Backstory: Mary Jasmine Reyes (MJ) is a young aspiring nurse who works two jobs, an office secretary during the day and a bar server at night, in an effort to raise money for her education. It is at her night job that MJ becomes acquainted with a charming American soldier. One thing leads to another, and before long, MJ finds herself pregnant and faced with raising a baby alone, as the GI has received orders to return stateside.
Mary Jasmine continues her industrious pace with two jobs throughout her pregnancy. It is during this time, at the end of her 2nd trimester, that she becomes acquainted with an English executive, Jonathan Sinclair Handy, the Vice President in charge of the Asian and South Pacific division of the company where she works as a secretary. Mr. Handy is dismayed when he learns of MJ's circumstances yet holds her in very high esteem over how she chooses to handle the challenge that has befallen her. One dinner invitation precedes another, until one evening Mary Jasmine doesn't receive the customary invite to dinner, but a small box with a life altering proposal.
The walk down the aisle on the day of the wedding is a bit awkward for Mary Jasmine, but hardly uncommon in a city where young, foreign soldiers choose to sow their wild oats. The service is magical and flawless until the moment of the kiss, when MJ's water breaks at the altar in front of the entire wedding party. Not the ending she dreamt of, but the gift of a precious daughter is better than any other wedding gift she received. Welcome to the world, Jasmine Amihan Handy!
Present day: Jasmine Handy began university with absolute focus: I want to become a physician. After two years of diligent academic study, and a commitment to hard work on the pitch, Jasmine is questioning whether to continue toward her initial goal. Might there be a career for her as a star midfielder? Should she continue her medical studies while pursuing an athletic career or would a hiatus from medicine be in order. Is she suffering delusions of grandeur? Oh, the agony of attempting to serve two masters!
Did I mention she is also the President of the Foxbury Institute Chapter of Delta Nu Sorority? Eeek!
