Good morning all,

Yeah, im still struggling on this issue and i thought I'd share my papyrus log. Ive done more research since my last thread, I've moved my load order around and I'm still just more confused and angry. I've read through hours of install info and conflicts for each mod. None of them really say much about conflicts and I've even sorted out my papyrus to see whats causing the issue I feel I'm getting closer to fixing this and leaving all you fine people alone. Attached is the complete papyrus log, it filled in with only 10 minutes of game time. Is my problem a script issue?

The crash happens right before I enter one of forsworn burrows. If anyone wants to dedicate help to resolving on this and someone on one for simple tutoring, ill gladly provide to your patreon foundation.

Dude, if the crash happens at an exact time (right before entering Forsworn burrows) then it's 99.9% a mod plugin issue.  Simply apply the process of elimination to find the plugin responsible.  My method is to disable half my mods and if it still crashes then re-enable the mods and disable the other half of the mods -- keep enabling mods until you experience the crash again.  Then you've found which mod plugin was responsible.  You only have about 100 plugins, this should take you less than 10 mins to do.

lol this is like burning your house down because you can't find where the cockroaches are hiding.

I mean, sure, if it crashes in the same area consistently then apply the process of elimination to figure out what it is, but try doing it mentally first. Don't uninstall everything to put it all back in again, it's just a waste of time and could potentially break something.

OP, if it happens before you enter the burrow, think about what's around the player, what's loading, NPCs and buildings, etc. If it happens during a loadscreen when you enter the burrow, think about what's in the burrow that would cause you to crash. The name of the burrow might help.

I'm pretty sure "disabling" mod plugins is not the same thing as uninstalling mods.  Pretty sure.  Run along now.

If anything, the results are still the same. Some mods will REALLY fuck up your save if just simply disabled or uninstalled, especially on OldRim. The Fallouts and Special Edition are a little better in handling such things, but Oldrim really wants to give you a pain in the arse for such a way of troubleshooting.

I would still suggest for OP to think about the type of items and instances that happen in the area, and if they can have the same problem happen when trying to enter/go near other Forsworn areas to confirm if it's an issue with the Forsworn in particular, or just with that Barrow.

No.  Just no.  As long as you don't save your game like an idiot nothing bad will happen.  I 1,000,000% guaran-fucking-tee this.  Disabling mod plugins to find problems for crashes requires the gamer to at least have enough common sense not to save a game that you're just testing on.  Anybody else got any more fucking dumb accusations?

I wasn't going to come back to this but it needed clarification. I know it won't ruin your game, that's why I said it's, "a waste of time and could potentially break something," (if you forget something or accuse the wrong mod which is very likely with that method). Sure, it works, but it's still a bad practice and shouldn't be encouraged, especially to someone literally asking for a push in the right direction.

Wow.  Contradict yourself much with hypocritical thinking?  "It won't ruin your game... but it could potentially break something"???? What?  LMFAO, something's definitely wrong with your brain, kid.

Disabling .esps to test for CTDs is NOT, I repeat NOT, again I just said NOT, seriously I said NOT a dangerous thing to do in the slightest as long as you don't save over your current game.  There's no reason to ever save over your current game while you're disabling .esps and testing for game crashes so this shouldn't even have to be said.

It's a completely safe practice and does not take long, therefore it's especially recommended to do this if your game keeps crashing at the same spot and you don't know why.

Bro relax, I’m just confused by the multiple forum posts I’ve read. They contradict on what you should do. I usually google the issue and I just become more confused.

Im not sure if I’m doing the right way anymore. I found the name, it’s Serpents bluff, when I open the door it crashes. However, I misinterpreted what you meant and I unchecked the mods in MO. The game doesn’t crash there anymore now that half of my mods are uninstalled. So I’ve been doing stress tests, which so far has crashed at whiterun draw bridge. It appeared black and didn’t render since I speedmult there then I crashed shortly after. Then another crash in another random field. Please understand that I’ve been at this for months before I came to the forums for help and I haven’t played a lick since I came back due to these crashes.

Do I have too many scripts, is there a mod in my load order that you guys don’t reccomend? The “Do not use” mod list hasn’t been updated since 2016. I did notice the papyrus has errors for mods I don’t have, it’s odd because loot and Wyre bash says I’m good. Also it gave errors for shit I don’t know what it means.

Well, if you're crashing in other places now, this is new information.
Most people don't recommend it but I use it with no problems and that's:  Skyrim Save Game Cleaner https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/52363/
What I would do if I were you is if you find over 50+ orphaned scripts when you use the Cleaner then the best idea would be to just start a new game.  Make sure you've installed all the mods you want and make sure you've updated them and got rid of any mods that you discovered to be problematic.  If you don't start a new game, be prepared for more glitches and CTDs and mods not working as they're intended.  That's no fun.

