MostlySTEP - No CTDs on new game, but after loading a game gives CTD

Recommended Posts

I've recently decided to create a copy of my STEP 2.2.9.1 build and nitpick it into the 2.2.9.2 build, following all changes that were made as stated in the 2.2.9.2 changelog, and double checking the mod list order on the STEP guide, as well as doing some research on mod load order.

However, I am at an impass with a very odd CTD.

I can start a new game with my mod list, and the mods load fine, CreatureFramework loads fine. I decided for a full test to never activate the SexLab mod in the MCM menu (or even open the MCM menu for that matter). I can play for a good long while, Hadvir meets his friend in Riverwood, we have "dinner", I take his stuff, and exit the home... and then I went afk for about 15 minutes, came back ... damnit it's night time, so let's load the last save when I came out of the house. Not even a minute later, a CTD occurs. But not a normal CTD. This time around, Skyrim freezes for about a second, then shows the "Skyrim has stopped working" window instead of simply crashing to desktop.

I then attempted to reopen Skyrim through MO, and reload the save. Loads fine... crash after 1 minute. WTF? This is a fresh new save file? I've never seen something like this.

The CTD only occurs after loading a save file. I even tried doing this all over again, getting to a good point after the new save... Saving and quitting to desktop, then loading after starting Skyrim up again... still get a CTD after about a minute. Is the game not saving certain data correctly?

Here is my load order:

I have a fresh DynDOLOD generation.

What am I doing wrong?

By the ways, this happens in the Keep at the beginning of the game too. So it can't be Riverwood.

What am I doing wrong?

Playing a Creation Engine game with >1 mod installed? : \

After I reinstalled the game following an extended perior of not playing, I was having semi-reliable crashes (~75% of the time) when approaching Riverwood, even with most everything disabled in MO; the game was basically vanilla. In a fit of desperate annoyance and based on the recommendation of a random post somewhere, I installed NVAC. Bam, no more crashes, several potential crashes logged.

I'm not going to promise that it'll work, because Skyrim is Skyrim and I have about 50 fewer mods installed than you do, but it's something to try at least.

Enabling SKSE's memory allocation feature (see this), or being lazy and getting SSME, might not be a bad idea either.

Yeah I've already installed the SKSE memory allocation recommendations, I can try SSME again I guess, even though SKSE is supposed to not need it.

NVAC wasn't a bad idea, but it didn't help.. (Yes I renamed NVSE to SKSE. :P Even edited the FOMOD to install in MO properly.)

Need I mention this isn't a normal CTD... the game freezes and shows a "Skyrim has stopped working" window above the game.

Update: This happens in the Keep at the beginning of the game too.

Greetings,

have had the same problem.

The Tool Savegame Script Cleaner helped me out (for existing savegame files)

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/52363/?

For the CTD entering The Keep i tried following steps:

- Starting new Game without any mods - worked

- Starting new Game with all mods - CTD, entering the Keep

- Check Skyrim files for any errors (Steam)

- Open up skyrim launcher for new ini files

- Deleted all Files inside the Skyrim folder (where Plugins etc. are listed)

- Cleaning existing files with TES5Edit (Check LOOT for files which have to been cleaned)

- Checking loadorder with LOOT

- Run FNIS again

- Starting SKSE (last version) and a new game

After all this steps, i had no CTD any more.

Hey Xenodrake and posters! I have also gone through a near-identical process with a cut-down STEP selection (*though I started fresh from a clean slate), & have been going through a lot of trial-and-error crashes & headaches with mixed success. I have been posting about it here, lower down in the Tech Support section but am struggling to find help (it may be that a lot of people have moved on since I last re-installed my game).

Here is my thread with what may be the same issue. I have included load order, .ini's, and now logs:

http://www.loverslab.com/topic/60187-skyrim-fresh-install-getting-loading-screen-of-death-o-o/?p=1519669

I hope you guys have success here, & may even be able to help me if you have the time! Good Luck! :)

Does anybody actually read my OP?! lol. I'm not getting usual crashes just from entering places. I start a new game, and my game runs fine for hours, UNTIL I decide to load any save from said new game. I'm not using old saves with this mod load.

Yes - I had/have that problem too! AND I had crashes from old games, and loading screen of death on both new and old games.

*I found that things settled down a lot after removing the STEP-edited .ini's and getting the Vanilla launcher to generate new ones. I plan to do further testing today. It may be that there are things included in the advised .ini edits which are not good for some users, but I have no clue what.

I've fixed the crashes!

Things I found through research that were causing problems, related or unrelated to my issue:

1. (Probably the major cause) I had old custom Papyrus settings set in my old Mod Organizer Profile, and they got copied over to my new profile. As per most people's recommendations, I know I should never mess with those, but I found a post showing a reputable fix for issues I had with my old profile. Anyways, I removed the entire [Papyrus] section from the Skyrim.ini in MO's Configurator.

2. I thought ZaZAnimationPack hadn't been updated in over a year. I had 6.07. Apparently 6.11 came out less than 2 weeks ago. I updated that.

3. (May not have directly caused the crashes but definitely was a concern) Somehow through installing the Enhanced Lighting for ENB Lite mod, it created a ELE_Legendary_Fs_Wt_Lite.esp file. I did not know you are supposed to install ELE_Lite_v0_95c_Only IL STEP Specific if you are using an ENB and STEP. So I had ELE_Legendary_Fs_Wt_Lite.esp overwriting most things from the STEP Extended Patch because LOOT placed it after the STEP patch. I don't even want to know how many issues this was causing. I first noticed this when delving in my entire load order in TES5EDIT, and I noticed it overwrote tons of things related to lighting and such, especially things from Vividian ENB I was using. I had a feeling that was a bad thing, and now after removing it, I'm seeing less stuttering during gameplay in my first 10 minutes of play.

4 (in addition to 3). Sadly, because the DynDOLOD generation from the old load order made it require the ELE_Legendary_Fs_Wt_Lite.esp as a master, I had to regenerate DynDOLOD all over again. Ugh... but worth the result I have to say. I can play Skyrim again!! YAAY. And this time with many less bugs I'm hoping. I can't wait.

I have to say... lesson learned... Never add/remove mods during a playthrough. I did that a horrific number of times during my last load order, and now I can see why it's such a bad idea. It would be a dream world for every mod author to make a proper uninstallation function, but yeah. That will never happen. Even then it probably would be impossible to fully clean the save file.

What sucks now is if I want to follow that rule from now on, I have to be solid in my mod list decision, or else there are so many things I could regret and not change later. Jeez. I should never have started up Skyrim modding, but the original game just wasn't interesting enough to me.

And now this post has become a Skyrim life story. Fuck. (Excuse my Argonian)

I blame the chickens. G'night everyone.

Glad you were able to fix it up, Xenodrake! ^_^

Ahhh - you might've accidentally clicked the option for Falskaar & the other non-Bethesda DLC during install, if that showed up in your load order. I installed the regular ELE file, because I don't have the Hearthfire DLC, which the STEP ELE version *REQUIRES*. I figured I'll see how it goes - LOOT didn't seem to have any problems or conflicts...
