FlagrantlyFurry Posted September 8, 2021 Posted September 8, 2021 Hey, just wanted to try my hand at some basic texture edits, but was not sure were to start exactly. Are there are written guides on how to go through creating textures and such?
ReverendFelix Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 Well for starters, you'll need a good texture program. I recommend GIMP 2.0. It's a tough learning curve, but it is pro grade and it is free!
blank_v Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 First You need program for editing Textures, You need anything that can open DDS Textures :: Programs You can use: :: - Step 1 : Graphics Editor - Gimp ( It don't support DDS Files but You can download DDS Gimp Plugin and install it - but i dont think it works with BC3+ ) Photoshop ( i don't know if it support DDS but many koreans use it ) Paint.net ( its supporting all DDS Compressions so You can use it to save / load but its rly trash editor ) ( If You planning to change textures for Characters, Animals etc. its best if You load Mesh and texture into Blender / Zbrush etc. - 3D Editors ) - Step 2 : Nif Editor - NifSkope is tbh only option i know, You need NifSkope to generate UV Maps ( or more like see them ) all meshes have UV Maps and UV Maps control what part of texture is on what part of Mesh - Step 3 : OPTIONAL - Creation Kit - If You want to create NEW textures like new landscape or new items and keep old items default You will have to copy / duplicate Forms in CK - Step 4 : OPTIONAL - BSA Unpacker Im using BSA OPT but its very fking old, You can use BSA Browser or something else... just Google BSA Unpacker or something like that and download... like i said im using BSA OPT, there is also BSA Browser and other programs to do that... You need BSA Unpacker so You can get Textures and Meshes from Skyrim ( they are packed into BSA Files ) You need to unpack those Files if You want to have Skyrim Meshes and Textures You can edit tbh. for Textures You need only Mesh.bas and Textures.bsa Other You can simply ignore :x... :: Option 1 :: - Make completly new Texture 1) Create new File 2) Draw 3) Export as DDS ( with Compression BC3 ( for LE ) or BC7 ( for SE ) - there are differences for them but ignore it :3... BC3/7 will be fine in most cases ) 4) Select Generate minimaps ( and make sure all Layers are connected ( You have only ONE Layer in Graphics Program ) :: Option 2 :: - Edit / change current textures / create new textures for meshes 1) Find Mesh / Texture You want to edit 2) Open that Mesh in NifSkope 3) Right click Mesh and Navigate to -> Texture -> Edit UV / Export Template a) If You want to see UV Map You can use Edit UV b) If You want to export UV Map just click Export Template :)... so You can see UV Map in any Program You want You can change File Name but its not important, what is important is size Make it always 4K ( You can always downscale ) but if You export low resolution it can be not precise If You open Spoiler ( Edit UV ) You will see Green Lines in Window Those green lines are what Mesh is actualy using ( so You can skip area that Mesh is not using ) Ofc. if You work in program like Gimp or Photoshop You need to... guess what is what in Zbrush / Substance ( Paid programs !!! ) or Blender ( free Program ) they doing that for You ( but they are much harder to start work with ) Spoiler 4) Now You need to find original texture used by Mesh... its simple... just look at pic: Spoiler 5) When you unpack Texture You can load them to Gimp or other program with UV Map Spoiler On picture in Spoiler You can see texture loaded in GIMP 2.6 from here You can simply start to edit it... once You done edit You save same like in option 1 1) Export as DDS 2) Pick BC3 for Skyrim LE or BC7 for Skyrim SE 3) Generate Minimaps 4) Click Export but before You export remember to delete UV Map and connect all layers ( or just select "Only Current Layer" )

Appreciate the assist there!
