Magic is common enough in TOW that everyone in the world is at least somewhat aware of it, but the absolute vast majority of people do not know how to use it, and may never even have seen anyone else use it either. That being said, it is much more prevalent in some parts of the world than in others, and certain races and groups have a much stronger affinity to it than others. Fantastical creatures are common enough in TOW that few truly doubt their existence. Their prevalence and the frequency of encounters with them vary considerably depending on the type of creature, time in history, and part of the world you are dealing with. There are many different religions in TOW - with most being polytheistic - but whether the gods actually exist or not will remain undisclosed for the time being. One thing that I can say unequivocally is that people and things have a sort of fate in TOW. It is not your typical concept of fate, where something is 100% predetermined, but rather, something more malleable. You see, there are these beings in TOW called Ellaari, which are superficially similar to the Maiar of Tolkien's world in that they are tasked with bringing a set outcome to fruition. They are neither good nor evil. They just see to it that fate happens. In other words, if a homeless woman is predestined to become a queen, the Ellaari will TRY to make it happen, by their own hands if they have to. Likewise, if some innocent, little girl's fate it to be quartered and beheaded, then the Ellaari will TRY to make it happen. The Ellaari themselves come in many different forms, with some taking the shapes of animals and people, others the shapes of trees and fungi, and others still the shape of natural forces, such as the wind or heat. Political intrigues and military conflicts in TOW can get quite complicated, just like in real life. Everything from regular politics (such as lineages, territory or control of resources), to ethnicity and religion may play a part. The degree to which magic and fantastical elements play a role can of course vary in the extreme. In terms of architecture, weapons, clothing and armor designs, TOW likes to dip its toes (unintentional pun there) into both high and low fantasy. It definitely leans heavily in favor of high fantasy, with some civilizations/cultures being pure high fantasy, but most fall somewhere in between a realistic, medieval/ancient look and the stuff you see in LotR or a 90's computer game. As such, think of Minas Tirith (LotR) or the Imperial City (TES) before you think of a more realistic looking city (while still acknowledging that they exist in the world), and for armor, think of things like towering knights in shining golden armor or skimpily clad Amazonian warriors before you think of a traditional, medieval knight. Do keep in mind that TOW is far from just medieval in its themes. there are actually multiple Ancient-Egyptian-inspired civilizations and many other types of highly distinct cultures with their own customs, architecture, attire, languages, political systems and customs.

It rains on an almost daily basis all year around and the air in the country is often described by visitors as thick, heavy, and laden with excessive moisture. The densely forested coastal regions maintain high temperatures all year around, but the semi-mountainous plains of the interior can get quite chilly in winter due to a mix of seasonality and high elevation. The country is home to numerous streams and rivers, but few of those found in the inland regions are actually navigable by ship and elevation-related obstacles (such as waterfalls) mean that the coastal and interior waterway systems are not directly cross-navigable. The downstream river-systems also have the added complication of being somewhat prone to flooding due to flat geography, strong sea winds, and a particular abundance of rain. • Most of the country’s large population centers are either situated in close proximity to each other right on the coast or far apart in the deep interior. The latter is also home to numerous villages and hamlets of varying size which tend to disseminate out from each town and city. The forests of the coastal regions are hardly inhabited at all, mostly due to an overabundance of dangerous wildlife and common superstition, but there are some scattered military outposts and minor settlements along the rivers leading to the interior. • There is a significant wealth disparity between the coastal cities and the settlements of the interior, with the former being much wealthier than the latter. The coastal cities are also more cosmopolitan, trade-oriented, and deeply intertwined with outside politics, while the interior is more ethnically homogeneous, agrarian-based, and concerned with internal politics rather than what is happening in the wider world. • Another thing that also varies significantly depending on where in the country you are is the character and relative presence of slavery and serfdom. Slaves are not particularly common in the towns and cities of the interior, but they, along with serfs, often constitute an outright majority in more rural areas. Nearly all slaves in the countryside of the interior, regardless of sex, are manual slaves who perform heavy labor or work the crop fields, while the few slaves who do reside in the towns and cities are usually brothel slaves or the personal sex slaves of rich merchants and high-born lords. By contrast, slaves in the coastal cities tend to be fairly evenly split along the sexes in terms of the roles that they perform, with most male slaves being forced to work what little usable farmland there is, while most of the female slaves are used as domestic servants or sex slaves. It should be noted that manual slaves in Eiarelm are usually clothed and often indistinguishable from serfs in most regards other than that they are branded and wear neck collars. By contrast, the sex slaves are nearly always forced to be nude indoors and are typically only draped in thin, full-body cloaks while out in the open. Another important thing to note about slaves in Eiarelm is that most of them, regardless of where in the country they are, are owned by a small number of wealthy aristocrats who live in the coastal cities.

