X-COM 2

CPU, no idea why you'd go with ironman considering the current performance; that's just asking for a crash and save-game corruption. Happened to me twice before I gave up on the setting.

I still play as if it's active, mind, but I prefer to have backup saves in case the game decides to play Russian Roulette with my save.

bjornk, as far as tactical game-play, you get more options once you get psionics.

I hesitate to call it better, because it makes the game too easy (even on legendary).

I did a full playthrough and I did not had a single crash.

Some glitches now and then yes, but nothing bad.

I played on the max settings for about 20 hours. With ironman.

Not a single crash or corrupted save. But actually I did not find the game way more complex than before.

And about psionics I did not use them in my first playthrough (because I discovered them too late.) But I will use them in this playthrough.

Then don't force yourself to use psionics all the time. And don't complain about how easy this game is, psy are obviously too strong. I have 1 and he is way too strong.

I find it more enjoyable for me to have more varied team, if people can roleplay in skyrim and restrict themselves from using shouts it shouldn't be a issue here to not use psys for more challenge.

Just enjoy the game how you want, don't force yourself to use X because its the most efficient. That way you won't find fun at all.

About crashes I had 2 crashes on mission loading screens but it was in the late game, there must be some kind of memory leak.

As for bugs I had spiting acid/tongue pulling through the wall, evac bug where I couldn't evac my last soldier and I lost him. Even though she was standing on the evac zone.

Some animation bugs and thats pretty much all. Nothing that would break my gameplay or make it unplayable.

Well, that's just another class with different abilities and I've always hated class-based games TBH. What I meant was, compared to, say JA2, especially to 1.13, this game is what I'd call a "lightweight" tactical game. There's no camouflage system that works only on specific terrain, no armor coverage system, no LBE equipment that effect your AP and speed, no weather/lighting conditions that affect visibility and range of sight, no item degradation and repair hence no jamming weapons, grenades refusing to explode etc... Enemy patrols ignore gunshots and explosions, soldier personalities have no effect on battlefield performance other than NPC's voice, getting wounded has no effect on skills/abilities/efficiency... and so on. I highly recommend checking out JA2 1.13 if you want to know what I'm talking about. X-COM 2 is pretty much a turn-based Mass Effect with top-down view...

Here's a YT link of a 1.13 LP, this is the most recent one I could find, but there are more.

Here is thing, at last this two games have something in common. Having 99 in acc skill or hit chance they tend to fucking miss quiet a lot.

Sorry, I could not resist. I played MGS TPP a lot, and hitting "Quiet" was extremely difficult.  :D

I don't recall missing shots with 90% plus CTH that often in JA2 1.13, but I've noticed that in all three X-COM 2 LPs I've been watching, seems quite common in X-COM 2 and pretty annoying.

I am missing shots at 98% probability to hit.

And the "random index seed" is stored in save games, so if you load the same game and re-try, you get exactly the same result.

(And I think this is good for a strategy game. It is strategy, not rolling dices.)

If a game's balance is terrible, I'll call it out. I'm not going to handicap myself because the developers couldn't be bothered to do their job.

Games aren't always about fun, otherwise there wouldn't be difficult games and horror games and all the others.

I don't play XCOM for fun. I play it because I want to beat it. And beating XCOM 2 on legendary ironman was disappointingly easy.

As for role-playing: no. Just no.

Don't try to project your likes and dislikes on me, please.

I completely agree on that.

I am doing the second playthrough using Legendary with Ironman. How much difficult compared to the default settings? Some extra misses on shots. No more than this.

(P.S. Will I complete it? Not sure, already lost interest in the game. Played only 105 hours, I played about 350 hours on FO4.)

Is this game a role playing game: hell no!!!

Been watching this one guy on YT, literally with my palm on my face. He's been playing the game on commander difficulty, doing every possible strategic mistakes, all the wrong moves in missions and he still manages to complete them with no casualties. I'd say this game is pretty forgiving. The guy also thinks that the looting system in Fallout 4 is "great", so no surprise there...

I am at 75% of the game on Legendary + Ironman difficulty.

