Skyrim crashing at dragon logo, but it was working fine last night and I have not changed any mods

Recommended Posts

Hello,

The title says it all -- Last night, the game worked fine.

Came to play it today, and it crashes at the dragon logo, as if there were a missing master. I did not change any mods, load any programs like NMM or any patchers, or start the creation kit, or use the launcher, etc. I quit the game, and then started it, and now it won't load.

I have tried everything I can think of to fix the problem, re-ran my skyproc patchers, checked validity of the game cache, and ran TES5edit to look for errors or missing masters (there are none).

I can post my load order if you are sure it is relevant, but I would rather not because it's long and has a lot of esoteric mods and I, an experienced modder, have checked it myself several times.

This problem is completely baffling to me. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Have you checked the game logs?

I don't know if you checked your plug in list but something has happened to me about 5 times. For some reason NMM decides to randomly checks/unchecks a couple of plug-ins causing it to crash. I would try a lot of things and then when I look at every single plug-in I find one activated that I had deactivated because I didn't have the required mods.

I already used TES5edit to look for such plug-in list errors, and there are none. No missing masters, nothing is out of order.

Have you tried rebooting your pc? Sometimes it does wonders.  :P

Yes :P

Search for every log created by the game and take a look at them. On the drive you have your mods and the game, search for: *.log datemodified:<choose today's date>

The Papyrus log above doesn't really tell much, maybe the SKSE logs would. Also, check out this thread.

I tried to follow that guide, but I cannot for the life of me get SKSE to make a crash dump. I made that suggested skse.ini file in data/SKSE and even pasted it to skse/plugins and my games/Skyrim/skse when that didn't work. There's nothing in the crash dump folder after several starts.

I don't have SKSE 1.7.3, but with 1.7.2, there's always a line at the end of the log that tells you something about the crash, when minidumps are enabled, even when you quit the game normally, without any crash.  In your log, there isn't one from what I can tell, even if it says "minidump enabled" at the top. So it's either a SKSE related crash, perhaps it's the SKSE which crashes the game, or SKSE doesn't really enable minidumps.

SKSE isn't giving me any kind of minidumps.

What do you suggest I try?

SKSE.INI should be placed as DATA\SKSE\SKSE.INI and should contain the following.

[Debug]

WriteMinidumps=1

Also, you really shouldn't install your games into "C:\Program Files (x86)\", which often causes problems with writing permissions. Install them into C:\GAMES\ or something like that, e.g. C:\GAMES\SteamApps\common\Skyrim.

You may try adding these as well into SKSE.INI:

[General]

ClearInvalidRegistrations=1

EnableDiagnostics=1

SKSE isn't giving me any kind of minidumps.

What do you suggest I try?

First of all, do you have any other game you can try? Can you run it? Can you run Skyrim via the launcher without mods?

Link to comment

Have you tried starting the game through Steam? Not through your mod manager (using SKSE). This happened to me because of a Skyrim update (SKSE wasn't compatible anymore) but I don't think there was any Skyrim updates for awhile. Might be your SKSE got corrupted.

Also could be one of the mods got corrupted and no longer is working properly. If you still cant get it to work try uninstalling all the mods you have and starting with a clean save/start (wagon etc) no mods, no SKSE.

You do however have some serious work and trouble shooting to get this fixed. Most of the easy fixes have been explored and used already. Now is the hard parts.

I disabled UAC to prevent issues with permissions so I don't have to fret with such problems.

I have SKSE.ini in that very folder, and it contains that exact line. The log even says that minidumps are enabled, yet they do not show up in the crashdump folder at all.

Completely delete and re-install SKSE. You might want to run a disk check on that volume as well.

If these doesn't do any good, then try disabling the SKSE plugins in the skse.log above one by one.

BTW, does the Event Viewer tell anything about these crashes?

(WIN+R then paste this: eventvwr.msc /s)

I hope you are wrong, it would take literally all of my vacation to do that.

Not as complex as you think. The first statement is just to verify if it was a SKSE issue or something else. If it is SKSE (regular game works except the SKSE scripted mods) and you are able to get past the logo then it is some corruption of a mod you have. If it does work in "pure" form without SKSE and gets you past your logo then you have more work to do. Reinstalling a fresh copy of the CURRENT VERSION OF SKSE you have been using is a quick and easy fix. You state you had a perfectly functional game just yesterday and made no changes to the files since using it (I assume yesterday) so there isn't anything that has been altered by you. = corruption. ;).

The adding mods in will be a bit of a pain but you can add as many as 5 or so related mods and fire up the game (from clean uninstalled save at character creation) your problem fortunately is logo related. Once you get past the logo. exit and add 5 more. You already have them in your mod folder just need to reinstall them. When you crash with the logo you know the bad mod. If you get to the end after fresh installations and everything works one of the installed mods went bad and you corrected it with your re-installation. Entire vacation.. doubt it, a day or half a day's work is more like. it. yes this sucks but it does happen. This very thing happened just toward the beginning of this year and I went through about 150 mods in about 4 hours and I had a glitch that caused CTD later in the game. ( I used clean saves from Nexus to get me close to the location I needed to test. )

After that I keep my MO folder backed up frequently. I am willing to waste some considerable hard drive space to be able to reinstall the entire MO folder again in minutes as opposed to 4 yours of trouble shooting.

(keep in mind all this testing will create bad saves which will need to be removed. Any temporary saves or ones you make will need to be clean out when you do get things working. But of course you already know that ;). )

Wish you best of luck

It's a few hours of work when you're using NMM and Mod Organizer. When you have your own (clean) files that you need to preserve and avoid using any kind of mod manager because they cannot understand esoteric mod orders and always screw them up, it becomes a day's work, and I have two days of vacation, one of which I've spent on this. :c

Zerosleepless, I tried that multiple times
