CTD Hell, concerns Sexlab

So I just spent a good 5 hours trying to figure this out. I've never had this much trouble modding other Bethesda games...

 

I'm crashing when I load a character. And not just any character, it's right when I get into the Keep in the beginning with Ralof/Hadvar. I'll do a Quicksave, exit to desktop, and reload only to find a CTD WITH or WITHOUT changing settings from default on any plugin. I'm fully aware of the free camera issue with Sexlab Framework, and have that checked off, but the problem comes from elsewhere. The character I'm starting is female, if that matters.

 

Furthermore, after deselecting many plugins/masters (leaving barebones Sexlab/MCM/etc.) I can sometimes load the failing game, but afterward it might not load. From that point, even if I load without any mods, it CTDs without fail. I mention this to make note of how I can't really diagnose the problem by loading plugins/masters one by one.

 

So, anyone have any ideas? Much appreciated.

also, do you need nude suits when you have cbbe installed, might want to check that

CBBE just covers female bodies right? The other is a male body model.

 

I switched the load order to like you said and also waited until the beginning sequence was over to load all the mods and, so far, it seems okay. With my luck, I'll be running into new (or the same) problems soon, but here's to hoping it's good now.

I used SOS a little and it worked somewhat, but the schlong sizes wouldn't change for me. Stayed a little too small for me to use. Maybe there was some patch or something I missed.

Schlong size is adjustable in the MCM menu and you can also give Essence of Dragon potions to NPCs/PC to increase the size as well.

The game is playable now, but has some stability issues.

 

I'm able to go anywhere (so far). However, saves in some areas will lead to CTDs on load, so I have to be constantly checking my saves to make sure they're stable. I don't think it's textures or meshes, I'm thinking it's a problem with loading preset scripts (ex: story based scripts) but I can't be sure. On a related note, I CTD if I try and change the timescale, though it's a CTD on loading a save, NOT immediately.

 

I just got the Permormance Monitor, is there a tool for seeing reports of what caused Skyrim to fail? edit: changing the Skyrim.ini to show crash reports

I'm thinking I've just got a bad mod somewhere...

First off, have you even cleaned your files with Tes5Edit? Secondly, are you using the Unofficial Patches? Thirdly, have you verified your cache via Steam yet to make sure everything is 100%? Forthly, have you ran BOSS to sort your load order and find out what needs to be cleaned?

 

As well, what is your computer specs? It may be a simple ran out of memory issue, or you have an over abundance of scripts running. You have a ton of SexLab mods, maybe it is just overkill on all the scripts. You don't seriously need all of those do you? That just might be the issue right there. As well, it seems like you removed a bunch of mods, and the scripts are still trying to run in your save game. But it's causing errors cause the mods don't exist anymore. You can't delete mods with scripts after you already have a save with them in it. They are permanently embedded in your save file. Look at it like this. Once you start a new game, whatever mods you have enabled, you are now stuck with. If you delete script mods, you have to start a new game otherwise you will get tons of errors from the scripts still running in your save and it will cause crashes and instability.

 

Lastly, Steam/Skyrim is not installed in your Program Files directory is it? That can cause issues as well. And why install everything via NMM? A lot of those mods can be installed manually, and are actually better off installed manually as sometimes NMM will mess them up on the install.

I had this once with a reinstall. It had to do with increasing the values in the Skyrim .ini files for improved graphics. Saves remember those .ini settings and if the .ini gets changed, saves stop working until you restore the .ini to how it was.

I've used Tes5Edit and BOSS, Edit says everything's fine, BOSS says there's a few dirty edits; cleaning now. I'm also installing the Unofficial Patch, didn't have that. Everything's verified with Steam.

 

I don't think it's RAM. I'm running Win 8.1, 8gb RAM, GeForce GT 755M, 2.4Ghz, 64-bit. I'm running max ultra-high settings and things load so fast in the vanilla game, I can't even read the blurbs in the loading screens. Thanks for the point on deleting mods, I see why it was a bad idea to diagnose via unchecking plug-ins.

 

It is, Steam put it in Program Files (x86) with steamapps like most other things. In what way does that create issues? And it just seemed easier to install everything by NMM, makes the process easier in general, though I can see what you mean. I guess some things don't need it.

 

I'll let you know what I get after I've made those changes.

Downside to using Program Files (x86), is DEP. Windows uses Data Execution Prevention, and it causes issues with games. It's best to install Steam outside of the Program Files, like for instance C:\Steam works just fine. It will save you the trouble of dealing with DEP and it closing your games cause it thinks they are a threat.

 

But pretty much any mod can be installed manually. The only mods that I install via NMM, are the ones that actually require NMM. Like ones that use an fomod folder are best installed via NMM. Everything else can be installed manually, and would be better installed manually. This way you have control over it and know that it installed properly.

 

But yeah, when it comes to modding, you're basically married to your mods when you start a new game with them. The only stuff that is safe to delete is simple things. Like texture replacements/edits, body mods, armors and weapons (as long as they don't use scripts), etc. If you remove script mods, you gotta start a new game. Otherwise those scripts that you removed will corrupt your save.

 

So when it comes to modding, choose wisely and pick mods that you can't live without and would never get rid of. And keep a backup save at all times, for the times you want to try out new script mods. This way, if you don't like it, you can revert to your backup without the scripts.

Thanks for the advice, and the game seems to be much more stable now after cleaning and installing those patches.
