Nortrud is one of the most degenerate, misogynistic, and patriarchal societies I have ever come across. They are utterly obsessed with procreation and war to the extent that it has directly shaped most of their laws and social structures down to even their religious beliefs.

 

The men exercise full control over all domestic and public matters even though they only comprise a small portion of the overall population, and there are no women in positions of high authority outside of the military. Curiously, the men delegate all matters of warfare to be conducted by their women, even the fighting itself and the tactical dimensions of how a battle is to be fought.

 

This is quite strange, for all women in these countries are in some sense seen as slaves by the general population. Both the men and women alike treat women the same way we would treat a slave, and they do so with all women regardless of race, socioeconomic standing, or parentage. In fact, this even applies to military commanders and the common soldiery. That said, unlike slaves in other societies, including our own, the Lishaari women are not in any way restrained or branded because they fully accept their place within the society at large. Only some of the more unruly Lishaari women actually get restrained, and only if they misbehave.

 

Non-Lishaari women tend to get it a lot worse than their native counterparts as they are usually restrained at all times and are often brutally abused by their masters. Thankfully, they are few and far between, so I've been spared the misery of witnessing this abuse first hand, but I've heard many stories of what it may entail. It is not a pretty sight.

 

Families here are entirely centered around a man and his firstborn son. Together, they constitute the masters of a large harem of women who often outnumber the men by a factor of between three and fifteen. As I understand it, their species need these harems just in order to survive because their women are unlikely to conceive sons unless it is done with a blood relative. This has led them to develop an abhorrent custom whereby the men lie with their own mothers, aunts, and sisters when they want more sons while doing the same with non-blood-related concubines when they want more daughters.

 

In connection to this, the natives often say that a man is not a true man unless he has his own home and harem, so the local king recently provided me a house as well as two Lishaari women to serve me for the time that I remain here.

 

The two women dot on me constantly, and regularly ask me how they can best serve my interests. I would never profess any love of their kind, but I must admit that I often use these Lishaari for my own pleasure, especially in the absence of my beloved wife. With good physiques and womanly figures, they know how to serve that purpose quite well, though in all honesty, their minds interest me far more than their bodies.

 

I often have them sit with me at night to discuss aspects of their culture, and in this they have been quite willing to indulge. You would be surprised how much I have been able to learn about this strange culture through these two women alone.

 

One shocking oddity which I learned about upon our first meeting is that both men and women strip bare when they enter the home. I must admit that I was quite taken the first time the women stripped me naked, but it is something you simply have to get used to. Thankfully, their customs dictate that you must be dressed when in the company of outsiders, even if it is within the confines of your own home, so it is far more manageable than you might expect.

 

As amenities go, there is a vast gap between the men and the women, with the former typically sleeping in lofty, highly decorated rooms containing all of their belongings and a massive bed, while the latter usually sleep together on the floor in a small, barren room with few basic facilities.

 

In the course of a day, the women spend most of their time housekeeping, training for war, or acting as the men's personal bodyguards, whereas the men spend most of their time on politics or training to compete in personal duels with other men. When a man is defeated by another man in a formalized duel, he is given the right to take a third of the other man's fortune and women as his reward, and a few harems have grown immensely large through this practice, with the largest recorded reaching a size of two men and 2536 women in all.

 

Most states in Nortrud only have small standing peacetime armies, so when war seems likely, they usually take the precautionary measure of conscripting a large portion of their civilian female population into the military. When hostilities do break out, they quickly assemble these women into larger armies which are then sent out to fight in large, pitched battles, often with high casualty numbers, until one side is victorious. Most wars here only last a few weeks and they are usually decided in the course of one or two battles, but longer campaigns do happen from time to time. Unlike some of the unceremonious killing that you get in our part of the world, there is a lot of pomp and circumstance to their battles, with ceremonial rites, threatening displays, and loud war cries shouted in unison.

 

It would seem that things have not always been like this in Nortrud. There are accounts by other scholars who wrote from the region in the distant past, and these usually speak of a much more peaceful, egalitarian, and non-discriminatory society with a strong matriarchal leaning. It seems that even their religion may have been dominated by female deities. When and how the Lishaari transitioned is sadly lost to history as there are no surviving accounts of the events anywhere to be found, but it is believed to have been a quite violent period in the region's history.

