Anatriax's Guide to Morroblivion

Recommended Posts

While this guide is complete, testing is still being done. Things may change in the near future.

Hello all :) I'm back, yet again, with another guide.

This time I will be walking you through installing Morroblivion, along with the essential mods and tweaks that are required to make a functional, immersive, and feature filled game WITH MINIMAL EFFORT.

For this guide it is REQUIRED that you have LEGAL copies of BOTH Oblivion GOTY and Morrowind + All DLC. If you have pirated copies of these games or alter the .exe files in anyway other than how I direct you, I will not assist you in fixing your problems.

System Requirements for running this guide:

CPU: Quad-Core Intel or AMD with minimum 3ghz clock speed.

System RAM: 8gb

Graphics: nVidia GTX 7xx series with 4gb RAM; or similar ATI card

Disk Space: Have around 40gb of free space. We're gonna install A LOT of stuff.

My system (for your reference)

CPU: AMD FX-8120 8-cores @4.1ghz (Stock 3.1ghz)

RAM: 8gb Kingston Hyper-X (Non-OC 1333mhz)

Installed on: Kingston V200+ 120gb SSD

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (slimmed down and optimized for maximum performance)

We are going for MAXIMUM options and overhauls with MINIMAL work.
(Don't be fooled by this previous statement. This guide IS NOT easy to follow. Even some advanced modders may encounter an issue here or there.)

This guide will be broken down into phases, like my Skyrim guide. Each phase is crucial to making this guide look, feel, and perform as intended.

If you are unfamiliar with my guide writing process, all directions and phases are compressed into SPOILERS so that you can more easily navigate the guide while you use it.

MAKE SURE TO CHECK ALL SPOILERS FOR IMPORTANT INFORMATION

READ EVERYTHING VERY CAREFULLY:

Do not assume that since you know common modding practices, that you know how installing mods for this guide will work. GENERALLY yes, things will work. However, manythings may not work AS INTENDED if you deviate from my instructions.

You NEVER know what useful information might be hidden in them :)

Phase 1: A clean install of Oblivion

This guide is going to assume that you have Oblivion GOTY Steam release.
If you DO NOT have the Steam version, 99% of this guide will still apply to you.

So first, we're going totally UNINSTALL Oblivion.

1) in Steam, navigate to the Games Library
2) Right click on Oblivion, and select "Properties" in the drop down.
3) Navigate to the "Local Data" tab
4) Click "Delete Local Game Content"
5) After that is done, check your steamapps folder that contained Oblivion for any remnants and delete those.
(It's best to just delete the whole folder just in case)
6) Run a program like CCleaner or CleanUp!4.5.2 to delete registry entries and temporary files.
7) Reboot your system

Now to reinstall Oblivion. To do this, just install through Steam to a location OTHER THAN "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)"

If you're like me and have the anthology, you can install via disk following these directions:

1) Install normally through disk WITH STEAM CLOSED
2) Make sure to set the location to "%/steamapps/common/oblivion"
3) After the first disk runs, run the second disk. It will detect the location automatically.
4) NOW open Steam.
5) Go to the Games Library, and install Oblivion to the same Steam library you just did.
6) A window will pop up that says something along the lines of "Discovering local data"
7) When it's done, you'll have to patch about 100mb, and the game will be ready to mod.

Now, since this is a guide for Morroblivion, we're going to need a TOTALLY fresh install of Morrowind, too.
If you don't already have it, buy it from Steam here:

Some tools to help with performance while playing:

Unpark CPU:
Some will debate that unparking your CPU cores may or may not be a bad thing. In my experience it has greatly improved performance. You can always go back to default with this app if it doesn't help.

SmartClose:
If you use IOBit or Razer GameBooster (same software), get rid of it. It's junk. It uses up more system resources than it needs to use. Get this handy little gem, instead. It does the same thing, is MUCH more lightweight (it never stays running. You run it once before gaming and forget about it), and you can put exclusions (such as Mod Organizer and Steam) so that crucial programs don't get closed.

Timer Resolution
There used to be a trick where one would open Windows Media Player to set a CPU's timer resolution to a lower value to optimize gaming performance. With this app, this trick is no longer needed, and uses MUCH lower system resources than having WMP open.

