised that I made it work >_>. Changing the slot in SSEdit and Outfit studio. I don't know if it will be permanent but I am happy that it worked.
