Very unusual dialogue bug with merchants/innkeepers

Hello, I'm looking for some help with a rather unusual bug that's affecting all merchants and innkeepers in my game. The issue is that the dialogue options that let me initiate trade or rent a room in an inn are no longer appearing. When I talk to an innkeeper for example, I see all the other usual dialogue options, but "What have you got for sale?" and "May I rent a room?" are both completely missing. The frustrating part is that this issue doesn't crop up until part way through a playthrough. If I start a new game the issue isn't present, but it will eventually crop up, and when it does it seems to get baked into the save and there's no way to reverse it as far as I can tell (other than loading an old save).

 

Has anyone else encountered this issue before? It's been very hard to diagnose and reproduce because it seems to happen at random. I really have no idea what's causing the issue. Everything will be working fine and then I'll go to sell something and suddenly there's no option for it. Best I can tell the issue starts happening while I'm in a dungeon, but it's hard to be sure since there are obviously no innkeepers or merchants in dungeons.

 

Any advice would be much appreciated. I'm hoping to get to the root of the problem, but suggestions for workarounds would also help. I've installed the QuickTrade mod so I can at least trade with NPCs using a hotkey, but there's still no way to rent a room.

I *think* you might have posted this (or similar) over at nexus, to which I already responded, but in case you didn't, here are a couple things you can try before digging into load orders and randomly uninstalling or disabling mods and so forth

 

1) from console mode (~), issue the command enableplayercontrols. 

see the link for an explanation of what it does.  I do it as a matter of principle when troubleshooting an inability to interact, but tbh I don't recall if it has any impact on vendor interactions. 

 

2) from console mode (~), issue the command player.tai

see the link for a *partial explanation of what it does. What it doesn't say is this, if tai is toggled OFF for the player, the player cannot interact with many things like crafting stations and afaik, vendors...  I've run into this with vendors a few times and I'm almost sure I solved it using player.tai 

 

If neither works, (and presuming it worked "before"), a tried and true method (presuming you don't have some mod that's screwing things up) is to backstep in your save files until you find one where it works correctly, then step back one more save, just to make sure that the one you just found that works correctly, isn't going to inadvertently introduce whatever glitch caused it in that session, to your next save.

Thanks for the response! I will give your suggestions a try. It wasn't me who posted on the Nexus, but it's good to know that I'm not the only one having this issue. In my initial troubleshooting I didn't come across anyone else with this exact problem.

 

I've been working on this modlist for the past two years or so and the issue only recently started happening, so I'm thinking that it has something to do with a relatively new mod (since I don't install many older mods at this point), or a mod conflict that I just haven't found yet. 

 

Edit: @anjenthedog Unfortunately neither of those commands fixed the issue. Thanks for trying!

Well, if you installed something very recently, (ie the problem exhibited after installing a mod or mods) another punt position is to uninstall mods in reverse order of installation until you find the culprit.  doing it in reverse order ensures that you don't accidentally screw up the load order and leave yourself even more humped...

Thanks for the advice. The tricky thing with uninstalling mods in reverse order is that I don't know what's triggering the issue and therefore it's very difficult to reproduce. It isn't present when I start a new game so I'd have to play through until I maybe encounter it at random. If I don't encounter it after an hour of playing then I might think it's resolved, but maybe the issue crops up at the hour-and-a-half mark. See what I'm saying? If I don't know how to reproduce the issue then it's a nightmare to fix it with the tried-and-true method of uninstalling mods until I find the culprit.

 

I did also try backtracking through my saves when I first encountered the issue. I identified the first save with the issue and tried starting from the one before that, but after a few more saves the issue was present again. That's what's so frustrating about this issue. It crops up seemingly at random so if I don't visit any merchants or inns for a little while it's possible for me to go several saves without realizing it's happening. 

 

Anyway, thanks again for the responses. I'm going to look through my more recent installs and see if I can pinpoint anything that might logically cause this issue. Otherwise I guess I'll just learn to live with it.

 

Edit: Just giving an update to say that the issue seems to be due to the mod Relationship Dialogue Overhaul - Update and MCM. I found a couple other  users claiming to have the same problem with that mod. I haven't found a fix yet, but at least I know which mod to uninstall now.

Found the culprit

That was me on nexus I think, having the exact same bug start about a week ago in a game with about one hundred save. Restarted a game with almost the same load order (just a few mods removed) and got to about level 3 and the bug reappeared today.

Do you happen to use the mod Relationship Dialogue Overhaul - Update and MCM by mnikjom on the Nexus? There's a thread in the comments section of that mod where a few users are also reporting this issue. There's no fix yet unfortunately, but that mod does seem to be the one that's causing this issue. RDO has a feature that disables interactions with unfriendly NPCs, so it seems like that feature is bugging out for some people.

well for me im having a much worse problem. Ive tried getting rid of mods like the infinite gold for merchants and such(all files erased)reinstalled skyui,RDO,glad youre here.mainly theses solutions,all didnt work , and  were all part of this issue with merchant inventory not appearing after they say their dialogue. Starting a new game didnt help either also tried that also.Im running out of ideas is there any way someone can help its such a pain with every fix i could find its very annoying disabling mods all resulted in crash so i cant see what is causing the issue
