{SOLVED} FNIS and CTD Problems

So, I've been modding Skyrim for a year now, most of that year being on a trash PC with trash knowledge, gliding by barely with self edits and simple Googling. Recently, I've upgraded both PC

 Intel® Core i7-4720HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz with 16g of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M with 4g of dedicated RAM, on Windows 10 64-bit

and upgraded brains, looking through extensive modding guides in LL, in the Nexus, and online. I've recently done a full wipe of my old build on here, then reinstalled Skyrim, doing all the needed steps, starting off with MO, and blah, blah, blah. I've ran into constant problems, but I've finally shimmied my way to a good list of mods around 200+, and I'm finally happy with the set of mods I have when I've just recently ran into troubleshooting problems I CANNOT WITHOUT ANY HELP get past. It's aggravating, but I've finally came here to see how the supportive LL community could help. I have multiple problems, but I'll only talk about two which are extremely game breaking.

 

  1. Game crashes whenever going out to the world of Skyrim or anywhere else besides the Alternative Start prison. I dunno why, but it just does. I've tried using PDTWrapper to see the problem, LOOT to reorganize the mod order, and have even reinstalled mods, but for some mother****ing reason it just doesn't work, and for the former first, I just have no idea what I'm doing.
  2. FNIS comes up with this annoying error

    ERROR(9): Index was outside the bounds of the array.

    and some animations such as TK Dodge works okay enough, but the important ones like Sexlab and Non SexLab Animations and minor ones like equipping a weapon while running and Momo's backflip animation doesn't work. I've reinstalled, uninstalled, reinstalled manually and through MO and even NMM, and uninstalled, and it just doesn't work. I can't get past it.  :@  

              

I'm sorry for writing so much, but these problems are killing me. I've been constantly on my PC for a good 28 hours this week trying to fix this goddamn problem, and I'm sick of it, and considering either leaving Skyrim or just hoping to find some guru expert to TeamSpeak with me and do it for me like the lazy moron I am, but hopefully you guys can help this problem of mine.  :D

SOLUTION: Something was wrong with Floppy SoS, I have no idea why it was messing everything up, but probably had to do with adding all those shlong physics into the game! Uninstalling that, as well as installing FNIS as show in the best answer clears everything up.

The FNIS error " ERROR(9): Index was outside the bounds of the array" usually means you've exceeded the number of animations it can handle, which is a bit unusual given you're running the V6.3 XXL version which raises the limit.

 

However, this warning about V6.3 XXL might apply if you do have a very high number of animations. "Increased load CTD likelihood for 8000+ animations is possible"

That doesn't make any sense, at least concerning the too many animation problem.

Looking at your mod list in quick..

Its your script usage. ** edit ** would be my first guess

More scripts than your PC can handle would be the number one culprit. The full blown FNIS is not a help, but that only comes into play for scenes and at the moment use.

Things like:

Climates

Realistic Torches

Reading takes time

Frostfall ( big time script user )

etc etc.

The best solution to avoid the issue is look at your scripts file and see how many you have as a whole.. then sort thru' your mods and what you cant stand to not play without and remove others. Also on things that allow you to change  the scan timer use that and crank it up a notch.. Scanning constantly is going to kill  you if your not on a high end.

Its not really the number of mods that kill you, it always gets down to the resource load.. and scans are the kicker. Also once you have mods working if you can toggle off the papyrus ( more than a few allow that ) turn it off if things are working. You only need it recording when you have problems.

Remember one mod can push the scripts more than 10 in some cases.

Where would the script file be? I'm still unfamiliar with MO so I'm not sure where it would be. I'm guessing the scan timer is in-game, which I will do. I'll edit this if anything changes before I get a response.

 

EDIT 1: Okay, so I found the mods and the script files in each of the mod folders, separated them by size and deleted the mod that had the most hogging files in the game (it was the Civil Ward Overhaul) and uninstalled that. I also ran only into one setting (in the Crowd Gathering one) that had a setting for scan time, and I changed that, but still crashed, this time only getting a black screen before crashing, not even a loading one. I'm gonna try multiple times before uninstalling another one (I really want Frostfall but I'll take that out if need be), will update soon. 

 

EDIT 2: Here are screenshots of the largest .pex files in the scripts folders, starting from 100+ kb to 40-100 kb. Again, really don't wanna delete Frostfall but I'm willing to make sacrifices so long as I know if it's needed, especially since the Frostfall folder has like /no/ scripts in it.

