No Background Music

Hey there Ladies and Gentlemen I hope you can help me with a little problem I have with Skyrim. x)

 

For a while now I can't hear any music, originally I thought I had turned it off which I sometimes did in order to play an itunes playlist while playing skyrim but that isn't the case anymore.

 

I do have a music overhaul mod installed and I already tried disabling or deinstalling it. I also tried asking steam if some files were missing but it never made a difference.

 

The thing is: I CAN hear music sometimes when I load a save game but only for up to three seconds while it gets quieter and ultimately disappears completely.

All teh other sounds work flawlessly.

Interesting. Does the music play during a new game?

It could be a corrupted save. Needs to be cleaned and so on... I'm starting to feel like a broken record.

Other possible issues are wrong load order and straggling files that won't remove themselves from your Skyrim installation directory so you have to go in and manually remove them yourself (exactly like a manual uninstall). Take for example you still have a script in the game's data folder telling the game to play music that you uninstalled eons ago so when you start your game the music is silent but the game thinks it's still playing the music you installed long ago... but the music files ain't there no mo'!

That... makes a shitload of sense and I wonder why I didn't think of this myself.

Doubt it's the loadorder as I use LOOT to generate it for me, but I'll try all the things you just said.

I do not know where these texts are (section).

You can not edit these texts manually, if you do not know what was written there first.

A very good advice!

Make a backup copy of your data folder, then a complete uninstall + both INI files.

Then reinstall, only so the INI files are rewritten, when that is done, copy your backup copy (DATA) back to the game.

This usually takes 30 minutes.

Thank you, I tried it with ID's of vanilla songs but since they are overwritten already that might not be something that helps. Or rather it didn't help.
I'll go digging in tes5edit for specific mod music id's any try it again as soon as I can and then report back.

Have you made sure that your audio drivers are up to date?

Do you experience this with other games?

Have you checked your audio and speaker settings?

 

Also if you use a microphone.. make sure steam or any other voice chat program is not muting your game by checking those settings.

(you could also try muting steam in the audio control panel to see if it changes anything)

 

Another source of information would be post #5 in this thread.. Also check post #11 - ETA: start with 11 because it is easier