Phase 2: Extenders and Tools

Mod Organizer:
Install this directly into the Oblivion directory located in %/Steam/steamapps/common/Oblivion

OBSE (Oblivion Script Extender):

1) Extract the 7zArcive.
2) Open the arcive and navigate to the root folder (It should be the first one, but if not it is the one that has the "Data" folder inside)
3) Right click and make "Data" either a .zip or .7z Archive. Name this Archive "OBSE" or "Oblivion Script Extender"
4) Keep this window open. Hold the windows key (located between CTRL and ALT) press "E". Navigate to your root Skyrim directory ( %\Games\steamapps\common\Oblivion).
5) Copy the contents into the root folder of Oblivion
6) Close all open windows, and open Mod Organizer.
Mod Organizer should automatically detect OBSE Loader. If not:
1) Click the gears on the top bar of Mod Organizer.
2) In "Title" label it as "OBSE"
3) Click "..." next to binary and navigate to where we installed OBSE, and select obse_loader.exe
4) Add and Close

BOSS:
Yes. I said BOSS. NOT LOOT. BOSS.
Install to the root of the drive where your Steam directory is located. This is for ease of navigation.

1) Click the gears on the top bar of Mod Organizer.
2) In "Title" label it as "BOSS"
3) Click "..." next to binary and navigate to where we installed BOSS, and BOSS_GUI.exe
4) Add and Close

Wyre Bash:
Install directly into Oblivion's folder located at %/Steam/steamapps/common/Oblivion
We are going to be using this to install MANY of our mods VIA MO. (I'll explain in detail)

Used on a VERY limited basis. Only use for mods that have .omod format.

1) Download the installer version.
2) It will install to the default Oblivion folder. Don't change this.
3) On the "Select Additonal Tasks" window, uncheck "Associate the BSA file type". Then continue.
4) Skip the launch on the final page.
5) Restart MO, for automatic recognition of OBMM install.

4) Right click TES4LODGen, click ignore missing data.

Run ONE time with Oblivion.exe as the target.

xEdit Merge Plugins Script
There are a few plugins which we will merge to reduce load order.

1) Click the disk in the top left corner of MO (Install)
2) Select Merge Plugins.
3) Install as a normal mod, ignoring missing data when prompted.
4) Right click Merge Plugins, click ignore missing data.

Setting up Mod Organizer:

1) On the top left hand side of MO, click the wrench (workarounds)
2) Navigate to the Nexus tab
3) Enter your user name and password, then click "automatically log in to Nexus"
4) Click the Workarounds tab - Make sure the App ID is "22330"
5) Change "Load Mechanism" to "Script Extender"
6) UNCHECK "Force-enable Game Files"
7) Close
8) Click the ID Card along the top (Profiles)
9) Enable "Automatic Archive Invalidation"
10) Close
11) In the right pane of MO navigate to the "Archives" tab
12) Check the box to have MO handle Archives
13) Enable ALL Archives
14) Find "Oblivion - Invalidation.bsa" and drag it to the very top of the top list.

5) A window will pop up, copy the contents to %/common/Oblivion/Data/OBSE/Plugins
6) Close the window that has the mod contents. Leave the other two open.

Blockhead:

3) Wait for it.
4)If there are red mods, highlight them, right click, go to file, and select "redate"

7) Right click in the window and uncheck the boxes next to "C.Climate" and "C.Light"

Summon Dremora Lord Saved:
Makes this particular spell available later in the game.
Similar to above, except we need to ADD a Bash Tag.
Add: "Actors.Spells" in the same manner we removed them above.

Elz - No Floating Weapon:
Fixes an issue where NPC weapons float after death.

Lynges Unlimited Death Reload Time:
Because if we die? We're going to close the game and reload Oblivion. The game will crash if you try to reload a save after death. (No known fix)

These next steps are VERY IMPORTANT. DO NOT SKIP.