I feel you on Frostfall... I didn't want to pull it either but my desire to not have to turn it on and off for my Devious mods or S.L.U.T.S. In the case of frostfall you don't have to lose it.. IE if you want the heat sources and contents leave it in.. just don't activate it.. then it wont be running scans ( when I say scripts I am being generic.. basically the killer is the actual scanning cells or characters.. like Frostfall has to track warmth / wet / weather etc)  all the time and you can still use cooking etc tied in with campfire.. but I digress.

Cant honestly tell you the best setup for what to pull etc.. but I finally reached my limit recently and dug thru' a lot.

Basically look at things that are nice.. but do they really effect your game? IE Sexy Move ( its a monster! Scans entire cell every 2 seconds ) so I pulled it.. but PCEI2 already has sexy moves anyway.. so scratch that.. no need for two eating resources.

You have like torches.. so that has to scan every single cell every so how often then apply torch affects, lighting etc.. Do you really need it?

Quest can surprise you also.. is it one your using? If not.. pull it.. you can add easier later than take out with no harm. ( Golden rule, especially when dealing with sys issue.. adding usually wont kill you.. you can go to a clean save.. pulling out.. well.. there is no such thing as a clean save. )

Custom followers. Often the game is tracking them the entire time.. even if your no where near them..

Or things like BBLS.. it is always scanning NPC's.. where are they? Are they guest.. these are all things hitting your resources..

So you see where I am going? Don't pull anything that really makes your game for you.. but start off with yanking anything that may even hint at running scans or scripts that you don't really need.. then see how it runs.. then you know add or take out.. and you see which are eating the crap out of your system..

From your list what I would pull right away and see if that improves everything:

Climates. If your running frost you don't need it anyway. Frost is trying to set the climates and looks.

Wet and Cold.. same as above.. its doubling your use of tracking for the same things frost is doing. ( plus two or more programs doing the same thing can cause a conflict CTD or freeze anyway.. )

Dual sheath.. there is a conflict in that anyway.. I forget the details because its been awhile. But I know I pulled it long ago for issues.

EFF some report problems with it and a ton of custom followers and some with L.L. assets.. Like Milk Mod wont work for crap with it in a few cases I read.. ( most notably custom voice or breaking the follower pattern with quest etc.. not everyone.. but when you see reports you have to consider you may fit.. )

Bathing I use.. but I dropped all the addons.. cleared up some right there.

Realistic waters .. things like that in general. those are not simple texture replacers. Its creating a generated change.

Enhanced lights.. that's eating a lot.. better to find one ENB that fits the bill for a lot of the mods you have that are doing the same things but all separate instead of one mod handling it.. One is usually much more efficient and less hogging than multiple.

 

BUT I NOTICED MOST OF ALL... lose open cities. Its a great mod.. but it eats the resources.. It has basically crammed what the game originally generated in separate cells ( thus not eating so much system, to generate ) and now instead of Whiterun exterior / interior your system is having to generate, scan, and all the other things ( to include what you modded in ) for the WHOLE area instead of ignoring what was an interior.. I believe if you check the page it tells you its pretty intense on use...

 ** On cities page is also a link to ENB by Boris V. It includes a speedhack patch that you can try to open up memory etc and for CTD.. Current version is .308 of that ENB.

But anyway.. I cant promise that will fix all your issues... but it sure cant hurt to try and free up tons of resources. That will indeed fix a lot. Most likely your freezes and ctd right off.

Thank you for all the help! Okay, so I've uninstalled some mods, a few being dual sheath, Open cities, and Frostfall, and I started a new, clean save, and have done random things for the alternative start. Only one of them have I been able to actually get to the location (Bane Manner patron or something like that) and if I left the building to Skyrim I'd CTD, one time getting an infinate loading screen. This is my new mod order.

Couple of cheat things to try... which cant hurt either as you can change 'em back.

change the cell buffer  from 36 to 24 or even 20.

another thing straight from the Cities page I thought I recalled and being anal I had to check... on memory lines try this;

So they jammed a bunch of wanky code and memory use in that modders cleaned up along the way.. since Beth can no longer be bothered with making computer games.. well.. work right on computers... I digress again...

 

mostly I really believe your issue is just mods of course.. use and conflicts that are not LOOT or MO / NMM types.. like I see you have killable children.. more than a few L.L. or sexlab based mods don't work with that.. some can crash.. some just flat out tell you no and shut down.. ( Like cursed loot )  But try those mem settings, and of course be flexible in what you keep and pull.. Honestly I am hate to say it most likely aside from mod conflicts (?) the simple stress load.