Korfalgs are aquatic, predatory creatures primarily found in the swamps of Ustmaar and northeastern Maidenfell. They are blob-like in appearance and have four sets of external, tendril-like arms which they use to breathe and to grapple their victims into submission. They can transpose living organisms directly through the skin of the abdomen into a chamber known as the Herlac where they possess three highly modified arms which change function based on a cyclic pattern. The Herlac is coated in a thick layer of adhesive mucus which contains a powerful nerve suppressant that quickly immobilizes the victim once caught inside. For most of the year, the internal arms are used to discharge digestive enzymes into the primary cavities of a victim’s body, but during the breeding season, the arms are co-opted to discharge sperm and the mucus switches to a highly nutrition-rich composition. The Herlac also contains sensitive hormone receptors which have evolved to distinguish between female and male pheromones in other animals. If male pheromones are detected within the Herlac during the breeding season, the Herlac begins an immediate transition out of the mating phase and will begin to kill the victim with digestive enzymes within only a few days. Korfalgs stop eating while they have a victim caught in the Herlac and the mucus in the breeding season actively transfers nutrients from the Korfalg to the victim in order to keep the latter alive. Creatures which are not able to absorb these nutrients directly through the skin usually die in short succession even if they are caught during the breeding season. Should a female victim manage to survive the processes thus far described, the Korfalg will become sluggish and move to the nearest lake or a deep, undisturbed portion of its own swamp. There it will sink to the bottom with its abdomen facing up and bury most of its body below the sand or mud while keeping its external arms exposed to retrieve oxygen. At this point, the Korfalg will enter a hibernation-like state that lasts until the victim has undergone a full pregnancy within the Herlac. For reference, Korfalg-induced pregnancies usually last about as long as normal pregnancies would for the females in question. When the Korfalg spawn are finally about to be born they push the arm which was used to inseminate the female out of the vaginal cavity and then crawl out of the Herlac to fend for themselves. Over the next day or so, the parent Korfalg’s normal body functions will slowly begin to return and it will eventually wake up and dig itself out of the sand/mud. At this point, its Herlac will already have begun to kill the female with digestive enzymes to give the Korfalg the energy it needs to make a full recovery. Korfalgs are widely despised, known about, and famed for their ravenous appetite in the regions where they are found, but they are largely an unknown entity to the peoples living outside of the West. Out of all peoples, the Orcs of Ustmaar have a particularly long history of encounters with Korfalgs, but even they know relatively little about them. A lot of common knowledge about the creatures was lost during the chaos of the Fifth and Sixth Eras, particularly knowledge about their reproductive habits, but also a handful of rare firsthand accounts which explained how one could escape once caught in a Herlac. Thankfully, instances of people being snatched from boats and partially digested bodies being found inside of dead Korfalgs has made it common knowledge that they will try to eat people if possible, and furthermore, it is widely known that Herlacs posses an inner coating with unusual medicinal properties, but theories regarding what it can be used for vary a great deal.

