Broken Save?

Yeah, so, I have a save that's not working. I load it up, it works for a second, then it freezes while the audio keeps going. The first thing I thought to do was reinstall all the mods I was using with that save. Didn't work, same results. Yet, somehow, another save I have with the same load list works just fine (tested before reinstalling mods). I don't know what the deal is, but there is absolutely no way in hell I'm starting that character over. I've already had to do that with another, I'm not doing it again.

There has to be some way to fix this. Please help me.

Well there may be but we need more info. What all did you uninstall? You may have only partially removed something which is what is causing the hang.

Another thing to try is disabling all but a few mods and see if you can get it to load long enough to make a clean save and then add stuff back in.

I uninstalled Monster Girl: Rumare Mermaid (don't need it anymore thanks to Apocalypse version), a wig set, a clothing set, a CM Partner, a race, and I reinstalled Better Cities (but only the Imperial City now has different settings, and she's in Leyawiin).

The CM Partner and race were both held up by an ESM, but even then the save should still work. My other one did after I disabled them, and I have no problems with it.

I've actually tried making a clean save the way you said, but that save just freezes as well.

Have you looked at the save in Wyre to see if it sees any conflicts?

Yes, and there's plenty. It's weird, though - my load order matches up with the save, with the exception of those few files, yet all of my mods except for the ESMs and the last five on my list are orange. I don't know why... if I it matches up with my load order, should the files be green until I scroll down to the ones I don't have, where everything after should be orange?

Ok, in Wrye under the saves tab select the savegame you can't load and the one you can. Then right click on one of them and choose "Diff Masters" It will check to see what exactly is different in case you are visually missing something.

Hate to say it, but sometimes, saves just break and aren't recoverable. It happended to me 3 times so far on a level 15 character.

Never, ever use the quicksave. It's known for not being reliable. I'm also reluctant using autosaves and streamsaves, but that's just me being paranoid. Save often, in different slots, so if it happens again, you wont loose too much progress.

This is what it says has been removed.

However, I don't see how that could be affecting the save, especially seeing as how my other character's save is still working. I'm in Leyawiin, near the castle, so that definitely knocks out Better Imperial City. I think.

...Well, I'll try to reinstall them anyway. But not tonight, I'm too tired.

I'll post the results when I get it done.

BEFORE: doing any of the below make a copy of the bad save game and store it else where.

Using Wrye you can right click on the "bad" save game and select "load Masters" this will load your current masterlist. You can then go over and right click on the far right column (a box will pop up saying...are you sure...) and disable the following:

• MONSTERGIRL-Rumare Mermaid.esp

• Female Lich.esp

• Creatures 20.esp

If you are going to use Better cities then I would reinstall the missing esp's or if not then remove them per the above. Once you are done removing masters don't forget to hit the save button right under the masterlist on that far right column.

Then launch the game and load that save to see if you have fixed it.

Reinstalling the masters and reconfiguring the load order to match perfectly did not help.

Using the Load Masters function did nothing either.

Now, I can get the save to run long enough to make a clean save, but that save doesn't seem to work anymore than the original one. After reconfiguring the load order, my character's save now shows up with a green checkbox. Still, I can only get it to run for a few seconds. Also, after reconfraggling the load order, my other two character's checkboxes were red, but I was still able to run them much better than my problem character's save and get a working clean save for both. For all I know, this is probably something beyond a save game issue. Is it a data overload? Is it a glitch in the game itself? For now, I'm going to post my load order, even though I'm almost certain that it has nothing to do with the problem.

Here it is, with the exception of those mods I tried to get rid of, because it apparently doesn't matter whether I have them or not.

I am suspecting that some meshes/textures/animations have been removed. That is all I can think of that would cause the save not to load. Unless of course that particular save is simply "broken". Perhaps one of the folks smarter than me have some ideas.

I cant uninstall "Real lights" mod. When i deactivate its esp, saves dont load to the end and game crash. Please help!

Stranger post you load order. It is likely that the esp you disable is a master of another file thus causing the crash.

That's a known issue, at least for the version I'm using, which is the one from All Natural. If I ever need to update All Natural, I can disable all except real lights and clean save, before updating All Natural. Disabling Real Lights just makes the save unloadable.

Does better cities move any doors? Keep in mind, door locations are saved in your savegame, so disabling such mods can have bad results. One of the main reasons I haven't tried better cities, apart from all the compatability issues it can cause.

Does that mean i am going to play with this mod until i die? No solution? :huh:

I don't know of any way except starting a new save, without that mod loaded. There may be a solution, but I don't know about it.

This Maybe Has Nothing To Do With The Problem But . When I Installed Wrye Bash

It Automatically Put A Bashed Patch ESP In My Data Folder Ive Never Had It Activated

Now I Removed This When I Removed Cursed Armor Because As I Didnt Make It

I Didnt Think I Would Need It But Since Putting It Back In My Data Folder Not Activated

My Problem Has Seemed To Have Rectified Itself . Coincedence Maybe ?

Possibly. To check open wrye and look at the save that you thought was bad (click the saves tab). Then left click on that save and look at the right hand column of masters and see if the bashed patch is in there. You might have enabled it by accident at some time.

As to wrye automatically putting it in there....it does this because they assume you will want to use it (it is the main reason people get wrye to be honest). It is a "powerful" tool to minimize conflicts.

Autosave and quicksave are known causes of CTD's, not to mention notorious for corrupting save games. It is best to turn autosaving off and NEVER quicksave. Always manual save and if that is too much of a hassle then consider getting Streamline and/or CASM (both have an autosave feature that actually works!).

Crashing on manual saving is indeed a VERY bad sign. Hit the help button in wrye (bottom bar on the far right) and go to the save features. They may have some options for you to try before you abandon that save.