Looking at stats you should be ok.. but I am leaning to ask if its a lappy? From the ROG Asus series? If it is.. well remember no lappy pushes the full limit listed... Like me.. I am still on a MK14 Alien for Skyrim.. ( simply because its easier to just keep it playing and working on than messing with setting up a new system mod wise etc.. lol.. ) but despite the push it has for its age.. it aint any comparison to desktop with exactly the same stats.. so be flexible.

 

BUT to surmise.. from modding since about day 2 of Skyrim..

Try the memory tricks.

Double check for things that probably conflict.. IE the killable children.. anything that removes the child tags can have issues with other mods once you throw in adult mods.. more than a few modders do not support that in play ( plus L.L. will pull your stuff if it supports pedophilia ) 

anything that is altering the same cells as another mod..

multiple level list / merchant list affecters.

your still pretty scan heavy..and tracking heavy.. like patrols.. your game is actually tracking those once generated.. also like crime radius.. ( Hey I am not knocking the mods.. lol.. just sayin' when looking at freeze or ctd and your not having dirty mods you have to think conflict and system use )

Since you do indeed have xpmse I would suggest you remove all the other weapon armor placement.. like back shield etc.. until you resolve the crash type stuff...

I would double check my LOOT list for ANY notes on dirty or errors... normally you will find a lot of harmless ones.. but if you have multiple cases of, again the ITM or even cells altering in the same way.. it can be a beast and a bitch to deal with. ( An example.. Mango follower when she was first released on NEXUS.. left a gaping hole in the inn floor.. which in itself was not an issue.. unless you had followers falling in it on generation.. which they did.. plus it had 3 deleted references to other followers removed but not cleaned that crashed out Dragonsreach when you tried to go in )

 

I know.. its not like I am giving you a great or easy way to find the problem.. but once you deal with a ton of mods.. it just gets harder to sort it out unless you have only been adding them one at a time over time.. hell.. took me a few years to find my perfect Skyrim.. and one that wouldn't crash.. lol.. Mostly thanks to here. I like the dirty stuff. :-p

I've only twiddled with the memory settings cause I have 16g of RAM, and even though Skyrim only uses 4gb, I still want to use all that 4gb of ram.

 

My system is fairly new, it's a Lenovo something, I'll have to look it up, but it works well with most other games (for example, I play Hitman often and it works like a gem on medium or high settings.)  It is a laptop though, mainly cause I like the idea of having the world and then some in my hands, haha, but it's still quite a powerful one. 

 

Killable Children hasn't been working with me anyway, so I'll take that out ASAP, especially since I highly lothe the idea of having Sexlab think I want to have something related to pedophilia.  :@

 

There are some mods that need cleaning, so I'll do that as well, but for now I want to do everything I can BEFORE knocking mods off, as I really like them, haha. But the back shield mod will get out, will come back with more info and screenshots. 

 

EDIT 1: There was a lot of mods with mostly ITM dirty edit stuff, made sure to clean them properly, as well as the uninstallation of Killable Children and Backshields, will post what happens next.

EDIT 2: Well, it's still CTD whenever I go outside to Skyrim. Tried it many many times, doing many different alternative starts, and the ones which spawn me IN Skyrim instantly CTD, while some which spawn me in buildings don't until I step out. I might revert back to the last stable build of Skryim I had which was a list I made before installing Sexlab stuff and see how that goes, or idk anymore. A note though, the MO LOOT says that my order is wrong, but the standalone version doesn't. Which one should I listen to?

Remember on the memory usage.. Skyrim only uses that. Once you started tweaking, modding, adding etc.. you changed that. The core is the core... but anything we add, adds to.  Which should not be an issue for you, like before.. I don't think its the system, its the mods use of the system and things not playing nice together..

 

Cant tell you for sure, but those sounds files are not looking healthy. Aside from voices I added to Sexlab I dumped using any sound changes also long ago. Especially any music or sound effects. Saw an increase in load times overall with all of them. So now if it ' aint ' a mod sound.. nope. But again.. that's me. :-p

 

The real pain is the count of mods you have. Since I don't know all of them looking at your list.. the answer is probably right there.. but its pretty tough to stay up on any and all conflicts except for a few you really love and follow.