Gess : a large, inhabited planet situated within the Material Plane. It is the main setting of TOW as a franchise. the Heavenly Plane (strongly preferred for out-of-universe discussions and lore-writing but also used in-universe) / the World of Gods and Spirits : the plane of existence within which most gods and other ethereal beings reside. the Immaterial Plane (strongly preferred for out-of-universe discussions and lore-writing but also used in-universe) / the World Beyond : the plane of existence to which most souls pass after death. the Material Plane (strongly preferred for out-of-universe discussions and lore-writing but also used in-universe) / the Mortal World / the Living World / the World of Men (used mainly by humans) : the plane of existence within which Gess is situated and most mortal beings reside. the Plane of Atonement (strongly preferred for out-of-universe discussions and lore-writing but also used in-universe) / the World In-Between : a transitional plane of existence situated somewhere in-between the Immaterial Plane and Material Plane. It occupies the same space as the latter plane and is thus a parallel incarnation of it. It is the place where the souls of those who have committed grave injustices and/or atrocities during their lives end up if they never atoned for their sins in the eyes of the gods. Some who end up there are permanently stuck in limbo while others are given an opportunity to go back to the Material Plane as Spirits and atone for their sins.-

Litswitch is essentially a fine, dark gray powder that takes on different chemical properties depending on what elements it's mixed with. It's made by grinding a certain type of rock and salt mineral together, and is thus quite easy to produce. Depending on what you mix it with, it can be made highly flammable, explosive, or acidic. It doesn't cause any sort of air pollution and is only mildly toxic. Litswitch Ignition refers to an array of chemical reactions that will happen consistently when the powder interacts with certain other compounds and materials. Carnatheene is the oldest known form of Litswitch solution, and has been known about for thousands of years, even all the way back in the early First Era. It has a coarse, thick, pasty consistency, and is naturally luminescent with a somewhat greenish yellow color. It's most widely used by primitive races, often as a sort of glowing body-paint, but also for painting and in the decorating of sacred sites. That said, more advanced civilizations do often use it to mark trees for lumber or to make points of interest easier to see at night (chiefly, so that you can find your way around in the countryside or wilderness without having to use the stars). Some primitive societies also know that Carnatheene can be given a bright red glow if you combine it with iron. Canathoreene Stones are hard, often sharp crystals that emit an incredibly strong, white light. In fact, they can in many cases be significantly brighter than your average light bulb. They are formed through a fairly labor-intensive process called Litswitch Crystallization, which has only been around for a few hundred years. Litswitch Crystallization refers to the practice of repeatedly heat-treating and compressing Litswitch powder until it turns into a solid form; or in other words, a Canathoreene Stone. Saraata is a heavy, partially Litswitch-based paste used as a condiment by a race called the Catharni (who live primarily in Idia). It's a mix of coarsely grained Litswitch, plants, and another material called Linosheen. Linosheen is a hard, black material with an almost obsidian-esque look to it. It was a commonly used Eleven armor material during most of the Classical and Modern eras owing to its rigidity and durability, but it immediately fell out of favor when it was discovered that it quickly dissolves when in contact with Litswitch. As Litswitch canons and explosives universally use partially Litswitch-based ammunition, it simply became too dangerous to wear it during battles. Griovuain (or Larkin, as it is often called) is an expensive, frothy, slowly bubbling solution. It's made of concentrated Litswitch, a highly acidic and toxic compound called Niratine, heavy amounts of iron, small amounts of Linosheen, and various animal fats. It's pitch-black in color and can cause severe burns to the skin. Breathing in heavily concentrated Griovuain fumes can also cause a wide array of different illnesses, most of which are fatal if left untreated. When combined with a gas called Aeathels (or its concentrated form, Keiolin), it can cause bones and muscle tissue to quickly dissolve. The combined use of Griovuain and Aeathels by wealthy countries on the battlefield has led to terrible scenes of unimaginable suffering and carnage. Small dosses of the combination are also sometimes used as a form of torture in some societies. Niratine (or Larmansprayl, as it is often called) is a compound made of various acids and natural toxins. Since the start of the Eleventh Era, it's also been common to add a small amount of Litswitch to the base. Aeathels (or Keiolin, as it's known in its concentrated form) is a highly expensive, fragrant-smelling gas (or liquid) that is often used by royals and nobles in some societies to scent their homes. It's actually a vapor released when you boil the blood of the Keia oyster that is then bottled and sold.

