It is my favorite song of all time, but it's also timeless, the subject matter and the playing, it'll be around forever, as the saying goes "War, war never changes.". Also, for fans of extended improvisation, this is the Holy Grail.

1916 by Motorhead.

 

I remember listening to it as a kid and thinking it was incredibly sad and moving, and while I liked it, I didn't understand what a song like that was doing on a Motorhead album. Then I listened to it again a few years ago when I found my old cassette and... it just floored me. Now that I have a better understanding of the first World War, and of what war actually means and entails, as well as a better sense of mortality and duty... (not to mention living to see history pass away with the death of the last WWI veteran) the song just cut me to the fucking quick. One of the best war songs ever recorded.