INI Tweaks:

1) Navigate to your Mod Organizer folder (%/Steam/Steamapps/Common/Oblivion/Mod Organizer)
2) Open the profiles folder, then the "Default" folder (Or whatever profile you intend on using for this guide)
3) Right click "Oblivion.ini" and make sure it is NOT set to "Read Only"
4) Open "Oblivion.ini"
5) Under the [General] Header find "sMainMenuMovieIntro=" and set it to BLANK (Yes, no value.)
6) Do the same for "sIntroSequence=" (Again, BLANK. No value.)
7) Under the [Display] Header find "iShadowMapResolution" and set the value to 1024
8) Under the [Controls] Header find "bUse Joystick" and set the value to 0

11) Under the [Grass] Header find "iMaxGrassTypesPerTexure" and change the value to 7 (Yes, it's "texure" not "texture")
12) Under the [Achive] Header find "sInvalidationFile=" and set it to BLANK
13) Under the [backgroundLoad] Header find the following: bBackgroundLoadLipFiles, bLoadBackgroundFaceGen, bBackgroundCellLoads, bLoadHelmetsInBackground. Set the values to 1
14) Save and close
15) Right click Oblivion.ini, go to properties, and set as READ ONLY. Yes. It WILL cause problems if this is not read only.
16) COPY this file (Right click, Copy)
17) Navigate to %/documents/My Games/Oblivion and PASTE this file, replacing the one that is here.

If any of the above values are not present, ADD THEM.

Now, run BOSS, just for safety sake. Once that's done, run Oblivion THROUGH STEAM. (Yes. You read that right. Through Steam, no MO. We now have MO "hooked" to run with OBSE loader, which loads when you launch via Steam.)
You will get the main title menue that pops up. This is OK. I haven't found a way to prevent this, yet.
Click Play, and make sure you get to the loading screen fine.

Phase 4: Installing Morroblivion

Download Morroblivion here:

1) Download the installer, and the resources.
2) Once downloaded, run the installer
3) Select the Morrowind directory (For me: %/steam/steamapps/common/Morrowind)
4) Select the Oblivion directory (For me: %/steam/steamapps/common/Oblivion)
5) You can dance if you want to. You can leave your friends behind. Cause your friends don't dance, and if they can't dance, then they're no friends of mine.
6) Once install is completed, open an explorer window, and navigate to your Oblivion mods.
7) Open Mod Organizer
8) Open "My Doccuments/My Games/Oblivion" and UNSET Oblivion.ini as read only (leave the properties window open for now)
8) In the drop down on the upper right hand, select Wrye Bash and click Run

17) Once complete, there should be a green plus sign in the diamond.
18) Close Wrye Bash
19) Right click the overwrite mod in MO, and select "Create Mod" name this mod "Morroblivion"
20) Right click "Morroblivion" and select Information
21) Navigate to the INI-Files tab and select "Ini/Morroblivion.ini"
22) Scroll to the bottom of the .ini and change "set mwMainMenu.altStart to 1"
23) Save and close
24) In the RIGHT pane of MO, navigate to the Archives Tab
25) UNCHECK the boxes next to the Morroblivion BSA files
26) Run BOSS and Sort.
27 Re-enable "read only" for Oblivion.ini (We left the properties window open earlier. Should just have to check the box and click OK)
28) Run Oblivion VIA STEAM (remember, we hooked MO to run through OBSE instead of having to launch through MO)
29) When you get to the main menu, start a new game
30) Vefify that you are NOT starting in the jail cell, that you are starting on the ship at the beginning of Morrowind
31) If you are NOT on the ship, go back through all of the steps thus far in the guide, and ensure that you have done everything exactly as directed.
32) Exit out of Oblivion, and prepare for the following phase <3

Phase 5: User Interface

DarkUId DarN:
I prefer this UI overhaul mostly because I really hate the light colored default menus for Oblivion.
This mod requires special attention for install:

1) Uncheck the "Optional Menus" box
2) Click OK to install
3) Open an Explorer Window (Windows Key + E) and navigate to %/Documents/My Games/Oblivion
4) Right click on "Oblivion.ini" and uncheck "read only" then click "apply"
5) Under the [Fonts] Header make the following changes:

SFontFile_1=Data\Fonts\Kingthings_Regular.fnt
SFontFile_2=Data\Fonts\DarN_Kingthings_Petrock_14.fnt
SFontFile_3=Data\Fonts\DarN_Kingthings_Petrock_16.fnt
SFontFile_4=Data\Fonts\DarN_Oblivion_28.fnt
SFontFile_5=Data\Fonts\Handwritten.fnt

6) Save and close
7) Check "Read only" under Oblivion.ini properties, and Apply, then OK

Skill Perk Descriptions:
Adjusts tooltip size to work with our new UI settings

nONatees Colored Shivering Isles map:
This mod is not packaged properly for install:
Expand "Visually Divided", right click "Data" and set as data directory.

