Introduction

Even with the Creation Kit not available yet, there are already quite a few mods i can recommend. They do improve the current gameplay and should be installed (for) now.

Version 1.0 will come with the release of the 'Creation Kit'. With all the mods dropping constantly the number will rise fast anyway... ?

Note

There are a few mods out that use batches to modify the game. I'll not add those as they, afaik, can't be reverted once used and possibly mess up your savegame.

Tips and Tricks (Game)

Skills

Spoiler

Essential

Those are imho essential for the game.

Spoiler

Ballistics                               You'll mostly get ballistic weapons and all will benefit from this.

Boost Pack Training             Without it you won't be able to use one.

Commerce                           Will massively increase your funds and decrease the price of all things you buy (even ships and parts for them).

Medicine                              Makes survival easier.

Persuasion                           You'll talk a lot and persuading NPC will help in a lot of situations.

?Buying a 'Neurocom' in 'Neon City' will give a bonus to the skill.

Piloting                                Needed to fly better ships.

Security                                You won't get around to pick locks. So train this skill.

Spacesuit Design                 Spacesuits are bulky and heavy. This will later help with that issue.

Weight Lifting                      Now you can carry more. Its no fun to be overloaded...

Exploration

As exploration is not everyones cup of tea i'll keep it separate.

Spoiler

Botany                                 Faster scanning of plants and makes them usable in an outpost. But get 'Zoology' first.

Surveying                             Better range for the scanner helps a lot (especially with flying or aggressive creatures).

Zoology                               Get this advanced skill asap (i recommend at least rank 2). Plants usually don't run away or try to eat you...

I'll be watching this, for sure.

It's going to be a mad mess, once the mod community "breaks the seal" and everyone starts churning out their own (nigh-indistinct) tweaks on the same aspect of the game.

Reshades and outfit retextures abound!

In your eyes, though, do you think there are going to be any substantive developments by this community before the CK gets released?  Or are we largely in a holding pattern, picking at the surface-level stuff until then?

To work on the more complicated mods the modders will need access to the 'Creation Kit'. Atm we only get mods that scratch on the surface of the game (like textures and sound). I was honestly surprised to see that the first scripted mods appeared (and worked).

The good thing is that, when the CC shows up, we should have all the texture replacers we need already in place.

I suspect that till CC is out the most interesting mods will be SFSE, as mods built on it mostly do not interact with the CC or official modding tools in any way. (However, they do require lots of painstaking work from the authors of SFSE to make it able to do more interesting things.)

Just FYI, there's a beta version of MO2 available now only available on their Discord. It supports SF without using the plugin. It's working great for me. The link to the Discord is on the MO2 mod page.

Ok, working here too. I'll update the link. Done
