Guards are naked with underwear, guard armor is in their inventory

Recommended Posts

Hey, I have a modded Skyrim SE install, and fucked it up last year because of the update. Now, I've done a full reassembly of the modlist on a fresh install and it runs just fine and all, but my only bug now is that all the city guards are naked with underwear. They wear their boots and helmets but are practically naked beside from that.

What do I do? I have tried disabling some mods but nothing changed.

You say the armor is in their inventory, but how did you find this out?

  1. Open the console.
  2. Select a naked guard.
  3. "inv"
  4. What does the output say about the armor? Is it marked as "worn"?

If its marked as worn and yet the guard armor is invisible then inspect the following items for mods changing them:

  1. Open the console.
  2. Select a naked guard.
  3. Note down the form id of said guard.
  4. Open xEdit, load your load order as-is, do not change the selection.
  5. Locate the guard (most likely a ACHR record).
  6. Locate the base NPC_ record, unless you already found it in the previous step ("NAME - Base" in xEdit).
  7. Locate the associated outfit (DOFT) record.
  8. (optional) Go through each listed ARMO record, and their ARMA records to get associated mesh file names. These can be inspected in NifSkope, however I do not believe this to be relevant at this point.
  9. Go back to the NPC_ record.
  10. Locate the Items array.

I did that command earlier, and it showed that the armor wasn't marked as worn. I observed this to be the case for all the Whiterun guards.

I'm going to guess then that the issue is that the armor outfit conflicts with the underwear in equipment slots, and the NPC ai determined that the underwear is the better option for protection. And before you ask, no, as far as I know the AI logic for which armor is best never made much sense.

That's a roundabout way of saying your issue might be in the mod providing the underwear. SOS?

Also, you can try forcing the npc to requip the armor to see what happens.

remodelled armour https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/22168 as the suspect

  • Equippable Underwear for NPCs is an example of a mod that uses slot 54 and may cause issues.  In my testing, it worked fine if I disabled Dynamic Armor Variants despite it being a hard requirement for Equippable Underwear. Patches for Equippable Underwear and ModiLogist Underwear (more underwear options) are available under Optional Files if you experience Armor and Clothing disappearing in game.