Dynamic Map:
Let the BAIN installer run.
Check "00 Core" and "01 Color Map", then click OK.

MiniMap - Reboot:
Because I love having a minimap
This mod is not packaged properly for install, right click "Data" and set as data directory.
Special Instructions:

1) In the right pane of MO navigate to the Archives tab
2) Locate "MiniMap.bsa", right click, and select Extract
3) Navigate the popup window to "%/Steam/steamapps/common/Oblivion/Mod Organizer/Mods/MiniMap v1x2x0"
4) Once in the folder that has the SINGLE content folder of "Menus" click Select Folder (DO NOT HIGHLIGHT MENUS FOLDER)
5) Right click MiniMap mod in the left pane of MO, select Information
6) Navigate to the "Filetree" tab
7) Highlight "MiniMap.bsa", right click, and select hide
8) Close

HUD Status Bars
Run the BAIN installer.
Select "00 Core", "01 Orb Style" (My preference, if you prefer vanilla or Skyrim style select one of those, but only ONE mod from 01)
Leave all other selections blank. Those selections will likely cause your game to crash.

DarNified Config Addon:
Allows DarkUI-DarN configuration options to stay permanent.

Now that we have the UI addons completed, lets run BOSS to sort our load order, and load up Oblivion, to make sure that the UI is functioning as intended.

REMEMBER: Always launch Oblivion through Steam after following this guide.

Phase 6: ENB, Weather, and Lighting

A few words about ENB before we begin:
ENB for Oblivion is not the same as it is for Skyrim, or Fallout. It is VERY performance heavy.
There is no memory tweak.
If your system doesn't match what I've labeled in the preface as requirements, SKIP ENB and continue with weather and lighting.

Turning off Steam Overlay (REQUIRED):

1) In the top left corner of Steam, click the "Steam" button
2) Select "Settings" in the drop down
3) In the window that pops up, go to "In-Game"
4) Disable "Steam Overlay"
5) (Optional) turn on FPS counter (will show with overlay off)

ENB Binary:

1) Download by clicking the down arrow at the bottom of the page.
2) Once done, extract contents of the folder to %/steam/steamapps/common/Oblivion (The same folder as Oblivion.exe)

This is the ENB Preset I suggest. It uses both ENB and SweetFX to achieve it's goal. It is a blend of fantasy and realism.

1) Download, and extract the archive
2) Copy the contents into %/steam/steamapps/common/Oblivion (The same folder as Oblivion.exe) Overwrite when asked.
3) Open enbseries.ini
4) Find "MaxAnisotropy=16" and change this value to 4
5) Find "EnableDepthOfField=". Set this value to false
6) Find "EnableAmbientOcclusion=". Set this value to false
7) Save, and close.

Animated Window Lighting:
Pretty self explanatory. Helps add some immersion.
Follow the steps below to install:

1) In the drop down in the top right corner of MO, select Wrye Bash and click RUN
2) In the window that popsup, click OK
3) Click the "Installers" tab
4) Once download of AWL is done, drag and drop the archive into Wrye Bash
5) When asked, Copy
6) Next to the mod you'll see a box with a pen (or eyedropper? Idk)
7) RIGHT CLICK this mod, and select "Unpack to Project"
8) Now you'll see a mod with the same name, only a diamond next to it. Delete the one with the square.
9) Right click Animated Window lighting (With the diamond) and select "WIZARD"
10) We're going to have several options, MOST we will be using default. I'll say when we're NOT.
11) When asked if you use RAEWD, select NO and click NEXT
12) When asked if you use Bomret's Texture Pack for Shivering Isles, select YES. We will install this later.
13) At the end you'll see check boxes with the options we've selected.
14) Check the box for "Apply these selections" then click FINISH
15) Close Wrye Bash
16) Right click the overwrite mod, and create mod. Name this mod "Animated Window Lighting"
17) Check the box to activate.

NOTE: this does not cover Morrowind with animated window lighting. I haven't found a patch to do so.