Folks - Below is chapter 6 for Ruvalthan's story. I've been updating the original post with all of the chapters and some (crummy) illustrations here (https://www.loverslab.com/topic/213850-ruvalthans-story-pending-proper-title/). I'm hoping you enjoy it. Eager for any comments or feedback. As this is a writing club, it's a great place to post your own stuff. Chapter 6 The next week was an aching grind for Ruvalthan. He thought of Gennaethan all of the time. He wanted to see her. This was really the only time he had ever regretted not knowing how to write. If he could not see her, he wanted to at least write her a letter or, better yet, read one from her. He wanted to see her and that gorgeous smile. Smell her… feel her. She was a poor girl Working hard to help her sick brother. She reminded Ruvalthan of his past situation that seemed so long ago. Working hard and sacrificing for family. Such thoughts were interrupted by a bright light as he was knocking in the head. He fell heavily to the mud in the training pit. His helmet still rung as he shook his head, trying to remember what had just happened. “Head in the clouds much, Ruval?” jeered someone from the sidelines. “More like head up a skirt,” said someone else. Several others laughed raucously. “Next,” called Sergeant Averthan, then added, “Baradir. Fix these two.” “What?” called Herthan. Ruvalthan remembered. He was sparring against Herthan. “Again, kid? You’ve got something to say?” Sergeant Averthan challenged. “No, sir,” Herthan lowered his eyes. “Yea, you won, but you shouldn’t’ve won. You opponent was tasting pussy on his tongue from a week ago. You got a shot in. Your real enemy won’t make that mistake,” he scolded. “Boss, I got this one,” Baradir said. “Shut it, Baradir. Ruval, get out of the fucking ring, already. Herk, you don’t mouth off to me again. You got a question, ask the unlucky fucker that I tell to fix you,” Averthan called. “Yes, sir. I understand, sir,” Herthan said. “I don’t think you fucking do. You’re going to learn some better respect. You’re going to be helping the kitchen staff clean the barracks tomorrow. No, the kitchen staff is in charge of you tomorrow, dumbass. Got it? You mouth off to them, then the head cook is going to beat you like a new girl. Got it?” Averthan finished. “Yes, sir,” Herthan grated through his teeth. The two of them made their way out of the ring. Herthan shooting baleful looks at Ruvalthan. “Come here, dummies,” Baradir said, “come around the other side of the barracks and let’s talk about how dumb you are.” The three of them trained until dinner time. As they were about to head in Baradir said, “Herthan. Need you help on something tomorrow.” “Sure,” he said dejectedly. Baradir bonked him on the back of the helmet, “I mean it. Don’t make me come find you, dummy.” The next morning, Ruvalthan woke early, ate a large breakfast and made off. Herthan was stuck mopping the floor in the barracks. He produced a baleful glare to everyone that thanked him in a sarcastic tone, called him ‘cutie,’ or asked where his apron was. With the mopping done, pots needed scrubbing, a turkey needed to be plucked for dinner, knives needed sharpening. There was no end to the tasks. Fucking Ruval, he thought bitterly. “Right. You’re done, then,” said Siradir, head of the kitchen. “Thanks,” he said, putting the last of the knives back. “Thanks to you, cutie,” she said. The other women in the kitchen laughed. It was a friendly laugh, but Herthan hated it. Try laughing with my dick in your mouth, bitch, he thought. He left the barracks and the garrison. Fucking Ruval. Where is that dumbass… He wandered about and then remembered him going on about a place that does pies. He asked around with passersby and a few stall merchants. An hour later, he found a tavern with three pies on the sign. He peered through the window, but did not see Ruvalthan inside. Fuck. I was sure it would be this place. Herthan turned to leave. Maybe I can make it to the slut house for one of those tasties, he thought. He was just walking away when he heard something muffled. Like someone trying not to yell. Backing up he peered around the corner of the tavern, down an alley. There you are, Herthan thought smugly. Ruvalthan had his back against the wall of the tavern. Some girl was bobbing her head on his dick. “Ah!” Ruvalthan moaned. Most societies see a return to higher levels of socioeconomic stratification during this time, and in many places, there also occurs a high level of religious