Floating Teeth Bug

On starting a new playthrough, I noticed whenever I was in third person, I could see my character's detached mouth floating at some static point in the middle of nowhere. For whatever reason, the mouth doesn't want to stay attached to the character. For every other NPC, whether they're using the same body or not, the mouth stays attached.

 

I've seen a thread saying this might be due to a skeleton issue, but I can't make sense of it. I have XPMSE (v4.8) and nothing is overwriting the human skeletons.

 

I already tried reinstalling XPMSE, uninstalled facial animation mods (potential conflict with Racemenu), and tried adjusting the mouth part slider in Racemenu, but no luck.

 

Anyone seen anything like this?

I do use racemenu, I tried using srm to change the mouth part and it worked for the first time the mouth was open, then it switched back to having no mouth.

 

The values also changed for mouth part- I switched from 0 to 1 and after the mouth was opened it went back to 0. I'll try saving immediately after and reloading to see if it helps

 

Edit: No luck. Same thing happened as before.

I've seen this same thing happen before. I didn't realize at the time that it was my own character's mouth, and it took me a bit to even realize that it was a set of teeth and not just a random, floating object, since you can only see the teeth from one side. I'm not a knowledgeable person when it comes to mods or how they work, but I just recently ran into a similar problem regarding horns from the Horns Aplenty mod (https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/41022). My horns kept vanishing all the time, and eventually (by sheer luck) I happened to notice them floating in mid-air nearby, and they're only visible in third-person. It happens whenever I load a save, and also whenever my character interacts with any sort of auto-undressing feature. It does it other times too, although I haven't pinned down exactly what causes some of the more random-seeming instances. Going into Racemenu and forcing it to update by moving the slider makes them come back, but only until they go away again. My teeth don't seem to do it nearly as much as my horns do, but I honestly might just not be noticing. It's way less obvious when my teeth aren't in my character's mouth than when her giant, glowing horns are no longer protruding from the sides of her skull.

 

Anyway, while looking for a fix to that, I saw a bug report on the Horns Aplenty bug page where the mod author seemed to think it had to do with the AE update for Racemenu. Also saw that someone else was having it happen to both their horns and their teeth, so I would think the two must be related.

 

I pulled a quote from the Horns Aplenty mod author regarding what the issue might be:

"Based on my experience making and testing this mod prior to AE, I'm fairly certain it's some sort of function call Racemenu makes to let the sliders do their thing got tweaked during the AE update, which now makes it so that upon loading a game it fails to attach the horn model to the player head properly until you forcibly refresh it by changing the slider and then setting it back.
The closest thing to a workaround would be some kind of script call to update that function on loading the game, so that it snaps the horns back to your model, but I wouldn't really know where to start with making such a workaround."

 

I don't have a solution (that's how I wound up here, actually), but I saw a connection and thought I'd comment in case the info might be useful to someone smarter than me.

 I assume they float at the center of the cell. So if you go to the whiterun giant camp and fly up high into the air you'll find your teeth? ?

 

Anyhow, this smells like a skeleton or mesh problem. XPMSE, if you're not already using it. And since reinstalling XPMSE was already mentioned, keep in mind that if you're using MO2,  reinstalling a mod will do nothing when it comes to conflict resolution. Vortex has its own funny things it does, don't know what effect reintalling has over there.
