crash when patrol gets attacked?

I saw a group of Dawnguard and they were attacked by wolves as I ran out of Riverwood, and then as I was about to jump off a cliff to kill the Giant attacking the Companions, I got a CTD. Tried again, got a CTD and after that I decided to wait 2 hours and it didn't crash, so what might be the reason for this? Could it be due to the Populated road mod, or something? Although I don't think it was due to the Dawnguard patrol. I played for 3 hours after that and it didn't crash.

Are you using the Populated Lands, Roads, Paths mod? because I had lots of trouble with that one and ctds until I uninstalled it.

Does the CTD always occur when you approach the giant and the companions? If so it sounds like you overwrote the giant's skeleton with something corrupt/invalid