90% of people's Skyrim problems are caused by installing and uninstalling mods in the middle of their game.  Everybody's Skyrim game is based on their save files therefore save files are the real holy grail here.  If you decide you want to install a mod in the middle of a game but then you uninstall it later because you don't like it anymore then you need to make sure you go back to your save file BEFORE you installed that mod.  It's really simple if you think about it.

As long as you treat your save game with care, CTDs will be virtually non-existent.  Bethesda's engine still sucks and vanilla Skyrim is still buggy so expect a crash once in a blue moon but overall this should be no big deal.
Normally you can still install basic mods like armors and weapon mods in the middle of playing Skyrim but anything with scripts or anything big like town overhauls are a no-no.  I still install follower mods in the middle of gameplay but if I don't like the follower and uinstall them then I revert to the save game before the follower was installed.  I've been playing Skyrim like this for the past 2 years with 250 plugins and I crash maybe once a week.  Maybe.  I'm surprise I don't crash more often.

Well I’m still going off a fresh install so I have no save games that I’m committed to, they’re all just tester saves, once I screw with the mods I delete that save and return to the place i crashed at. I mean I’ve been doing this since 2011 but with mods updating and changing, I’ve just gotten a bit behind. So I used to use Aniatriax’s  guide which like you said if made correctly, results in Crashes once in a blue moon. Since then, he has removed that guide, tried to create an updated guide. Haven’t found a guide that was as well rounded since.

So so when I ask for things like advice, I’m really just looking for instructions to follow to get back where I was. Man, it was 95% perfect. (Lol)

Im not home right now but I’ll just keep poking at more hours of troubleshooting with the advice you have generously given. Thank you!

S.T.E.P. guide is good, simple to follow and comprehensive. Gets you a good, stable installation.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey yall,

So, after two weeks of tweaking with STEP I've gone through all kinds of trouble shooting. Ive messed up, had issues, did it again. Tonight, I've spent my only day off, set everything aside and read over the STEP guide then went through what you guys posted. When I was done, I started Skyrim, made my character, went to the outside (used to crash upon heading to a Forsworn Barrow) and I' crashed immediately. Before posting again, I looked at other topics especially the CTD crash dump. I edited my SKSE.ini, but no crash dump was made. FYI, before starting all of this, I COMPLETELY uninstalled everything (all mods) and started from scratch. I'm not using any save games.

The current problems I'm seeing is:

1.No volume in game (although I'm sure this is a simple issue)

2.When I installed the STEP guide, i didnt qualify for STEP core or Extended, the FOMOD automatically selected me for None, so that baffled me.

3. I crash when I go outdoors, haven't gone anywhere else.

4. I get an Dual sheath redux error saying its not properly patched even though I have patched and I enabled the DSR output of any overwrite.

I'd like to know, If this STEP guide, didnt include other mods like Realistic Lighting Overhaul, is there a certain way its meant to be installed? I'm concerned that any extra mods I install with make an even larger issue. Lastly, and simply put, why the hell am I crashing after ALL THIS WORK?!

Edit: I do know these four mods need cleaning, but they wouldnt, or shouldnt be the source of an exterior crash. This is just a test run for stability.

The current problems I'm seeing is:

1.No volume in game (although I'm sure this is a simple issue)

Meaning: no functionnal volume sliders, or no sounds in game ... Forgive me I'm not English native.

For this last - and in case you encounter that error, I've had that problem long ago making a complete and clean re-install of Skyrim (DVD version install through Steam) and fixed it by re-installing DirectX 9, having Win7 Pro as OS: DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010), if this doesn't work for you, install DirectX Software Development Kit.

But first you can try another method if prefered: go to your game Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\DirectX10 folder and run DXSETUP.exe located here. See if it helps, otherwise use the links provided above.

If after that your problem persists, see if it's not due to a sound mod that you have installed.

Meaning you haven't the required hardware?

My previous playthrough was based on STEP's Skyrim Revisited: Legendary Edition by Neovalen, with a drastic selection of mods, considering the performance of my outdated rig. I had to make important cuts in the list and avoided some mods too demanding in terms of hardware capacity. But in the end the game was a visually pleasant one, and satisfying in terms of stability.

Just one question, why do you use ELFX with RLO ? They are both making the same job with a different result, certainly, but ... I don't know why you do combine the two except that they eat resources for nothing? Can you enlighten me a bit more on this subject please?

Must be made at the end and put at the very bottom of your load order? I don't see your Dual Sheath Redux Patch.esp assuming you put it in your Bashed Patch, 0.esp

Incorrect settings?

In Settings > Other Settings, select the following:
 Left Biped Slot: 54
 Right Biped Slot: 45

A missing requirement? Sorry for not being more helpfull here.

Combination of Vivid Weathers, Vividian ENB, Enhanced Lighting for ENB version 0.95b (Only IL), Enhanced Lights and FX, Relighting Skyrim version 3.6a.

Take a look at Skyrim Revisited: Legendary Edition by Neovalen.

Just a bonus to see the result with Optimised HD Textures and Skyrim at High settings only.