 

On the bright side.. if you don't look at it as a chore.. but a hobby in itself you can enjoy even fixing broken things with your modding.. I probably have just about as much time in fixing my modded game as I do in actually playing it.. lol..

 

Yeah.. let us know how it works.. I am now having an issue of my own. But I believe I know the answer since it just started.. I just don't like the answer... :-/

Well.. I would look at LOOT answers first. I don't use MO myself, I just went to pure NMM out of laziness with downloading to it..  Plus back when it all started I was pure manual install.. so tracking files doesn't bug me if I have to..  But anyway.. both of them are notorious for moving things if you let them to places that don't work. But LOOT is not perfect.. you may have to drag some anyway... example.. Dibella Temple of Whiterun HAS to be below BBLS but LOOT puts it above all the time.. AFT has to come at the bottom of the order of most Custom Followers but LOOT puts it high.. etc etc.. I would never have figured that out on those two examples based on LOOT or NMM unless someone smarter than me had not posted about it....

If your fine inside cells.. but going outside.. it is for sure an issue with a large change mod. By that I mean something that is changing the outside cells everywhere. If it worked at some point fine.. think back to what you added or maybe has updated recently that affects your outside cells.. an update could have screwed an older thing up also.. example of what I mean again.. if you ever used Pirates under the Black flag ( or something like that ) it updated on its second turn and wound up screwing up every cell from solitude to whiterun .. got fixed of course.. but for a while ( and I forget why ) every time I left a building I crashed.. Also one I would never have figured out without digging.

So I did as you suggested and went back to the old start where I got to, which was a save point I (smartly) decided to make before installing SexLab and other things, and even though I didn't run FNIS and the animations were at a T, it ran smoothly and perfectly. I'll post the mod list, but I'll be slowly doing my own tweaking and testing. In the meantime, I still dunno how to fix this FNIS error. :(

EDIT: Honestly, I'm quite tired of this. This troubleshooting might be fun for you, but it is extremely frustrating to me, and though I'm not saying you liking this support (and I am VERY thankful for it) thing is bad, I'm just saying it's getting tiring, so I'll probably be off this post for a day, away from Skyrim, take another shot at it whenever. Again, thank you for all of your help people, though the problem still isn't fixed.

Ooops... lol. I laugh at myself. Got wrapped up in the discussing the ctd / freeze and the whole of the mod thing and honestly.. forgot all about the FNIS error even tho' its at the top.

Seems that your showing NO male animations. Or male gender. having SOS should have produced some right there if I recall.

Also you have a few patches checked.. did you remove those checks after removing any associated mods? Checking those for patch without having that actual mod causes FNIS errors.

 

What it looks like is your FNIS is not seeing all your mods. It should have a list generating that shows all your animation mods that draw on it. Is your FNIS actually sitting in the data folder? Its one that has to have full access to all your animation locations, so not advising you to try and sub folder it.

 

couple of KISS issues that as often, forgot to ask you also.

Are you getting any of these mods via STEAM? If so.. that can be the CTD right there.. a lot of STEAM mods have a lot of issues, and it has no check system on its install etc

Also, if you have UNSUBSCRIBED any from STEAM, you need to manually look for the file. STEAM does not really remove anything, it just deactivates and leaves tons of files hanging out.

LASTLY.. and of course.. At some point.. especially after adding / taking out mods you really need to run a cache check. Even with separating mods you will eventually build up a junk collection. Again if you have been using steam mods especially at risk.. since its handling is really crappy. Using an MO should keep you from any mod issues with validation screwing them up. Unless they are actually writing into main data packs..

The FNIS error " ERROR(9): Index was outside the bounds of the array" usually means you've exceeded the number of animations it can handle, which is a bit unusual given you're running the V6.3 XXL version which raises the limit.

 

However, this warning about V6.3 XXL might apply if you do have a very high number of animations. "Increased load CTD likelihood for 8000+ animations is possible"

 

That doesn't make any sense, at least concerning the too many animation problem.

I'm experiencing the same problem but nothing with FNIS though.

If your fine inside cells.. but going outside.. it is for sure an issue with a large change mod. By that I mean something that is changing the outside cells everywhere. If it worked at some point fine.. think back to what you added or maybe has updated recently that affects your outside cells.. an update could have screwed an older thing up also.. example of what I mean again.. if you ever used Pirates under the Black flag ( or something like that ) it updated on its second turn and wound up screwing up every cell from solitude to whiterun .. got fixed of course.. but for a while ( and I forget why ) every time I left a building I crashed.. Also one I would never have figured out without digging.

