Mod or game: That is the question

Hi all,

There are many games out there and some of them have adult content. Some even have toolset to add/change content - that's where modders come in - they create incredible things: add outfits, change gameplay in some ways, reshape vanilla meshes etc.etc. You know, what I am talking about.

BUT...but you can't go against game mechanics, add new features, that go against game rules etc. For example whatever you do, you can't create high quality cinematic scenes even in Skyrim, saying nothing about Oblivion, Fallout and older games.

Sometimes it is too hard to add animation to game, or even add meshes, change texture etc, (as in DA abominable tool set) - so, there exist very few modifications for such games, in consequence.

In any case, if you are looking high level cut-scenes, interactions etc. in games, you might end frustrated - textures (even meshes, sometimes) flickering, jerky motion etc.etc. This is by no means a reproach to modders - they do their best. Unfortunately they are limited by game mechanic. Those games were not created with adult content in mind, or movie quality cinematic requirements. That is why some machinima artists extract models from game and render movies in 3rd party software. But movies are not interactive, are they?

So whats the point? I wander, is it possible to make another step: use another 3d engine along with game assets create missing part? Of course, you can not recreate the whole game - it is impossible, but you could create a part and add what features you consider missing from the original.

Nowadays, there are many potent and easy to use 3d engines out there (UDK, Unity, you say it). A small group of developers could do incredible things, that are never possible in original game, due to engine limitations, game mechanic inadequacy etc. So, I am talking about new level of modification - mods that run as entirely separate applications.

What you think about this?
