New Unofficial LL Chat Website Name

Hey all!

Your resident Mad Orange again!

So some of you may know, but been running a 'Unnoficial LL Chat' down in my sig for a while now and it's been doing alright and gotten me new friends here on LL and stuff.

Now the reason why it's Unofficial is because none of this is met with official approval or sanctions from Ashal OR anyone on the moderating team.

So the chat itself is made and maintained by fellow enthusiast LL goers.

One of them is this crazy person named AdamantBanana :P

He got the idea that LL needs a somewhat proper chatroom 'cuz some of us really like to have one and use it not only to just talk about the trials and tribulations of life but also as a pretty good means of communication between modders on how to get help for their individual projects and such.

So this fellow went on ahead got himself a snappy new Raspberry Pi and made it into a IRC chat server AND webclient (via KiwiiIRC) and got it all working :D.

Which now brings us to the purpose of this thread,

What should the URL name be for this new place?

URL Names can contain the following characters:

A-Z (Case does not matter, case gets switched to lowercase anyway)

0-9

Hyphen (-)

Underscore ( _ )

Post serious suggestions and I'll add it to the poll :)

Hopefully this thread is allowed and I won't get a sanction from the Mod team or Ashal about this.

Actually I kinda hope they support this effort :D

(Presently, all options will have a .tk suffix because we are poor and cannot pay for a proper .com/.org name)

(.tk is free btw)

Disclaimer: IRC might be unstable the first few days as we stress test the server (Or the pie in this case :P)

AdamantBanana and I are not liable for any blown up PC's, dead pets or the death of pets because of said PC blowups.

(Side effects may include dizzyness, arrows in the knees, increased sexual arousal and dementia)

Note: THE IRC Server is NOT publicly available yet, we're waiting on a domain name to reveal it :D

The link in my sig takes you to the old chatzy room and will be shutdown and redirected when the IRC server goes up!

Poll closed: Name chosen!

Loverslounge sounds like some sort of "meet singles who want to fuck" site.

I voted for loverslonge but deleted my vote after reading this.

So I can't decide. LL Chat I guess :-/

Feel free to post suggestions if you come up with any; they'll be added as an option to the poll if people like them. :)

At the moment I'm not sure what to vote for either, although I do think that a variation of "lounge" has potential if applied right.

I had considered doing something similar to this, but on a much more dedicated server and software platform, I may include a chat function in my new Forums and CMS. If it were me doing it, I would simply call it DEVChat or something similar and just let folks know it is available, I would not make any special association or connection to "LL" even from an "Unofficial" standpoint. I am sure Ashal and the Moderator team have probably discussed having this feature, but like most who run their own networks or pay for it to be run, look at the massive overhead that is generated from them. People begin to expect it to always be "manned" with an "answer" person, like some kind of free help center, I get this on the phone all the time, "Oh I just got a question...zzz two hours later I am still stuck dealing with the "customer".

Oh we get this on the unofficial chatzy chatroom too sometimes.

Usually the questions are simple enough to answer and resolve within a couple minutes though so we don't really mind.

As for the loverslab association, since it's a free domain name it doesn't really matter; we're not so much committing to anything since we can always change the domain name should there someday no longer be any need for a LL chatroom, perish the thought.

That said we do intend to keep this IRC server running 24/7 for the foreseeable future, it's just that in the next couple of days it might be slightly unstable (perhaps some reboots etc, but probably no long downtimes) while we tweak the settings to their optimal values.

We've yet to do a stress test for the server with a lot of users, but it's been running stable so far.

The server is running InspIRCd which can easily handle multiple thousands of connected users with under 100MB RAM usage, so for now I'd say that the Raspberry Pi (Model B) is dedicated enough for a loverslab IRC.

So you just want another way to stalk ppl don't you? :P

I swear, I'm not stalking you...

I also swear that their isn't an IRC command to let me know your IP address...

I also promise that their is no backdoor that lets me upload a packet sniffer onto your browser by simply logging into the IRC, I mean what would I do with something as silly like that other than monitor in realtime what websites you visit, collect the data and make logical assumptions based off of that. It's not like such a power could be used for any misdeeds either.

I just want to be all your guys' virtual happy (slightly crazy) orange buddy. ^_^

There actually is, normally you can /WHOIS <nickname> to see information (including the IP) of people in a channel.

However, I have disabled the IP part in the WHOIS command, so now you'll just see gibberish instead of the IP when you /WHOIS someone.

So relax peeps, your porn collection is safe :)
