Adding Additional Headparts (ears) in Creation Kit

I have been trying to get this to work on my created race.  I am trying to add cat-like ears to the race and the strange thing is, in full view the ears show up, in head view they do not and then they don't show up in game either.  

 

I've made a copy of the ears in the creation kit, duplicating the ones from another race, Magic Matera.  I've added them to the additional head parts, made sure the valid race is pointing to the one including my race, and done everything I can see that should make them part of the race but it's not working.  Can anyone help me get this to work?  I've even made copies of the nifs, the textures and placed them in a separate folder and created a new texture set pointing to the duplicate textures' locations but none of this seems to be working.
