From Head to Toe - Useful Hints for Virtual Photography

Through modding, the aesthetics of my followers - both clad in armor for the battlefield, and during life's more intimate moments - have much improved.  Being able to fine tune an aspect of a character to your liking, appreciate it; and then after a while think to yourself "this is great but it could be better" is a great experience.

You only have to look at my earlier blog entries compared to my latest ones to see how my models have evolved over time.   Two elements I've only recently mastered were heads, and feet.

Heads, or rather the hair upon them, used to be a problem.  The fact that many of the follower customization mods I've downloaded had been created with long hair was an issue.  Many mods seem to have been created with a specific body shape in mind; often vanilla.

Because I use CBBE 3BA custom bodies to override the default body shape of my followers, long hairstyles would often "clip" through their character models - most noticeably their breasts - in a way I found unacceptable.  Armor was the same, but less annoying as you're not looking at them at much during battle.

The solution that eventually occurred to me was to see if I could find a mod to equip followers with wigs.  As usual the first time I loaded the mod through Nexus and launched the save, I was prepared for something bad like maybe the wig equipping but overlapping the hair she already had.  But it worked and she had new hair.

I basically decided for my followers that long flowing hair and suits of armor with interlocking plates and chainmail weren't necessarily a practical combination.  Plus shorter hair helps when making pictorials as it won't get in the way.  There are many choices.

In the example below, the original version of the mod had much longer hair originally and this is after:

Clipping, the constant enemy.  Not only can you be about to take that cover photo only to notice that her long hair is unnaturally flowing through her breasts - her feet may have partially sunk into the floor.

Feet were another dilemma for me that I've only recently solved.  Some poses in the mods I've used looked great from most angles, but then I'd see that her feet were clipping through the floor in that position.

At first there wasn't an obvious solution because the animations didn't have the collision data for the feet and I didn't know how to add it.  Shoes also just clipped through the floor even when standing.

This High Heels Fix mod was the answer https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/18045

This mod adds collision data for high heels which corrects character position so the shoes aren't clipping through the ground.  Which is good in standing poses.  Plus, if they're in a different position it will still adjust it so you can see their feet completely.

Sometimes this might mean the model is slightly floating to compensate for this adjustment.  I've noticed it in some shots but still kept them, and coming back it's less noticeable than before.

And that is how the head - more precisely the hair - and the feet can be approached using the right mods.