And it is not really difficult. But at the end this is my review of this game (XCOM2):

  • Good rendering (positive)
  • Few glitches, not game breaking (positive)
  • Too easy (negative)
  • Too short, too way much short (extremely negative)
  • Good improvements and expansion during the game (positive)
  • Fairly good story (positive)
  • Good Creation Kit and Tutorials (positive)
  • Good customization of the characters  (extremely positive)

LOL, after having played it for nearly 20 years I'm still watching JA2 LPs and don't even get bored. It's definitely one of the best PC games ever. It's a turn-based tactical "RPG" by the way in case you didn't know and unlike XCOM 2, you get to meet NPCs, do quests etc. just like in any traditional RPG.

Looks like the newest version of 1.13 has added quite a few new features, including food & water consumption. Not sure if it will made it into the stable version eventually but one of the forks even adds diseases into the game, including pregnancy! Boy, how this game begs for adult mods... :D

Think I'm gonna install the newest 1.13 and start a new game... :D

Full name of the game, please?

LOL. Seriously? :D

It's Jagged Alliance 2. 1.12 is the last "official" version and the version 1.13 is the community patch that adds tons of new stuff and realism. 1.13 has been around for quite some time, in fact the last version I had played for a couple of years was 4870 which was released back in 2011. Haven't played it since I started playing Skyrim back in the summer of 2012, still on the harddrive of my old PC though.

You can buy the base game Jagged Alliance 2 on Steam, GOG (preferably) or maybe on Amazon (as a CD, which is also preferable). Not sure if you can run 1.13 on the Steam version, you probably can but I don't know how. Gold Edition/Pack is of course a better buy.

Don't want to spoil it, but there's already a porn shop and a brothel in one of the cities of Arulco. :D

Not sure if it runs on Win 8 and beyond but you probably can run it on a virtual machine running XP/Vista/7, but don't quote me on that.

I suppose the full definition of JA2 would be a "turn-based tactical open-world sandbox RPG". :D

If you have any other questions I'd be glad to help, it's always been one of my favorite games, if not the most favorite.

wow, i started a debate.
must say i didn't have time to read everything so i read a select few comments. ^^
i only want to make one thing clear.
when i play a game, i expect certain things to be well done, but what i really look for is the story.
and xcom 2 (in my opinion) got a monotone story called "aliens took over our world with politics!, rise up against it!"
there's nothing i disgust more then a monotone story and that's my main reason for not liking it.
the first xcom game had space for thought as it touched several subjects and even some if not all players question if the aliens are really "evil"
in xcom 2 the entire story can roughly be summarized in one line due to it not having any sociological dilemmas worth mentioning.

ell in 2 you can still question if they are evil. Sure they change us but is every change bad? Didn´t we evolve due to changes in our very being? Should not we always be willing too change us to be better then we now are? Sure it is told only this one way and you have to kind of make the exact Opposite Site up yourself but many good Storys have this. it´s only the question do you really want this. How much effort will you get into doing it.

  • 1 month later...

Don't have the game yet, but I've already thought about a mod idea while watching gameplay videos and writing here to remind myself what it was as if/when I get the game I might make it myself...

Idea:

Train militia in sectors that joined the resistance (a la JA2).

Details:

You basically make a one time investment in order to receive additional militia units to control on the battlefield if the mission takes place in a sector with trained militia. The militia have lower stats than regular rookies and they might join your team as a rookie if they get promoted on the battlefield and survive the mission.

  • You need to leave one of your soldiers (at least a sergeant or higher rank) as a trainer in a specific sector for 1 month to train the militia. You will not be able to use the trainer in any missions during this time.

  • The number of militia that may get added to your team is random, but it varies between 1 to trainer's rank minus one, which is the maximum number, but it also depends on the amount of supplies you spare for them. If 1 militia unit costs 'x' amount of supplies, the total cost to train militia in a sector will vary between x and x times trainer's rank 'r' minus one (x and x*(r-1)). 'x' needs to be lower than the price of recruiting one rookie, obviously.

  • Skills of the militia will obviously be lower than the trainer, but will also depend on the rank of the trainer. The better the trainer the better the skills.

  • Additional balancing is obviously required. A cool-down might be added, or if all militia die on the battlefield you may need to train more.

  • This may be used as a skill, if you pick it up for one of your higher rank soldiers. In other words, if you want militia support (you may not want it in every mission), you choose a soldier with this skill for the mission.

  • Militia will probably have a pistol only, or a shotgun/SMG and nothing else.

I hope there isn't a hard limit on the number of controllable units on the battlefield...

Looks like something like this have made it into a mod as a new type of retaliation mission, though nowhere near as complex as what I've suggested. Just saw it in Chris Odd's LP...