Weather - All Natural:
Because we all hate vanilla weather patterns for Bethesda games.
Follow the steps below to install:

1) Follow steps 1-10 for Animated Window Lighting (found above)
2) When asked if you want to use the bashed filter patch for other mod support, select NO
3) When asked to chose color tinting, chose "Darker Bad Weather"
4) When asked to select a darker nights option: Select 50% Darker Nights and No Blue Tint
5) Continue with steps 14-17 for Animated Window Lighting.

Immersive Interiors:
Helps make interiors more immersive, as far as lighting goes.
Install as normal through MO.

Immersive Interiors - Bravil and Leyawiin:
Same as above, but for these two specific cities.
This mod is not packaged properly for install, right click "Data" and set as data directory.

This should be all you need. I'm looking for additions for Morroblivion for Immersive Interiors and Animated Window Lighting. If you stumble across those (or know of them already) point me in their direction, so I can include them in my guide. Thanks :D

Phase 7: Body Replacers (male and female)

8) Right click "Robert Male v52" that's left. Select WIZARD

10) Second page, select "Flapping in the wind"
11) On the next page, select the body that suits you. I prever "Breeze Defined Body"
12) On the next page, select the feet you prefer. I use Default
13) Pick the head mesh that suits you, I use RT6
14) Use the default (2048) skin texture.

16) For Imperial, I use ROBM 2. Select otherwise if you prefer.
17) For Imperial Textures, I use Pack2
18) For Orcs, I use hairy, Dark Seducer Default, and Golden Saint Default.
19) For Default Normal Maps, select yes.
20) Pick the normal maps that suit you, through the next several pages.
21) Select YES to "Less Ape-like idle animations"

10) Once Sub Packages are selected, right click DMRA BBB Complete, and select Install.

This guide may or may not receive updates in the future, dependant on user input.

I haven't decided what Lovers mods to add yet, if any. If I DO figure that out, those will be added.

Thanks so much for reading my guide. I hope it's gotten you on the way to a wonderful experience with Morroblivion.

Thank you. I believe I am caught up to this point. The game still launches fine. Since I can't run most hi-res textures I am going to go ahead and optimize them now, though.

Make sure to use DDSopt and set the textures to 1024x1024

If you do that with the HD textures, MOST people should be able to run them, even with only a 1gb card.

UPDATE: Back on Schedule.

Mod Organizer is now working as intended for Oblivion following the instructions provided in Phase 2.

Phase 5 added.

Tomorrow I'll be adding Weather and Lighting, along with Body Replacers for males and females.

Link to comment

The list looks very good and your instructions are very clear.

too bad that installing a playable oblivion is so complicated.

i was wondering what colourwheels oblivion overhaul is needed for.

i used it some time ago and it pretty much ruined the game experience for me, as it

- replaces almost all random characters with females (guards, bandits, marauders) (->a male player character might encounter more potential rape victims this way, but a female character won't be that much in danger anymore)

- creates duplicate comic vanilla races (->this makes all efforts to use your own custom races futile)

- and creates a rather funny overall atmosphere of the game.

so if it not necessary or there's a different mod for the purpose, i'd rather not use that overhaul.

I use it mostly for the lingerie shop and the armor replacers that are included. I'll be editing that portion of the guide to let people know how to change things so that the functionality is limited to that :)

EDIT: after messing around with the .esp in CS, it's not possible to remove the portions mentioned above.

--Colourwheel's is optional for this guide--

Link to comment

There are also changes that make most NPC's female. I'm sure it could be edited so that they're not female; however, I don't have the time to sit and basically create an entirely new .esp file to add just the lingerie shop and armor/clothes replacements.

I really wish I did. :/

Link to comment

I understand that very well.

I wish i knew how to work with the CS without creating tons of dirty edits.

I know how the olivion folders work and have done some retexturing and mixed some nifs etc, so i'd just create copies of the male armor folders and rename them to "f" and then go into CS and change the entries for the formIDs.

Sounds easy in theory, but to me that's a walk through hell and my esp would most likely crash the game.

Link to comment

In theory: The Colourwheel's vanilla armor/clothes replacers should function with the .esp removed, as they overwrite vanilla textures/meshes.

However, the DMRA BBB Complete Clothing and Armor Replacer is actually quite nice. A touch skimpier than I prefer, but still nice.

another great works... thanks for making this guide!!

