Aurlyn Dawnstone, the Reclusive Philosopher

"I am Aurlyn. I have walked Tamriel for years uncounted, seeing nothing but violence and blood."

"Perhaps it is time I take a more active role in shaping the world. If our destiny is to keep evil forever at bay, then so be it."

Description

Aurlyn is an Aldmer Dawn Sorceress from times long past, seeking peace and redemption in a world gone mad.

Custom voiced with well over a thousand lines of dialogue, Aurlyn is designed as a game-long companion, as well as a tragic hero, on her own quest to seek a lost ideal, and unravel the mysteries of her ancient past. She combines my dramatic writing style with a deluge of interesting topics and conversations, making her a truly memorable character that will walk beside you as you fulfill the prophecies of the Elder Scrolls, and reshape Tamriel.

Aurlyn possesses a rich and unique backstory, advanced commentary on most notable locations, a fully-fledged array of relationship dialogue that reflects your actions, and dynamic reactions to the choices you make throughout the game, from completing grand questlines to helping paupers. Many of her conversations are unlocked as you travel through Tamriel, so talk to her in as many places as possible.

A true philosopher at heart, Aurlyn will often make deep and insightful observations of the natural world, and enjoys playing a game of riddles almost as much as reading and quiet contemplation. She will be more than happy to share her knowledge with you, providing unique books and spell tomes once a day.

Backstory

Her past is more varied and tenuous than you might think. Aurlyn's first memory was waking up in an Aldmeri ship, sailing through seas of bitter cold. All the other passengers were grievously wounded, and the navigator refused to speak. Through stores of books under the ship's deck, she learned she was in the Early Merethic Era. Pursued by House Direnni as soon as her ship reached port, Aurlyn has been trying to learn why she was on that ill-fated voyage ever since.

To that effect, she has spent centuries sequestered in the Crystal Tower, operated an infernal machine far below the forests of Valenwood, dueled a Telvanni Wizard for an Elder Scroll, and finally sought refuge with the Greybeards, high upon the slopes of the Throat of the World.

There she remains, seeking inner peace through meditation, contemplation and worship of the gods. Yet when the thundering call heralded the arrival of a new Dragonborn, Aurlyn is eager to once again take an active role in shaping the world, and patiently awaits your arrival at High Hrothgar.

Oh, and no, she is not a vampire. She's lived that long for a reason, which is hinted at when asking about her past, and becomes apparent during her upcoming personal quest.

Combat, Stats and Perks

Aurlyn is devastating in ranged combat, using a variant of Sun Fire and Vampire's Bane that is capable of harming any opponent. She has a wide variety of perks appropriate for an ancient Dawn Sorceress, including Atronach, Stability and Ward Absorb. Aurlyn will switch to a melee weapon at close range, and is quite adept with one-handed weapons.

She grants two perks while actively following you:

First Light, which increases magicka by 100 points.

Fires of Dawn, which increases Frost Resistance by 50%.

Aurlyn starts off at level 15, and will level with the Player all the way up to level 80. She's a master at Destruction, Restoration, One-Handed and Heavy Armor, and is also quite adept at Alteration. Aurlyn also provides master-level Destruction training, and sells a wide variety of spells and tomes.

Aurlyn runs on her own custom follower system, making her fully compatible with all follower management mods and other custom-voiced companions. She comes with a new summoning spell, Clarion Call, which will call her to your side while she's actively following you.

Aurlyn will still work with Hearthfire on a dialogue front, but she will not move to a home. Sorry guys, we really are! If anyone figures out a workaround, please let us know!

FAQ

Q: "I can't find Aurlyn, where is she?"

A: Aurlyn is found in High Hrothgar, if not inside, she can be found meditating outside for 8 hours a day on top of the tower.

Q: "Aurlyn isn't following me!"

A: If you are using EFF or AFT or any follower mod, make sure Aurlyn's .esp file is below your chosen follower mod in the load order. This will then allow her to follow you.

Q: "Can you make her more pretty?"

A: Beauty is subjective, and everyone has their own interpretation. If you're not a fan of Aurlyn's vanilla appearance, then there is an optional file which changes her features. She will also look different if you are using any beautification mods such as XCE Character Enhancement or Ethereal Elven Overhaul.