 

So I did as you suggested and went back to the old start where I got to, which was a save point I (smartly) decided to make before installing SexLab and other things, and even though I didn't run FNIS and the animations were at a T, it ran smoothly and perfectly. I'll post the mod list, but I'll be slowly doing my own tweaking and testing. In the meantime, I still dunno how to fix this FNIS error. :(

you issue looks like an fnis problem, you need to be concentrating on removing those errors first

first thing i'd suggest is try disabling the gender specific animations

Well FNIS is installed via MO which puts it in it's mod folder, which some people recommend while others say only manual works. I was super confused about it, so I tried all three methods, even through NMM, and it didn't work. But I'll try it again, will put down an edit if it works or not. 

 

Also, it's showing female animations too, like I have most animations running well enough, but it's just Sexlab and it's plethora of animations is not working whatsoever. But yea. I also never install mods via steam, so don't worry about that.

EDIT: Honestly, I'm quite tired of this. This troubleshooting might be fun for you, but it is extremely frustrating to me, and though I'm not saying you liking this support (and I am VERY thankful for it) thing is bad, I'm just saying it's getting tiring, so I'll probably be off this post for a day, away from Skyrim, take another shot at it whenever. Again, thank you for all of your help people, though the problem still isn't fixed. 

 

you issue looks like an fnis problem, you need to be concentrating on removing those errors first

first thing i'd suggest is try disabling the gender specific animations

 

 

The gender specific animations isn't what I'm having trouble with, it's literally just the jumping animations for both gender which goes to a T, and the Sexlab animations which just has the actors standing there. It's not even a T, which makes me think it's a different problem, but I dunno. Will do an update.

I had a look at your papyrus log and it is throwing out tons of FNIS_aa.psc related errors. So yah, it is most probably an issue with FNIS.

 

As SumGuy suggested, try running FNIS without the Gender specific box ticked. Also, I didn't look at your whole mod list, but do you have all the mods you have the patches ticked for? if not, untick!

Anyway, about installing FNIS with MO: you did it the correct way. You have to install FNIS as a mod in MO, otherwise it won't see the mods that are installed. If you are also using the creature animations add-on, you have to install and MERGE it with FNIS itself. This also goes for any other FNIS addons that you added. So, install FNIS (call it FNIS as well, for brevity), then install FNIS Creatures, calling it FNIS as well, so you will get the option to merge. Do this for all FNIS add-ons, so you only have one mod called FNIS.

Then in MO, use the gears icon to setup FNIS to run through MO. Direct the binary to where the generator for users is (..\Mod Organizer\mods\FNIS\tools\GenerateFNIS_for_Users).

 

Also note that when FNIS does have a successful run, the generate files will end up in the "Overwrite folder". You have to make a "fake" mod of this. Right click on the overwrite folder, selecte "create mod", call it something simple, like FNIS Output, and create and activate.

More advice: given your heavy mod load, you also might want to look into getting Crash Fixes. This mod (attempts) to fix the most common causes for CTDs. Also read the whole mod description for some other handy tips (like setting uExterior Cell Buffer=0, so the system itself will use the best setting)

SO I KNOW WHAT WAS CRASHING THE GAME.

 

It was Floppy SoS. For some really odd reason, without it but with all other mods, even with my other mods back in, it ran smoothly and perfectly, albeit the T pose and the Sexlab animations not working, lol. I'll install Crash fixes and reinstall FNIS how you said, will post results, but this is what I got when installing from NMM then running from the Skyrim/data/tools folder.

EDIT: Reinstalling FNIS how you said loaded all the animations without problems, and though there are still lots of weird little glitches, my game is now actually playable. I'll mark this as solved with the problem in the title post, thank all of you for your help!  :D

I know this is a 1 year old post, and I hope someone get updated in this thread. I got problem with FNIS whenever I play with Wrath of Nature transformations. When I got in the animal form, whenever I press R (unsheath) there's chance of 50%+ CTD. I managed to pinpoint it was conflicted with FNIS when I made the profiles and tested them with WoN and FNIS.
I am still unsure what's the conflict between them. I didn't have Creature pack installed. Now I installed Creature pack to ensure if it works or not, the game still have CTD issue on the exact action I perform ® in my animal forms. This doesn't happen without FNIS though so it really is FNIS conflicting. As the solution by Vachnic, I merged the addons and tested again on my mod play, the same CTD issue still occurs.