The only few things that i can suggests is:

- adding maskar's overhaul... it's fully compatible with fcom and added a tons of very interesting things

- if you want, you can add some quest (clearly... for Oblivion world!) there are some that was be proven to be perfectly compatible from each other.. (for example: tears of the fiend, ruined tale tales, bartholm ecc ecc..), this because i like to play morrowind, immediatly followed by oblivion with the same player, and so i can taste the better of the two game in one adventures..

- for the loverslab mod, i'd like to suggest: lovers with pk, lovers adult yeld, lovers magic, lover rape, lovers voice ssp plus, adult play plus ssp

thanks another time... and another time excuse me for my bad english!

"tomorrow" is two weeks ago now and i still haven't tried morrowblivion, as i've gotten distracted by other means of either seeking mods, discussing mods for all kinds of games, or "family stuff" or even trying out completely new games like "Dwarf Fortress".

i hope i can try this sometime soon and give you proper feedback.

[...]

For this guide it is REQUIRED that you have LEGAL copies of BOTH Oblivion GOTY and Morrowind + All DLC. If you have pirated copies of these games or alter the .exe files in anyway other than how I direct you, I will not assist you in fixing your problems.

[...]

this means having the german copy of both TESIII GOTY and TESIV GOTY will most likely not work.

i'll have to wait until the - actually pretty much overpriced for such an old game - copy of Oblivion GOTY imported from the UK arrives and then wait until i have enough sparemoney for MW GOTY imported from the UK, which is even more overpriced.

DISCLAIMER! I only comment your guide, because i'm unsure if my install will be stable. my goal is a stable oblivion install with lovers. So please don't see this as nagging, but as honest questions from someone who is not a modder (i guess i have to add "yet" ).

i began installing, but i do not own Oblivion on steam and there's no way of activating it there, as it doesn't have (and doesn't require) a serial.

what version of patches are required to get to the version you get when letting steam patch your game?

GOTY and unofficial patch should work.

ModOrganizer is not a valid win32 executable. this ruins half of your tutorial. i just ignored it and keep going without it although it sounds like a good tool.

5) Highlight "DLCFrostcrag - Unnoficial Patch.esp"

i don't have that DLC. none of those DLCpatches (except SI and KotN) make sense on my install - or do they?

So far your guide has been my favorite! However, I am unable to make Mod Organizer work for my setup. I am familiar with the program and used it with Skyrim without a problem. Nevertheless, regardless of what I do, MO fails to recognize an essential Morroblivion BSA. I haven't figured out which one yet. When I install through Wrye Bash without MO, everything loads as it should. When I install with MO, it consistently warns me I have a missing core BSA. I would love to use MO with Morroblibion because it leaves my original files in tact.

Try back dating your BSA files.  Go into settings workarounds . Then click on back date BSAs. If that doesn't work make sure you installed it correctly.   There are only two reason MO wouldn't work.  The BSA files aren't back dated causing them to overwrite the newer BSA files or  MA can't see the BSA because it is in the wrong location because of a bad install.

So.. I know this is an old thread, but it does seem to be the most complete so far. Unfortunately however i run in to the issue whereby ModOrganiser 1.3.11 NO LONGER executes 64bit binaries, meaning anything to use wrye bash is doomed as Wrye bash no longer support 32 bit operating systems. this means I can do the following steps:

Quote
Unofficial Oblivion DLC Patches:
We need to remove some bash tags:
  Hide contents

1) Click on the drop down in the upper right hand corner and select "Wrye Bash"
2) Click "Run"
3) Wait for it.
4)If there are red mods, highlight them, right click, go to file, and select "redate"
5) Highlight "DLCFrostcrag - Unnoficial Patch.esp"
6) In the bottom right corner is a "Bash Tags" window. Expand this window up.
7) Right click in the window and uncheck the boxes next to "C.Climate" and "C.Light"

Is there a more up to date version of this truly impressive guide? Or a better way to install Morrodblivion and lovers PK for modern machines? (or even just morroblivion honestly)

Thanks!

Hey! Sorry I've stepped away from the modding scene for awhile.

As far as an update, I have no clue. Maybe. Maybe not. It will require A LOT of research and work... and with Skywind and Skyblivion coming soon I'd rather wait for and focus on those when they're released.