consolidation, as well as ethnic segmentation, leading to escalating religious and ethnic tensions, especially within Human and Nur dominated societies with large minorities of other races. - 4th Century - 3rd Century > An unknown cult begins in eastern Nortrud and slowly starts building underground followings in many countries across the region (no article available yet) - 2nd Century - 1st Century SEVENTH ERA “Age of Guidance” / “Early Classical Era” Literacy revitalization efforts eventually prove successful in a number of countries, and this encourages missionaries, envoys and merchants to travel out into the wider world. As they aid neighboring economies to get back on their feet, it leads to a very sudden and rapid return of literacy, widespread commerce, and social cohesion in most countries. Subsequently, the world experiences a massive economic upswing, and with much of the previous social order gone, an unprecedented level of social mobility. With unusually low levels of racial dogmas and tensions existing around this time, many societies also become less averse to the idea of combining with other states that may have a culture or ethnicity distinct from their own, and this quickly leads to the formation of many multi-ethnic and multicultural political entities. Within only 480 years of the start of the period, the entire world has already returned to a relatively normal state of affairs, but now with a much more diverse religious, cultural and ethnic landscape than the world of the past. It is very early in this era that the Curse of Atonia befalls the Yoerann populations of the far west and some of the beastfolk races subsequently begin to migrate back to the Eastern Continents. - 5th Century > More Atonian beastfolk migrate back to the Eastern Continents (no article available yet) - 4th Century > More Atonian beastfolk migrate back to the Eastern Continents (no article available yet) - 3rd Century > More Atonian beastfolk migrate back to the Eastern Continents (no article available yet) - 2nd Century > Some Atonian beastfolk races migrate en masse back to the Eastern Continents (no article available yet) > Curse of Atonia befalls the Far West (no article available yet) - 1st Century SIXTH ERA “Age of Mysteries” / “Transitional Era” An almost complete lack of record-keeping in most parts of the world leaves little credible information about this period, but orally passed-down stories speak of illiterate societies with wide-spread social deterioration where people often shun authority and disrespect those around them. Plenty of information about the ancient world is permanently lost as the period goes on, but many societies are saved from total oblivion by the existence of libraries and other record-keeping institutions that survive largely unscathed throughout the period. Something very noteworthy that also happens during this time period is that many old religions suddenly fall out of fashion in favor of a much more diverse religious landscape that persists into the world that comes after. - spans around three centuries and generally estimated in-universe to have lasted two to three FIFTH ERA “Age of Upheaval” / “Terminal Antiquity Era” A multitude of factors – including horrific, wide-spread plagues and massive empires contending in perpetual, near-suicidal struggles for power and dominion – lead to a relatively quick and almost universal decline in living standards, literacy rates, and the stability of political institutions. As the period goes on, record-keeping and historiography slowly fade into obscurity in all but a handful of places, but records are extensive enough to leave future generations with some idea of what was happening at the time. Things eventually deteriorate to such an extent that even time-keeping becomes inaccurate in many societies, and this is what marks the end of the period. Populations are incredibly high at the beginning of the era, but take a nosedive as societies around the world forget how to farm enough food to sustain their high populations. By the end, some countries will have lost as much as 95% of their populations. - 3rd Century - 2nd Century - 1st Century FOURTH ERA “Age of Conquest” / “Upper Antiquity Era” The emergence of large empires and new political systems marks the beginning of a new era. Wars of expansion and attempts at consolidation bring more and more countries and peoples into contact with each other. While some stay mostly peaceful, others begin to regularly fight for control of