Mlee3141 has recently given his permission for anyone to change Aurlyn's appearance and upload the files, as long as proper credit is given (and ideally, has a link back to the original page!)

"Consider this a formal and irrevocable declaration that from this moment on, everyone is free to use, modify, upload and change Aurlyn's appearance as they see fit, as long as proper credits are given." - mlee3141

Q: "Her teeth are purple!"

A: This is due to messed up filepaths when the mod was being made. This has been fixed in the newest update, please re-download if you haven't already.

Q: "Can I marry her?"

A: Yes you can! Just complete "The Bonds of Matrimony" by talking to Maramal in Riften, and Aurlyn will recognise the Amulet of Mara.

Yup. She's now up on Lover's Lab, with a download mirror to her page on Epoch Sanctum since I can't upload files larger than 100mb here, and the Nexus just banned me for completely unfair and hypocritical reasons. Her mod page is now hidden there by Darkrogue21 on my behalf, and will remain that way until the Nexus admits their mistakes, and unbans me.

Now then, let's move onwards. This won't set me back a bit; I'll still continue modding and releasing my mods on independent websites whenever I feel like it. Oh, and I would extend a sincere Thank You to all of my team members for being so understanding and supportive; you're the best.

Also, feel free to post any comments, questions, feedback and suggestions below. Thanks!

Nice to see that the "fair and unbiased" admins at Nexus Mods decided to post everything BUT their own less-than-ideal responses. Like, "What makes you think your opinions are needed?", "We're too busy, and don't have time for this.", and "Our team wanted me to warn you, and make sure you stay out of trouble" (or something along these lines; can't remember, but the point is, they were prejudged even before I started giving them my honest feedback; got that message before that entire chat log happened.) Take a look at their so-called "transcript" here:

Thank you for continuing your work on LL and other sites, despite what happened. From the transcript that was posted, this seems like an injustice and a completely unreasonable ban, even by Nexus rules.

Aurlyn is pretty much one of the only followers that I am willing to use other than vanilla, along with those few others like Vilja (who gets annoying), Arissa (who has too short of a quest) and Inigo (who's a freaky cat guy, though I still like him) and Anna's NPCs (which is odd with a dozen characters voiced by the same voice actor, but I still enjoy it). I don't download blank slate barbie types unless it's to just rip their facegen or the like, but I love me some well done immersive follower with a story and seeming personality of their own, rather than essentially a pretty drone to carry my stuff, like 99 % of the Nexus followers are.

By the way the Nexus version of Aurlyn is still visible rather than hidden, despite you as far as I can tell still being banned.

I bear the Nexus no spite anymore since I'm, by nature, not a vindictive person. Thus, I had Darkrogue unhide Aurlyn there to resolve an internal conflict when I let Druun upload Virelda there, in the most logical way possible.

I think most every mod should be compatible, but if you use any follower overhauls like AFT or EFF, then be sure to load Aurlyn below those. I'm afraid I'm against the core philisophy of STEP, and don't use Sexlab, so I cannot help you with those two mods/ mod lists.

Also, my attention is focused on Evermore and A House Divided these days; being developed at Epoch Sanctum, so I apologize for any late responses in these threads. Thanks!

Changed my mind. I had Druun delete both Aurlyn and Virelda on the Nexus because they caught my second account there, and gave me an IP ban. Evermore and A House Divided will no longer be released on the Nexus either. Thanks!

Also Aurlyn, Virelda, Evermore and A House Divided shall never be uploaded on the Nexus, by anyone, under any circumstances.

A huge thanks to selenameeka for writing this general troubleshooting guide, and giving me permission to pin it/ post it here.

If You’re having trouble with a follower such as Aurlyn, Virelda, or any other Custom Follower, please read below before asking questions. This will allow you to go through a checklist of help so hopefully the problem can be solved quickly, and it will also tell you what we need to better assess the situation you are having. All mod orders are different and troubles mean less play time for you. We want to make sure the issue gets resolved as quickly as possible!