 

In southern Alenrud and most of Lisshai, the Lishaari now emulate the cultures of the humans around them. Most of them practice other religious faiths and they are almost universally monogamous. Moreover, they are of higher moral character than their Nortrud counterparts, and they interact more with the outside world. A curious thing is that these populations seem to have experienced a massive decline in population since they abandoned their old incestuous customs and traditional family beliefs, so this seems to validate the claims made by the Lishaari here in Nortrud regarding the need for inbreeding.

 

In a word, to sum up my feelings on this matter, I personally find the Lishaari quite interesting. They have a very bizarre, yet interesting culture, though I see few ways in which it might be beneficial to adopt aspects of their culture into our own.

 

I hope that this record of my findings from my time here will prove useful to future generations, even beyond the time of my demise, whenever it may come.

The house and its name are a sacred institution. By the gods' word, it is to be ruled by a man and his first male offspring until such a time that it may be passed onto the son and his own firstborn. It has endured throughout our history and is a pillar of our culture.

 

A man is commanded to follow his calling, but he must do so as best befits his own standing. His first duty is to guide his household and to ensure the survival of his kin and country. To this end, he shall refrain from fighting whenever possible, but must likewise be ready to defend his personal and house honor when faced with a challenge. He must thusly train himself, and for the sake of his country, procreate with relative and stranger alike, and keep those in his household within the gods' graces. Any man of good standing with sons and daughters to spare should also be willing to equip his kingdom with daughters during times of war, and to marry off sons and daughters alike to households in need during times of peace.

 

A woman is commanded to find her own happiness, but she must do so while strictly abiding the word of her house master. Her first duty should always be the well-being and pleasure of her man and firstborn son, but she should also strive to comfort and uphold the well-being of all less fortunate within the kingdom. In life, she should find contentment in her role as mother and her adherence to the household. As commanded by the gods, she should be entitled to a good education and allowed to share in her man's wealth, and to keep unto her own person those things she has come by by her own strength alone. The gods also grant her freedom to travel as she sees fit and she shall not be prohibited from partaking in that which her heart desires if it is not to the detriment of her man or household. Though she is free, the gods also command her to serve her household faithfully in war and to fight on her man's behalf. She must thus train in the use of weaponry, and she should do no such thing as would bring her house dishonor.

 

A son is commanded to take after his father's teachings and to see that he lives in comfort befitting of his standing. He must ensure that unruly members of the household resubmit to his father's will, and he may do so by any means that do not inflict serious harm. He must also learn the correct etiquette and how to command his own household. To this end, it is both the duty of his mother and his father to educate him properly in line with our gods' teachings.

 

A daughter is commanded to take after her mother's example. Thus, she must ensure the happiness and safety of the household, even when it may displease her, and she must learn how to fight like a soldier. If called upon, she must be ready to answer the call, and should she wish to join the military during times of peace, it is in the interest of good men to allow her to do so. As a future mother, she should also be instructed in the raising of children and how to best pleasure a future husband.

Spoiler

The Ritts are quite simple. They dress plainly, live simple, and speak in a straightforward fashion. They enjoy the small things in life and have an enviable sense of contentment to them. Subsequently, they have shown no interest in our ways or our politics, and neither did they at any point ever express any curiosity about the war. If King Kleipnefrakri's intent truly is to recruit these creatures for the upcoming campaign, I wish him good luck in finding them a motivation to fight for his cause.

 

More than anything, they seem rather preoccupied with their local village affairs and simply put, their own sustenance. They also seem to care a great deal about their families, and they put a lot of emphasis on honesty and loyalty. I don't think they are a lost cause, for this loyalty could prove valuable if placed in the right hands.

 

The ones I've met here aren't particularly well-mannered and their speech is fairly uncultured, but the ones I've met in my hometown have been fairly well-spoken, so this rudeness seems to come from their upbringing. After all, it's not like the commonfolk speak the same as us city dwellers, do they, so why would it be any different with these creatures?

 

As for the purpose of war, the men may be of short stature, but they do possess a physique suitable for the king's purposes. The women, on the other hand, are fairly weak and possess no strong physical character, so I'd personally deem it unwise to consider them potential candidates for recruitment.