resources and territory, eventually leading to massive refugee waves. It is during this time period that Humans first begin to settle and conquer eastern Andanoore and Idia, and they quickly displace many of the races that lived there before their arrival. Urban populations continue to grow exponentially throughout the period and skyrocket towards the tail-end, reaching levels that will not be surpassed until the late Eighth Era. It is during this period that some Yoerann first begin to migrate west across the sea before eventually ending up in Atonia. - 24th Century - 23rd Century - 22nd Century - 21st Century - 20th Century - 19th Century - 18th Century - 17th Century - 16th Century - 15th Century - 14th Century - 13th Century - 12th Century > The Kingdom of Ayden is founded and quickly expands outwards from its heartland in what is now southern Ambradil (no article available yet) - 11th Century > Small human settlements begin to crop up in southwestern Idia (no article available yet) - 10th Century > Waves of human refugees and settlers from Eiyamith begin to land along the southern coast of what is now Ambradil and Ielsgond, and along the northern coast of what is now Iradil. Before long, these populations become firmly established, founding many towns and villages. They constitute the first permanent human populations in the Far East and their presence marks the beginning of human expansion in the region (no article available yet) - 9th Century - 8th Century - 7th Century - 6th Century - 5th Century - 4th Century - 3rd Century - 2nd Century - 1st Century THIRD ERA “Age of Kings” / “Middle Antiquity Era” The emergence of kingdoms and small empires marks the beginning of a new era. As the period goes on, urban populations steadily increase and most of the remaining uncivilized races finally begin their transitions into primitive societies. - 12th Century - 11th Century - 10th Century - 9th Century - 8th Century - 7th Century - 6th Century - 5th Century - 4th Century - 3rd Century - 2nd Century - 1st Century SECOND ERA “Age of Heroes” / “Lower Antiquity Era” Cities emerge across the world and culture flourishes like never before. Many epics and myths are born during this time and quickly enter common folklore. In countless tales, heroic figures do selfless deeds, perform unimaginable feats of strength and endurance, found majestic kingdoms, and defeat all manner of great beasts. - 5th Century - 4th Century - 3rd Century - 2nd Century - 1st Century FIRST ERA “Age of Peoples” Sentient races continue to arise and evolve across the world and many eventually organize themselves into primitive societies. The period ends with the advent of the first writing systems in a handful of these first societies, but a rich oral tradition means that stories from this era are plentiful. - spans around 80 centuries but estimates vary wildly in-universe FORGOTTEN ERA “Age beyond Memory” As the world began to green, the animals took their first breaths. After flourishing and dominating the world for many thousands of years, the "Old Ones" went into a slow, drawn-out decline. They are all presumed extinct by the last third of the era, leaving only scattered ruins as a testament to their once mighty civilizations. The middle of the era is marked by the sudden, simultaneous appearance of Woodlings, Swamplings, Rhetlings, Catlings, Foxlings and Llissken on the world stage and it is from the first three of these races that many of the predominant sentient races of later eras evolved. They appear just in time to grow accustomed to life in the shadow of the Old Ones and are able to witness their demise firsthand. It is in large part thanks to some scattered oral stories passed down by these races that anything is known about the Forgotten Era at all, and nowadays, the first half of the era is essentially forgotten about entirely. - spans around 150 centuries THE PRIMORDIAL ERA In the oblivion of the dark, distant past, the world and oceans formed from chaos. As the mountains roared to life, black and gray mushrooms sprouted like trees from beneath the ashen soils, and the first, hellish creatures breathed with embers and fire. In time, those we now call the Old Ones came into their own and sought to dominate all life. They fought and bled upon the earth and their reigns were to be long and well-established in the realms they founded. If not for the dragons and myths of Snakefolk, nothing would be known about this fiery and gloomy period that everyone else had forgotten.