Menu: First Issue: Overhaul Mods Second Issue: Dialogue Options Third Issue: Animation Options Fourth Issue: Safe Modding Fifth: When All Else Fails

First issue: Follower Overhaul Mods Overhaul mod: Any mod that overhauls part or all of a follower, region, or the player character. Some popular follower overhauls:

UFO - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/14037/?

AFT - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/15524/?

EFF - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/12933/?

Retexture mods (new hairs, different faces) have little impact on the follower UNLESS they change vanilla IDs. This is usually just a bad edit and can normally be fixed. If your retexture mod isn’t working, ask us directly and give us your load order. Also, completely uninstalling the mod and reinstalling it or reinstalling it over the corrupted part might work.

NON-Overhaul Mods: If you have no mods like these then place the Custom Follower near the bottom of your load order. He/She doesn't have to be last as there are other mods that should take that spot, but having them down in the load order allows them to be loaded after some other mods that could possibly be causing a conflict. Loot and BOSS sometimes puts followers up high on the list. This doesn't always allow them to work properly, especially depending on your load order. It's safer to put them nearer the bottom. If you've done this and it’s still not working, skip the next paragraph and go on below.

Overhaul Mods: If you DO have mods like these, which is normal, place the Custom Follower BELOW that mod. I have found that most of the time for me it doesn’t matter if the Custom Follower is above or below the overhaul unless their are other mods that could cause a conflict. If another mod conflicts, I move the follower below the overhaul and it usually works. If you’ve done this and it’s still not working, go on below.

Second Issue: Dialogue Options Does the follower give you any dialogue at all, or are you simply missing the dialogue options to follow? Some followers require you to “chat with them” before they will give you the option to ask for them to follow you. Aurlyn, Serenity, and Virelda all require this. Their dialogue options are also not typical; they don’t say “Follow me, I need your help” or something generic like that. But it is very clear what the wording is asking the follower to do. You just have to explore their dialogue a little first. Also remember that new dialogue options light up. Some light up on the first menu with new choices, sometimes you have to click an already used choice (it’s dim) to get to a new answer. If you have exhausted this, go on below to the fourth option.

If you’re missing dialogue, put the Custom Follower below any follower overhaul mods, especially ones that edit dialogue (like EFF). This should fix the problem but also allow the follower to be managed by the overhaul. Not helping? Go to option five.

Third Issue: Animation Options Do you have a custom skeleton installed with custom animations? Most should work just fine, so long as the MCM menus and the FNIS generator have been configured properly and are running. But if there are problems, these two choices might help you.

FNIS Generator:

This video contains everything you need to know about getting it set up and subsequent patching. If you have no animations and everyone looks like T’s, this is probably your issue. Either something isn’t set right or you didn’t update the patch when necessary.

MCM Menu: This is basically custom to every mod user, so I'll just go over the basics here. This is for if the animations you have are loaded properly but not displaying. Go into your MCM menu and open up your skeleton’s tab. Inside there will be another link to the animations. Click on that and in each section choose what animation you want. MAKE SURE TO APPLY IT TO NPCS! There is a separate NPC box and subsequent choices for them (same choices as yours, but they do not have to use your choices you’ve applied to your player character). You might need some testing to see all the animations if you have a lot of choices. Once satisfied save and go back to your game. The animations should work immediately.

If you’ve done these two and it doesn’t work, skip to the bottom and give us a copy of your load order along with all animation files you are using.

Fourth Issue: Safe Modding

Are you using both Wrye Bash and TESVEdit to patch? It's a long shot, but there could be another conflict going on and it's just messing up other things.

Video on TESVEdit Patching:

Video on Wrye Bash Patching:

If you do these already in the proper order then disregard this and go below.

Fifth: Fifth: When All Else Fails

If it still isn't working, and I hope it is working for you now, go ahead and send a copy of your load order. One of us can possibly look at the other mods and see if there are conflicts and get back with you. Also leave any questions you have with it. We will get this figured out!

Thanks for making this. I've gone through about 8 different fully voiced follower mods including this one and am starting a new game and this is one of the two I've decided to keep (the other is Sofia for the curious). I was wondering if she cared about things like you joining the thieves guild and dark brotherhood. I probably wont do the dark brotherhood in this play through, but would like to do thieves guild stuff at some point.
