I'm surprised no one has posted.  I backed 'POE' on kickstarter and got my digital copy on release day, with a physical copy coming soon (hopefully).  I have been greatly enjoying the game despite some difficult battles, also the no combat experience takes getting used to.  But all in all the game is bug free (at least for me) and reminds me greatly of Planescape: Torment (my favorite rpg of all time.)  I think 'POE' greatly does justice to the old IE games.  What I like about this game more is no D&D rules, so no hours of research looking at pre-made characters.  The game is pretty much pick up and play no trap builds here.  The graphics are beautiful for this type of game.  The game has some voice overs but it's mostly it's dialogue which I love.  Some classes have sub classes like the Paladin (my current class).  Just one tip: Keep an eye on your companions health, if they lose all of it they die permanently.

Tried patched pillars of eternity, loading times are shorter and my save may be bloated but there is something fundamentally wrong with the way this game handles loading screens, I had to go inside some dormitory just to speak to a dude and immediately head outside since I had already explored the building and that whole process took me almost a minute, half of which was staring at the loading screen, there was also a time that to get to a key I had to outside-loading-cave-loading-hedge on the outside-loading-cave-loading-outside, there is simply no excuse for that, granted there may be dungeon diving in between loading screens but what happens when there isn't ,when you are simply walking around town speaking with NPCs checking if you've missed something?

I think PoE as some very bad loading issues, they are being addressed so it will probably be alright but I still don't think there's a reason to have a 4x4m² room as a loading screen. Anyway don't buy obsidian games on day 1 no matter how popular.

Besides that I think it's a great game up there with baldur's not as good as torment but that's a tall order.

Well I finished it as well. For 25 bucks since I kickstarted it, its AMAZING! If I paid 50 bucks for it though I would be disappointed.

Pro

  • Feels oldschool, that has pluses and minuses. Graphical style feels archaic, but the tactical difficulty is great. Huge nostalgia!
  • Companions get pretty well fleshed out if you do companion quests. Wish there was more party banter, it is pretty sparse...
  • Good mechanics. Endurance and health means you don't have to stop and rest after EVERY combat like in Baldur's Gate (partially ruined by camping supplies though). Most damage goes to endurance, which gets reset between encounters. Really good mechanics! (minus camping supplies to heal health)
  • I enjoyed most of the classes leveling mechanics, chanter is fucking AMAZING total MVP!
  • Expert mode is great. If you want a real challenge you can select this mode and it makes you use some optional rules, like not seeing exactly how big your AoE are, so you have to be very careful not to drop AoE's on your party members. Some people will hate it, but I actually LOVE IT!
  • Ability to hire non storyline companions, you then get to create the companion of any class and assign traits and class abilities of your liking. Don't like an NPC or one dies you can replace them...
  • Had a good ending, where your choices in the game are shown to have effects in the world.

Con

  • Feels rushed at places. No romances to save time, though they make perfect sense for a few characters. The last act feels like you are just doing quests rather than interacting with the world. Your background you choose is pretty much worthless, except for ONE conversation.
  • Odd mechanics choices, Camping equipment... WTF!!! Forces people to run back into town to get camping supplies. ONLY 2 camping equipment at a time as well? The disincentive with camping supplies failed, and just annoyed people. Should have only allowed camping on a clear map and it costs no supplies, but then tailor each map so you can clear it without sleeping in between fights? That might suck too, but I just know the two camping tents sucked...
  • Ranger seems a really weak class, the pet is a total joke.
  • Inconsistent usage of voice acting, some spoken dialogue is voiced, which some spoken dialogue isn't , and that can change in the SAME CONVERSATION! Totally inconstant. Really bothers me!
  • Very limited customization of character looks. It's BAD!!!
  • I also wish they went with a graphics style of Dragon Age because the characters remind me pixel art since they are so small and undetailed. The meshes they use for the armor are so fucking embarrassing simple, and the textures are small, I could do better!

I will be honest, as a 25 dollar game it is amazing, but if i was paying full price then I would have been disappointed.

They stated that there would be no romances in the kickstarter.  Camping equipment is meant to make it so you 'can't' rest after every encounter and snowball through everything.  There was supposed to be a similar mechanic in the original BG/IWD games.  There's already mods to remove it though.

The voices are consistent.  It's similar to what was done back in ye olde infinity engine days, and this is something that a lot of people enjoyed.  If you didn't grow up with those games, it wouldn't be something you liked though.  They also went with said design because 2.5D is what people wanted.  Also if you can do better, feel free to do so.  I'm sure plenty of people would be happy to see your art work.

WEll, each has his/her own preferences and taste it seems...

I'd rather have NO romances than bad/forced romances with NPCs I simply don't like - in BG2 my female char was stuck romancing Annoying Anomen...in Dragon Age 2 was not a single likeable char for my female to romance...and in Inquisition only ONE that isn't even a playable NPC...so yeah, rather none then bad/uninteresting ones

Camping equipment is much better then simply denying your from sleeping in dungeons, which would have been the other alternative. As already said, you shouldn't sleep after every little skirmish, but instead make more "tactical rests". It also gives a nice retro-feeling to a real P&P-RPG. In most fantasy-novels supplies/food etc are always a main concern of the questing-party, so I really like it

Ranger's pets are very useful for me, to buy myself time by binding enemies for a while. They are no tanks, but can occupy foes. and rush in rooms to trigger fights and other things. Still much better than having no pet-companion, like ranger's in D&D, now they were rather useless compared to other classes ^^

Voice-acting didn't bother me at all, I could have don without any dialogue being voiced...

And yeah, wish the graphics were like Dragon Age as well ... of course Obsidian could never have reeased the game then in the first place, not with so much actual content and without a huge publisher and budget in the background... :dodgy:

Overall, I don't see much reason to complain. PoE is finally the first Oldschool-RPG-Revival Game that is fun to play for me unlike Divinity (uninteresting world/lore, forced humour, few and boring companions, cool battles though) or Wasteland 2 (a bit of a drag and really tiresome battles towards the end...). I hope it becomes a franchise and the world will be used more by Obsidian in the future of their company!

I count this as a Pro, if you want "romance" you can go to the Salty Mast.  Or you can watch porn and LARP yourself into the role of a Pizza Delivery guy, both are better than the hackneyed "romance" that gets written into games to pander to the BioWare crowd.

I really enjoyed it.  My first passthrough I felt like it could have been just a slightly bit better to hit the mmmmmmm sweet spot.  But then the second playthrough felt like it grew on me even better like fine wine.  You want to take a step back and read to get the full immersion.  I kinda rushed through on the first try, skimming text rather than slowing down to enjoy it.
