Help me fix CTD on load and I reward you.

Can anyone here who is more familiar than I at troubleshooting mods / crash logs take a look at this?

 

I am getting CTD on load before the menu finishes loading. I have included two different log files. Hopefully someone can help me decipher. 

 

Beers or pizza on me for whoever helps me fix this s*** so I can go back to playing.

Done I endorsed, but now I am having some other troubles. My game seems to load and run fine until I try to pause my game (esc) and it CTD.

Does DejaGFxLogger mean anything to you?

 

Your issue is most likely in Interface/Quest_Journal.swf, so:

  1. If you have a mod that unpauses the game while a menu is open (such as that Dark Souls mod) remove or temporarily disable it. These are known to cause CTDs occasionally.
  2. If you have a UI mod that changes the swf file above, remove or temporarily disable it.

Thats from the mod called Dear Diary. Its part of the mod collection I am using and have built my game install off of. before I started adding all my extra mods to the install it was stable and would not CTD in the menu's hardly at all. Now it seems like the crashes are pretty consistent. I will try re downloading Dear Diary and any associated mods and re install, maybe its a file conflict issue.

BetterThirdPersonSelection is in the call stack on that latest log. A mod I see frequently in crash logs around here.

 

Edit: Crash logs in general are not 100%. If something is "defnintely not the cause of this crash" generating another crash log in a different location in the game can be helpful. Sometimes random things get the blame for some obscure crash. I have Dear Diary myself, Dear Diary-23010-3-0-3-162106377 with Dear Diary Dark Mode (texts - warm color)-60837-1-0-0-1640933185. Never crashed because of it. Skyrim ver 1.5.97.

Right now I am still working on trying to resolve this. Working on getting my creation kit properly working so I can set masters or whatever. Still not sure on how to do that.

  1. Latest crash log is most likely BetterThirdPersonSelection, not too many references.
  2. Why don't you test whether you have too many references yourself? The link you provided seems to have instructions.
  3. xEdit is going to be better for adding masters than the CK. While it's easy to do in the CK as well, its really unintuitive.
    • CK:
      1. Set the mod you're modifying as active.
      2. Select additional master files.
      3. OK.
      4. Save the plugin.
    • xEdit:
      1. Select the mod you're modifying.
      2. Select additional master files.
      3. OK.
      4. Right click on your mod -> Add masters
    • If you need to delete masters, I'd recommend only using xEdit.
      1. Remove all references to the master from all recrods. You may have to do this manually.
      2. Right click your mod and select the option to clean or remove unused masters.

I did all that and this is the result originally: Found 683955 temporary and 158266 persistent loaded references, for a grand total of 842221 loaded references.

 

and then I cleaned it up and cut the number in over half but the game when launched still gives me this warning and throws out that 800K+ number after ive done this. 

 

I am stumped.

@traison I have curated my entire mod list and do not plan to do anything more but I am now once again running into CTD on game load before menu. (I can deal with the occasional crash due to the clothing physics mod until fixed. But at least 80% + playable it felt. )

 

 

I have tried already to remove all mods downloaded beyond a certain point to try and resolve. 

 

I fixed the active Ref count error by taking the biggest offenders and cleaning them / flagging I think. 

 

Unsure on how to fix cyclical load issues. 

 

Bash keeps yelling at me about:

 

Delinquent Masters

The following plugins have delinquent masters, i.e. masters that are set to load after their dependent plugins. The game will try to force them to load before the dependent plugins, which can lead to unpredictable or undefined behavior and must be corrected.

•  AddItemMenuSE.esp

•  BountiesRedone_MissivesExtension.esp

 

I am not sure how to go about resolving this but theres a lot of these conflicts and many of them were not there before.

it turns out that they are no longer available - either look in your own archive to see if you still have the mods - which these "masters" bring with you...


...otherwise it means -> download these mods again - install and activate them


all this is "the daily bread" when modding games

I don't know if they use a tool for installation like "Vortex" or "Mod Manager 2"...
...even with those, the user always has to make the decision himself - for example in the case of conflicts with the loading sequence. These tools make suggestions - but firstly not always and secondly they can also be wrong (they are based on the version number, among other things)


And when uninstalling mods, they don't work properly - there are always "leftovers" - but they affect the game (I currently have several cases myself)


If it's too "messed up" - the only thing that helps is the "Atomic Option" -> uninstall game - deleting the directory of the game HART - including the saved games (because these are usually bugged too)


And reinstall everything - pay careful attention to load order sequence and other dependencies...
..and after EVERY major mod group -> test the game with a NEW character
(especially mods that bring an MCM - need time until everything initializes - it can take 10-15 minutes)


But this testing is really important - so that if there is an error in the installation, you don't just add another mod and another...

This is why I abandoned Vortex way back in the day. MO2 has no risk of this because of how it was implemented. If this happens it's 100% user error (ie. bodyslide created files in the overwrite directory and the user did not deal with this, or was not aware of this).

 

Anyhow, as for your latest 2 crash logs. The call stack is suspiciously short again so the "why" is missing; however the "what" is Lux - Wyrmstooth.esp, formids 0x24506BEA and 0x24082777, one of which is unknown and the other a cell, apparently.

 

And for the plugin reference loop. I would assume since you asked about changing plugin masters recently that this is something you did. I doubt anyone would release a plugin with a reference loop, it's a bit too obvious. If this truly is a proper reference loop then the solution is only simple in theory: break the loop. What it means in practice however is what I posted in my previous post in this thread: go through the plugin and remove all references to the master plugin, then clean/remove the unused master. Personally I wouldn't embark on this as the odds are the gutted mod will not work after something like this.

I figured out the cyclical  load order issue and now bash does not yell at me about anything before masters. I also have reduced active references by 2/3 , I have once again fixed the CTD on game load. However the only reproducible crash I am getting right now is CTD when I try to pause game / journal. And now when try to load a save or start a new one from scratch. I am able to load into the main menu okay.

I cannot seem to find the patch esp / esl file for myrwatch anywhere however when you google it, it does show up on peoples webpages that list their installed mods or whatever. 

and example of what I am talking can be seen here: https://modwat.ch/u/skga16 the very last mod bottom of page. So I know the files / patch did exist somewhere at some point I am just having trouble tracking this down. If I could find it and get it running its just one less thing to populate the crash log.   

 

Deleted Base Records

The following plugins have deleted base records. If another plugin references the deleted record, the resulting behavior is undefined. It may CTD, fail to delete the record or do any number of other things. They can only be fixed manually, which should usually be done by the mod author. Failing that, the safest course of action is to uninstall the plugin.

•  BardsRebornStudentofSong.esp: 1 deleted base record

•  CACO Curios Patch.esp: 16 deleted base records

•  College Of Winterhold - Quest Expansion.esp: 1 deleted base record

•  Guard Dialogue Overhaul.esp: 1 deleted base record

•  HouseOfHorrorsQuestExpansion.esp: 2 deleted base records

•  Realm of Lorkhan - Custom Alternate Start - Choose your own adventure.esp: 18 deleted base records ( I suspect that this may be the culprit of the CTDs ) What do you think? 

 

Can anyone ELi5 how this happens and what I would need to do to fix? 

 

I will also try to disable HDT entirely for the time being, because Its yelling at me about HDT again.

Anyways any further advice would be appreciated. Hopefully this is the last time I have to bother you guys. If I can just resolve this crap I intend to finally just play and touch nothing ever again. turn off all auto updates etc.
