ERP in World of Warcraft

I'm curious about ERP in WoW but because I play the game VERY casually and really only know the basics of Warcraft lore I've always shied away from RP servers.  I've done RP and ERP in the past so I know how it works in general but I'd like to know a bit about ERP in WoW specifically, tips/advice, any helpful or insightful discussion is welcome.  ...and, yes, I already know about Goldshire so you don't have to mention it.  Not sure where the Horde gathers though.

Not sure why you'd shy away from RP servers, especially as a casual. The players on RP server tend to be much more tolerant and understanding than on others, and with the servers now playing nicely with one another it's not a problem to meet up with people you know who aren't on them. Regardless, if you want to RP at all, nevermind ERP, you're going to want to be on either Moon Guard server, Wyrmrest Accord server, or Argent Dawn if you're in EU time zones. You can find RP on other RP servers but it's very sparse. Those three are the big ones. Moon Guard is the elder of the U.S. servers, so there tends to be a higher population there, but WrA usually has people who are more serious about their storylines. Either one of them is fairly good, though, so it's up to you. I don't know much about Argent Dawn but it's got a decent reputation.

As for where people tend to RP, the big places for meet ups / walk up RP is usually Stormwind for Allies and Silvermoon City for Horde. There are other areas where RPers gather, but those two cities are the biggest hubs. Most people will meet one another there, find contacts, then go wherever their stories lead them later. Gold(Porn)shire is a phenomenon that occurs mostly on Moon Guard and it's... not a great place to meet RPers. Tends to be a lot of trolls there, a lot of G.I.R.L.s looking to scam gold, and a lot of gawkers come to stare at the freak show. It's worth looking at once for the novelty but you're not likely to find good (E)RP there.

As for how to get into it, best advice I can give you is to get one of the RP addons for WoW, either My RolePlay or Total RP 3. There's a cold war going on about which is the better mod but it seems to be mostly a matter of personal taste. I've tried them both and they're both good in their own way. Get one of those two and make yourself a profile, even just a basic one. After you have it you'll be able to click on another player and, if they RP and have a RP addon, you'll be able to read their description and background. Sometimes if people ERP it'll say so right in their profile. After that, it's a matter of finding good people to hang out with. There's websites out there where you can read, reply to, and post your own ads if you're looking for ERP. I haven't personally used them since I prefer ERP to be a possible product of long term storylines, not the entire reason for RPing, but they're out there if you're interested.

As for lore, having a basic knowledge of the races, where they come from, what the basic politics of the world are, etc... is usually enough for most RPers. If you've played the game and paid attention to the story and quests, you should be fine. For anything more, there's always wiki. There definitely are some lore nazis RPing who will be argumentative and pushy, but most people are tolerant so long as you don't suck at telling a story and you're not RPing some perfect Mary Sue, invulnerable character like the half-dragon son of Jaina and Arthas from another dimension or some crap. Don't let it intimidate you, just learn as you go.
