NPC Voices Changing Mid-Game

Hello all, 

I posted about this before, a few months ago, but I have a few updates that might hopefully lead to SOME help coming my way. My issue is that NPC voices are changing mid-game. Always to the same voice - a generic female voice. With the voice change, their script changes as well - previous idle dialogue just replaced with . . . well, not much of anything.

Previously, I had assumed that the issue was regarding only modded NPCS with custom voices, but on a new save game something else has occurred: Blake Abernathy's voice as has changed. At first, his script still existed (presumably because I was still in a quest with him) but his voice was totally gone - see here: 

 

 

Then, after I completed the quest, it changed to this: 

 

This is the same voice that the previous NPCS were changing into, the exact same bug. I had thought it had something to do with them being custom, but clearly I was mistaken. Anyone have any ideas? In due dillegence, I tried searching the issue again - I found the console command for changing an NPC voice - cf "ObjectReference.SetOverrideVoiceType" VOICEID - but it didn't work, even after trying to change him using that console command to the voiceID he has listed in FO4Edit.

There's one issue I've found that I think is tied to Sexual Harassment, it seems like when an NPC is trying to talk to you it can mute other NPC's voiced dialogue.  The only work around is to start talking to all the NPC's nearby to see which one it is.  I think there's also an option in the MCM so that it will tell you when you are getting approached.  However, I've never seen that issue cause a voice change.

 

The only thing I can suggest off the top of my head, is to open FO4Edit and hit OK so that it loads all your mods.  That might take a minute.  Then hit the + sign next to Fallout4.esm. 

In the Editor ID field, type Blake and hit enter.  This will find Blake Abernathy's record under the "Non-Player Character (Actor)"

Click on his record and look on the right hand side to see what other mods you have that modify or include him.  For me, it's Nuka Ride.  But I don't see that in your load order.

You can also click on the Referenced By tab and see what mods show up there. 

He's supposed to use VTCK - Voice "MaleBoston [VTYP:00023323]"  but after re-reading your post I see you already know that. 

 

Something I read yesterday was due to an issue I encountered where I was starting to get the cryogenic array garbled vault 111 voice lines when going into interior spaces after visiting vault 111 with Another Life as my alternate start mod.  And I saw that the solution involved doing a setstage on dialoguevault111 to 100.  So, maybe something similar can fix this, if we could figure out what the ID of his dialogue is for the quest?

We can see all the "dialogue quests" in the referenced by tab.  An example of that is DialogueAbernathyFarmBlakeConnie1 [QUST:00071DDE]. 

 

I don't remember how to get stages or how to find out how many stages there are.  But if he's somehow beyond the end stage, maybe setting his dialogue quest to the right stage will help?

The other suggestion I have is to keep Sexual Harassment disabled if you are anywhere near a quest NPC.  Unfortunately it can cause some problems.

I decided to try to see if Sexual Harassment was messing with him - I disabled and then loaded up again. No dice, still no voice. A bit more testing though, and I'm not sure the command to change voice even works  - I tried to apply it to a few other NPCs and didn't have any luck.

Did you ever find a solution? Im having the same problem myself, but its kinda game breaking since it happened with a quest npc from a mod im using called Sim Settlements, and now i cant talk to him.

I have the same issue, with Jake. I tried pretty much everything I found online but no dice. I suspected a bunch of things and tried a lot out for hours with no success. My suspicions are indeed Sexual Harassment or AAF Violate, since those two mods had some data on him. Could even have been caused by Crime and Punishment.

 

Edit 1: What I did in order to be able to keep playing is to create a clone of Jake using the placeatme command. Anytime actual Jake gets stuck, I teleport his clone to me which gets the dialogue going. His clone only speaks the first line of dialogue, then the original Jake starts talking, but he is silent. Lol.


Edit 2: Well, thanks to OP, using the voice change command worked for my case. In case its useful, for Jake:
cf "ObjectReference.SetOverrideVoiceType" XX00E6CF

Replace XX with the Mod Index for SS2.esm - in my case, it was 0D.

 

From what I've seen, in my case, this may have been caused by AAF itself or some other mod due to things like these - AAF itself would mess some voices and not restore them:

I have no knowledge of how other mods deal with changing/muting voices, but I assume something like this was going on. Worth mentioning is that recently installing F4z Ro D-oh made things smoother.

I am not sure what causes it (I thought it was AAF Autonomy) but you can assign voices via the console:

 

Select a target NPC in the console and type:

 

cf "ObjectReference.SetOverrideVoiceType" VOICEID

The basic settler voices are

I am not sure what Jake's voice would be - you would have to dig around to find out.

I think it's caused by AAF - Violate since it appears to happen right after an assault.

This appears to be very similar to a somewhat rare bug in the base game and dlcs; where the game would fail to properly match actor aliases with the associated reference id. This results in named NPCs like Blake and Ada (as an example), becoming generic settler 1 and 2 because the game no longer has a reference to base their behaviour on; but it still needs to model it on something so it falls back to that. Worst case scenario, it fails to even fall back to that and you end up with a mute, cardboard cut out that can't be interacted with at all (My Erickson in far harbour did this after his ai package interrupted our first conversation too many times.) 

 

Since nearly everything in Fallout 4 runs off of some kind of trigger quest, so long as nothing fatal happened (corrupted RefID), generic multi start npc dialogue quests usually repair themselves upon cell/quest refresh, that's why traveling to the glowing sea and waiting a few days fixes that bugged No Name settlement merchant back in Sanctuary. This works fine for your average pipe pistol wielding No Name Settler, not so much with unique quest npcs.

 

Again, using the Nuke World Traders as an example, their entire dialogue is controlled by the quest DLC04DialogueSettlement; which is flagged to run just once upon game load. So if this quest is stopped for whatever reason; be it random bug, script overload, etc, you will be stuck with non interactive traders, essentially forever, since the quest will never be restarted or refreshed.

 

Its not all doom and gloom however, if you happen to know the quest controlling that npc's RefID, you can use the SQV command to check whether or not they have a proper RefID, bugged ones will usually show up as "NONE". From there you can force RefIDs into actor aliases as needed provided certain other conditions are met. Just beware that this is a temporary fix in most cases; what ever caused the Nuka Traders and Erickson to bug in my game got baked into my save; every reload of the game would wipe their RefIDs and I'd have to go through the whole process again. 

 

Also, some npcs seem more resistant to this problem then others, in my setup, Preston tends to holler from the museum balcony in a female settlers voice, revert to his normal voice while holed up with Sturges and Crew, back to female settler while fighting Gristle, to stoic mute while talking to Murphy about the chems, and then back to normal for the journey to Sanctuary lol.

 

Its a bit of a text wall, but hopefully this at least gives you a starting point for finding out whats wrong.
