feeling down

If it's occasional and sporadic do something like for instance Ark stated - listen to the music.

If it runs long-term consult the specialist - I don't mean specifically psychologist although that's a wise choice. It can be anybody who helps out people e.g. priest, social worker etc.

I'll talk to you. Feel free to Private Message me as I will ask you some questions that may be too personal to share with a entire community.

Here is my basic list to combat simple minor depression. I will make it very clear that if you have noticed these feelings come and go in the past and can sense that it is a pattern (meaning that throughout the year you feel ups and downs like a roller coaster) then you should see a doctor. It takes a real man and woman to admit you are not feeling well. There is no shame in it

1) Sleeping pattern: Make sure you go to sleep early so you can wake up early. Every Psychologist and Psychiatrist will ask you about your current sleeping patterns. If your sleeping patterns are really off this is a concern. Try to get your sleeping patterns in sync with what is considered normal working \ school hours.

2) Diet: This is important because people who are depressed have an overwhelming urge for carbohydrates. STAY AWAY! This is the time to eat healthy. Stay away from fast food and "your favourite comfort foods". Coffee is not your friend when you are feeling down. One cup in the morning no more. Eat an apple instead.

Eat lots of fruits and salades and real red meat (not hamburger or hot dog) and fresh chicken' date=' turkey, pork. Eat lots of nuts and dried fruit for snacks. Stay away from cola and pop. In fact watch the snack food. SUGAR is not your friend when you are feeling down for an extended period of time.

3) *** This is the most important advice.***

-EXERCISE-

The most recent studies on clinical depression coming out of Europe are showing that for minor periods of depression exercise is the most effective treatment. Join a class, go swimming (my fave form of exercise and I do 2x a week) but do something evryday.

If you never have exercised this is the best way to start.

5 situps

5 push ups from your knees

5 side to side waist ups (hands behind head and bending side to side for those love handles)

When it doesn't hurt any more and you find this becomes easy then double it. Keep on doubling until you can do it for 30 minutes. 4-6 weeks and you should easily be able to do it.

Don't push yourself with the exercise but the important thing here is that you are sweating. You need to sweat out the TOXINS (that your own brain is producing) that is making you feel down.

***MOST IMPORTANT***

Seek family, Human Resources if you work at a large corporation but if it is a prolonged problem or you recognize that you have felt this way before, then I insist and lovingly urge you to go see a doctor. If you feel suicidal or if you hear voices to just go to a hospital. Some of the most successful people in the world have these challenges. Get someone to help you conquer it because with the proper professionally help you can find those sweet smells and vibrant colours again.
