Qarl's Texture Pack and Stability Issues

I recently stumbled across this and have tried both versions (Qarl's original version and the omod version from TESNexus). While both work (and look and look amazing!) they have made Oblivion very unstable.

 

First off I had to re-install Unique Landscapes and Better Cities after installing the texture pack or the game would crash everything I tried to leave the Anvil Docks or the cell just outside the Imperial City Talos Gate (would crash when fast traveling or manually walking out of the cell).

 

However the game is still quite unstable. More often than not fast traveling causes the game to crash. And in addition, the game crashes every 5 minutes or so no matter what I am doing.

 

My computer hardware is up to date and should not be part of the problem - I am running 16 gigs of ram (with the ram booster for oblivion) and a TI 560 2GB RAM video card.

Oh, If I have to pick between the 2 - UL is staying

 

I have been playing around with Archive Invalidation settings in OBMM and I think I have improved the stability a bit - I will have to find out later tonight when I play.

My computer isn't nearly as good as yours, but doesn't crash with more mods than you have (some of them compressed) and QTP3 installed (and various other retexture mods).

 

If that's where you got your download from, try to redownload, reinstall and see if CTDs continue. If they do, you either have a performance problem (unlikely) or it's a conflict... And I'm not sure what would conflict with QTP3 (as it only adds textures).

Well, I've encountered the same problem as erc1971 - thanks for the link, I'll try that version of QTP3.

I tried to use QTP, Better Cities and UL at the same time and the game just couldn't let me leave the cities, crashing everywhere outside them

I do use Better Cities (set on closed) and OOO. I do not currently use UL as it just was too incompatible with stuff. Seemed I need a patch for this and a patch for that until I just gave up and said the heck with it.

Unique landscapes is far too unstable with so many mods. I don't recommend using it with the number of mods you have.

Question, have you cleaned some of those mods with tes4edit? Also I see some missing mods, like unofficial DLC patches, Better Cities and Unique Landscapes patches. Since you are now increasing the size of textures to be loaded by the game you will need to adjust your oblivion.ini file to accommodate; using a memory manager like OSR might help in that cause as well. Lastly I would recommend using wyre bash to ensure all those mods work in harmony.

Line 182 to 186 of that pastebin link I originally wrote. But those are just from a quick glance of your load order. Perhaps there are more for your specific load order. Please type in google "oblivion Unique Landscapes patches" or something similar with your preferred key words. Results should point to the many patches according to load list. You are running to the highly modified Oblivion game player now; as such you will need to learn Wrye bash. This will allow you to overcome conflicts of mods, remove or prevent certain features from being overwritten, and a whole host of other things. http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/22368

 

The Ram booster thing your stated makes your game run up to 4g now. But there are still problems with the default memory hashing of oblivion since you now use soo many mods and textures. I would try http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/23208 if crashing persists after mod cleaning, boss re order, and bash patched.

Please save and make backup ini file before making changes. The some tweaks on that link can be harmful. So please read and experiment. Make only one or few changes , play game and test, repeat.

 

Summary:

1. download missing mods patches

2. clean mods with tes4edit

3. fix new load order

4. play new game. test.

5 content? stop. not happy? con't

6. install wrye bash make bash patch.

7. play test. content? stop. not happy? con't

8. make ini tweaks and install OSR

9 play test. etc

Looks like I am going to busy for a while. Thanks for all the tutorial links - I had installed TES4Edit and was kind of clueless what to do with it.

 

I will get back to you down the road after playing with all that stuff.
