Review: Star Trek Online

Ark of Truth

Recommended Posts

So after playing Star Trek Online from the day it was released to now I have decided to do another review. So here it is.

Combat

All combat is done in instances which only party members can enter. PVP in this game is done in arenas, all combat types give exp and rewards which can be used to learn new skills and upgrade your character. During combat and mission your class may allow you to get a advantage on the battlefield or during a mission.

Dialogue

All dialogue is contain within pop-up boxes which sometimes will contain options which in most cases influence how a mission unfolds either result in success or failure. Some briefing include voice over's.

Story

The storyline is the same regardless of what race you play, but it is different for the faction you play. The factions are the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Defence force. The player will have the choice to chose one of the following classes for their race.

Tactical Officer [DPS] - Deals massive amount of damage on the battlefield. Tactical officer are skilled in making area of effect attacks more stronger as well as making each single attack from weapons have a better chance of doing critical damage.

Engineering Officer [Tanking] - Skilled in defence and making it harder for the enemy to claim victory. The engineering officer is able to buff teammates with survivability debuffs which can reduce enemy damage both in the ground and in space.

Science Officer[buff] - A officer skilled in ground healing as well as removing bad effects on other players. These officers when in the right ships can be unstoppable on the battlefield both in firepower and survivability. They are harder to master then the other two choices.

MISC

- Ground combat

- Several different types of weapon, consoles, armors and shields to choice from.

- Storyline with over 40 missions to complete.

- Free to play with Item mail and payment options, none of this is need to get to the big leagues.

- Choice your ship name and it appear on your ship.

- Shooter mode, no more selecting a target and pressing fire. Aim with the mouse and switch targets by spinning and firing away with a click.

Rating:

8 of 10

( -1 point for how the combat system is)

( -1 Can take Klingons have massive race advantage in PVP)

Oooh, you didn't even begin to touch on the options you have with mix-n-matching character and ship classes.

A Science officer in an Escort (Tactical ship), fir instances, has access to the only space power in the game that removes all the buffs on a target. Coupled with the Sci officer's AoE debuff power and the sheer firepower of an Escort, it's great. The only drawback is you lose the additional DPS buffs you'd have if you were a Tactical officer, so you won't be as powerful. And on top of that, at endgame, the variety in ship builds doubles. You have two Escorts, for example; one has an extra Engineering power slot, the other has an extra Science power slot. So you could be a Science officer in an Escort with a slight bias towards Engineering. There are a lot of combinations you can toy with. It's a ton of fun.

I will disagree on one point, though. Klingons have no advantage in PvP; this is a myth propagated by frustrated players who wind up facing off with Klingon premade teams or experienced players. The KDF is largely made up of players who have been long-time Klingon players, in the days when PvP was the only way to level. They also have a much smaller, and much more dedicated, player base. The difference in power literally boils down to "the KDF play more PvP than you."

There are Federation players of equal and greater skill, I assure you. Get in with the right Fleet (Guild) and get them to teach you the subtleties of the game mechanics, and you'll see that perceived difference in power vanish.

That' date=' good sir, was a splendid example of the rare "intraquote-post" in its natural habitat. Notice how the poster, instead of adding their reply [i']after[/i] the quote, instead opted to put it within the quote at the end. Truly an out-of-the box manoeuver.
