I think I just found out what happened. To give context to the experimentation, firstly I updated to Build 375 as I had been advised to. I was suspicious of something, so I created another Sim. Made her first woohoo be with a horse, and voilà; she earned the Horse Breeder trait. My other Sim had her first woohoo with a dog (thus earning her the Dog Breeder trait), and it seems a Sim can't have both traits at once (which is fair, if you think of it).
