[Solved] CTD on shotguns or close burst weapons

[Solved] - See post #15. CBP is the issue, the latest version causes CTD on various weapons. Downgrade to a previous version

 

Started getting a problem in my game, starts occurring late in the game, probably around the 20 hr mark and beyond. Weapons like Shotguns, both sawed off and combat version, and also weapons like the Tesla Rifle with its charged shotgun variant cause a occasional CTD seconds after being fired. Like the last thing I hear is the boom of the gun and then CTD. Its also not all the time, but happens I'd say... 2-3 out of 10 fights using one. I've gotten to the point of no longer carrying one around, but in the fights when an enemy has one it can get chancey.

 

Curious if anyone else has noticed this issue, did a few google searchs for Shotgun CTD and didn't see much. I'm kinda thinking its save game bloat, I mean my game is pushing 48+ hours in its save file, however problem did begin after installing AAF mods as my previous game was well over 50+ hours and not a single combat CTD. Will be enabling Papyrus for tonight and hopefully can get an idea on what caused it.

You may want to post some of the mods you are using related to weapons.  Are you using something like Weaponsmith Extended?  I have never seen an issue with CTD using weapon mods.  I know first time for everything and not of much help.  I guess I would start disabling any mod you last added dealing with weapons or some kind of war fare.

See the mod list, I barely have any mods for weapons, and these are all Vanilla weapons, in fact I believe I have none, at least none I recall downloading. Finally had a crash related to my hunch. Random world Settler had a Double barrel Shotgun. Last 5 minutes of the log posted in Spoiler.

Last few lines, Akasingerquest is related to the mod Singing Settler, and [LenARM} is related to a radiation mod that increases body size when taking in RADS. I've had Singing Settler for ages and its never caused a crash, but number 138 on my mod List  LenA_RadMorphing.esp is indeed new.

Ok not going to be able to point out exactly what is going on with weapons and CTD.  May not be related to weapons at all.

 

What I can say is you may want to read the guide on this site about AAF installation.  It is the top item listed under AAF in the forums.  Ensure you have installed what is recommended there.  It does say to not use ZaZout due to outdated skse scripts.  I also did not see ZaZ Skeleton in your mod list.  It is a requirement with AAF.  You can use CBBE or Fusion bodies but you must have the Skeleton.

 

Most of your mods seem to be armor/clothing mods.  You can merge those with Merge Plugins or ZEdit (Successor to Merge Plugins but in Alpha).  Probably not source of your issue but it will make your game run better.  The Fortaleza Armor mod sticks out because it uses a lot of plugins that can easily be merged.

 

Longer power lines 3x and DD_Khassar_De_Templari can be replaced by GCM and/or Cheat Terminal.  You already have GCM.  Go into MCM/GCM and look under workshops.  The power line length is already there.

 

Cheat terminal will increase the settlement build level.  You don't need to "cheat" to use it.  It actually more like GCM.  A utility mod that enhances or customizes the game.  These two mods together replace a lot a separate mods people are using in the game.  

 

 

 

Back on subject.  I use Mod Organizer.  Not sure what you are using.  Anytime I have issues like this I think back to what did I last install and uninstall it for the time being.  You can either uninstall one by one until the game is fixed or uninstall all and click on a few at a time.  You may want to start a new "temporary" character if you do the latter.  You can use your current save again most likely when you discover what mod is causing the issue.  

 

Another thought.  Sometimes you need to "Nuke From Orbit" and install the game fresh from Steam.  You may have things lurking in there causing issues that no amount of Mod enable/disable is going to fix.

 

Sorry for not having definitive answer.  Just some things to try.

Sorry forgot to mention scrapping mods and mods that alter settlements.  Not talking about Sim Settlements or Transfer Settlements.

 

These break Precombines and/or cause performance issues which can cause CTD's.  I had always used  Scrap Anything as one of my main mods until I found It can break Precombines.

 

Some of the Settlement enhancement mods can cause textures to phase in/out or other weird things.

If you have it enabled, can you try switching off Weapon Debris in advanced options? Only suggesting as I was having random CTD's myself and I haven't experienced any crashes after disabling this (at least not yet). I recently upgraded to an RTX 2xxx series card and it's (apparently) a common RTX issue. Your issue also seems to be weapon related, so might be worth a try.

 

To check, run Fallout4Launcher.exe and 'Options'>'Advanced' (screenie below)

I apparently do not have option. It would seem like maybe a logical conclusion to whats going on, like the game crashes seconds after a shotgun blast and just when the bullets would hit me or a wall and cause debris.

I am unsure if any of those are the cause. I've been using Scrap Anything for many years and to date hasn't ever caused problems. The current CTD problem seems to be new. The biggest changes I've made to my game since the last time I played over a year ago was adding AAF mods and everything that goes with it. Before this, I don't remember ever crashing in Fallout 4.

 

I also do have ZaZ Skeletons, the mod doesn't add plugins so won't ever appear in a mod list that lists plugins. I was unaware of ZaZout being a problem, I suppose I could remove it, not sure if it will cause problems this late in my game.

 

The longer power lines and build limit increases I did actually notice a bit ago in GCM, I made plans to remove that next time I begin a fresh game. DDproductions mod I do kinda like tho as it gives a choice on how you want to expand it, but I'll look into what GCM does instead for that option.

 

Merging all my armor plugins was something I also planned on doing for a future play thru. A total fresh start will probably be in the works at some point too, cept probably when I decide to rebuild my old PC.

 

Alot of good ideas, but still unsure if its what is causing the issue. Biggest reason I say this is, I can blast Raiders and enemies in the face with Shotguns all day long early levels, like I won't crash at all for like the first 20+ levels, about that time I am approaching the 12-24 hour play time mark and thats when I begin to see the problem happen. And then its not always 100%. I've gone 2-3 6 hour sessions with no issue, or I can go 20 minutes and crash twice in a row. Granted once I begin crashing I shelve the combat shotgun and double barrel shotgun and I prioritize enemies who carry one so I could be limiting my crashes by alot.

So I'm on a brand new play thru, going on 4 Days total played time on this character and I've crashed... maybe 2-3 times the entire play thru for combat. Normally at this time in my last 3 play thru's I'd be upwards of a dozen plus crashes during combat and always with Shotgun style weapons. I stop using them around lvl 15 because thats about the time I see it crashing the most, and it happens when enemies use them too.

 

The only thing I did differently was I removed the Singing Settler mod entirely. I've checked the old logs and for some reason, that pops up in the logs right before a crash. So I believe I found the reason for the crashes.

Did use use the fallrim tools resaver to clean your save after removing it? Generally not a good idea to remove certain mods mid playthrough some leave things behind.

Wasn't mid playthrough, I started over a brand new game after it was removed, Original Post was made on my previous playthrough with it installed, I often times crashed every few hours and almost instantly after someone fired a shotgun. In post #6 I linked a log and the very bottom was AkaSingerQuest which is basically from Akanine's Singing Settler mod or so I believe and it was always one of the last things I saw on the log following a crash.

Holy shit I think you solved it. Wish I saw this sooner! Further testing is in order but I do believe that was what was causing the crashes. Tested it out by turning on godmode and running thru camps with raiders with shotguns, even gave myself all the weapons that previously crashed me and nothing happened.

Were you able to confirm that it was CBP? I am experiencing a similar issue and can't figure anything out

Yes, since downgrading from the current CBP to a lesser one solved the issue. No more combat crashes. I think I downgraded to 1.8 for my game.
