Code Vein

Wasn't going to do this since when I first started it I wasn't enjoying Code Vein initially as I don't like overly punishing games (especially when it's a story based one like Code Vein) but since I've started playing it again I've found myself enjoying it a lot more so I thought I'd do one of my """""""""""""reviews""""""""""""" for it. Also in the spoiler below is a screenshot of my character in the game (yes her outfit is modded.)

So first things first this game is made for a controller, I've been playing it with mouse and keyboard and while it works well enough if you want a hack 'n' slash the gifts (abilities in this game) are mapped to the f keys (f1 through 8 specifically) and in order to get them you have to hold down the right shift button so that means you need to take your hand off either the mouse or the WASD keys (the movement keys, as is standard) which is obviously NOT a good idea in a soulsbourne-esque game (even with my limited experience with them) it also leaves you with a few useless keys around the left hand area of the keyboard since parrying is mapped to the left alt key (the left shift is used for sprinting or used in conjuntion with your scroll wheel to swap weapons) and what makes this even more annoying is the fact you CAN'T remap this particular key, almost every other keybind can be remapped except for this one.

As for the story, the story is actually really fucking good and has branching endings, I fucked up on one of the chapters so I don't think I'm getting the best ending, and in order to get the best ending you have to explore every inch of every map and if you ask me the entire plot could fit really well as an anime series (maybe a 12 episode season) it does switch about 5 maps in from being about finding the source of things called blood beads which 90% of the people living in this world need to survive (being a bit generous with that number probably) as they are all revenents, not quite vampires and not quite zombies as they need blood to survive and came back from the dead but don't suffer the weaknesses of either (can go out in daylight unlike vampires and are intelligent unlike zombies) but before the start of the story these beads have been harder and harder to come by as they can only be found at places called blood springs which have been drying up so you and your merry band of misfits set out to find the source of all blood beads but around map 5 you find the source and the story switches to finding and protecting things called successors. I won't go into anymore on the story but I am really enjoying it but that might be my inner weeb speaking.

Now finally the gameplay a game "journalist" moaned about dying in three hits and the bosses constantly spamming massive attacks but, invoking the broken clock rule here, they're right and this is a massive reason why I don't generally play soulsbourne games especially since there are no ranged weapons in this game so your only way of hitting at range are using your gifts (refer to aforementioned control issues as to why that's harder than it needs to be if you play with keyboard and mouse) which use ichor (think MP with a fancy name) which is obviously limited. As for getting out the way good luck with that as your basic fucking attacks are linked to stamina (which I don't remember it being in Bloodbourne at least) which is also used to evade which no matter any attempt to make a game more difficult is a stupid fucking way to design ANY combat system I can accept stamina being consumed with heavy attacks but not your basic attack and is a major reason why I quit the game ages ago.

So as you may have realised I effectively ragequit this game so why am I back to it? I'll admit here I am using cheat engine to get rid of some frustrations yes I know cheating bad but I'm the first person to hold up my hands up and say I'm actually pretty shit at video games for the most part I'm usually along for the story and the music (music in this game is actually pretty good) and ordinarily if I found myself getting even more annoyed at my shittiness at a game I tend to drop it, I did this with bloodbourne, but in this case I really wanted to know what happened with the story. So why the """""""""""""review""""""""""""" if I did this? I'm not going to lie I mostly wanted to moan about the control setup on mosue and keyboard (something you can moan about regardless of how you're playing it) and talk a bit about how I felt the story could be used for an anime series. As I said I ordinarily wouldn't do this for a game like Dark Souls which, from what I know of it, doesn't have a concrete story to it and is just boss battle after boss battle.

I too have had many issues with the keyboard/mouse setup. But there are many other irritating factors that have dampened any enthusiasm I had for playing. Much of this will seem to be just personal tastes, but I am reluctant to try other playthroughs since I haven't been able to mod it effectively.

What I hate; The combat system is buggy, and frustrating at times with certain weapon builds. I can find myself travel past the target a lot, as the animation vs hit-box contact timing is off. I can only tell if I've struck the enemy by their health bar, and have stuck with Halberd-type weapons to counter this, as its reach can compensate for bypassing the target. Another thing is the Drain Attack. By design, this is supposed to be a slow attack, with the drawn out animations more for show than speed. The best way to use it is the Backstab method, but If I could shorten the activation time, I'd find it more useful in combat instead of ignoring the feature as I often do. Then there are the rifles, which are often just as slow unless you're using it as a halberd. It takes after the God Eater series (oh yeah, have to have BIG weapons in the game to feel special!!!) and just like many JRPGs, guns have to be slow and bulky to give the sensation of powerful blasts. I'd like to see more compact, semi-auto weapons that be rapidly deployed AND useful at close range, but still can be large and showy. Lastly, I agree on the Stamina usage. It does seem to need some tweaking to be much more appropriate in some circumstances.

Annoying; The character customization is not bad, but does need better options and sliders when equipping belts, straps and other accessories, and would like to see more variety in clothing, like swapping parts of the premade sets around. I'm a perfectionist when it comes to making the overall look of my character (with the many options available), so this is more annoying to me than to others. And on a separate note, I find the Target-Lock mechanic slightly buggy as well, as it will sometimes disappear from the initial targets in combat, and some enemies have a target lock indicator show up outside of their hit-zone, so you'll miss damaging them.

And, as a different annoyance factor (a major one with me) is why do the damn conversations and storytelling just drag on and on? It's like talking to someone with an attention span of a puppy, or a really slow child! And why can I NOT run inside the 'memories' instead of plodding along at a pace only snails and slugs envy? I'm really glad I can skip past this slow narrative style. If I feel I've missed anything, I'd watch the story walkthrough outside of the game on YouBoobTube.

I think I'll try it again if I can find enough mods that can take some of the reluctance of another playthrough away. Too many other gripes I have with this game keep popping up in my head, but I'll keep it short for now.