Papyrus.0.log

a couple of notes that may help (or may not)

1 - XPMSE is way high in load order (#16) i find that (personally) it is better to load XMPSE just before bashed patch. i would suggest you move it to after everything else,

except bashed patch , and other patches (stuff like bodyslide output etc).

if you use MO it simply drag and drop, if you use any other mod manager i would suggest you move it in load order, then re-install it to be sure nothing has

overwritten it (the re-install is a safety thing mostly, better safe than sorry).

2 - load order issue in spots 74 to 79 (bashed patch did not catch because it occurs after that), both the mods in spots 74 and 77 are looking for a master file,

     which is in spot 79

3 -  in reference to #3 of your post about crashing when you go outdoor - i see that you use AS-LAL, so my question is when exactly do you crash??

and do you crash with all the starts it provides? if so when exactly do you crash? when using the bed? after loading screen?  all this information

can be helpful in narrowing down the problem.

4 - in reference to STEP, while i agree that it is a good starting point (for making an nice Skyrim and hopefully making it more stable), i would always suggest

doing it manually for two reasons, 1 you know exactly what you put in, and 2 you can choose which parts are installed (you can choose to skip parts that

you do not want whether for looks or because your system cannot handle it).

hope the information is helpful

Ok so to both of you, thank you for the responses. I always forget to alter my load order and that LOOT isnt always a catch all.

My sound issue and Dual Sheath Redux is fixed, thanks Fifoo.

However, I still crash right when i go outside. Valcon, to answer your question, it crashes during the loading screen wait. I'll start a new character, go to the alternative start menu, select "I am camping in the woods" (since I know going outdoors is the problem) and go to bed. The screen goes black, the loading screen with my level and captions appear for about 2-5 seconds, then CTD. I never see the outside or hear outside audio.

The load order issues 74-79 have been fixed too. Here is my corrected load order.

Thanks to your guys' help, i feel like im getting closer. Fifoo, no offense, but that guide looks like a two day venture. But I could take some ideas from it.

I'll start a new character, go to the alternative start menu, select "I am camping in the woods" (since I know going outdoors is the problem) and go to bed. The screen goes black, the loading screen with my level and captions appear for about 2-5 seconds, then CTD. I never see the outside or hear outside audio.

Sorry to pass valcon767, please excuse my intervention on this issue. It seems possible that it has something to do with the cell that you load into when choosing your AS-LAL option. And I wonder if it's not related to LOS, ELFX, and/or a mod that modifies this cell and needing patches. Have you tried loading the others starting options from AS-LAL?

While browsing some Forums (Steam, Reddit, Nexus, ...), I came across several findings:

"None of the Weather mods should be touching ELFX edits (because they should only touch region and/or weather records, not cell records), nor should LOS."

"LOS+ELFX: They're not compatible surprisingly. Elfx exteriors is known to add lanterns and light sources near or ontop of the same places as LoS. You can actually find compatibility patches to make both more consistent with each other."

Lanterns Of Skyrim ELFX patch. Lanterns Of Skyrim ELFX Exteriors Consistency Patch.

"AFT+RDO: a patch is needed for both to work properly. CORRECT LOAD ORDER: - AmazingFollowerTweaks.esp - Relationship Dialogue Overhaul.esp - RDO - AFT v1.66 Patch.esp (NOTE: The plugins do not need to be placed right next to each other, it's fine if other mods are placed between them. As long as they are in the correct order relative to each other, you should be fine."

Make sure they all have their patches as I don't see them in your load order.

Thanks to your guys' help, i feel like im getting closer. Fifoo, no offense, but that guide looks like a two day venture. But I could take some ideas from it.

None offense taken, it was only to give you an example among many others.

To answer your question, yes I have tried as lal in different options but I still crashed in exterior cells. I don’t think AS LAL is connected with the crashes.

i also disabled the weather plugins but I still crashed. Honestly as you say I can’t think of any other reason the outdoors is still crashing. I adjusted my enboost and other small settings as well as memory allocation. Still crashes. I keep cracking at it but it keeps falling over. Do I need to uninstall the weather mod totally to test the crashing or will removing the plugin work just as well? I’ll try those patches you recommended soon.

if you use MO deactivating the entire mod in the left pane will do (if it is an FNIS using mod you will have to rerun FNIS though)

if using NMM i am not sure

the AS-LAL question i was trying to ask (i should have been more clear) was : if you choose a "start as a patron at a local inn" option (does not matter which inn),

does it crash when loading into the inn, or does it load into the inn but crash when you try to leave the inn??

if it crashes when loading the inn itself - that most likely means a skeleton, clothing, or other body related issue

if that loads the inn, but crashes when leaving - that means it (probably) is not a skeleton, clothing, or body specific issue.  if this is the case i would start

checking weather and terrain affecting mods to find the culprit

hope this information is helpful

Hey!

Yeah i've tried the inn. It happens when I'm leaving the inn. I'm able to load inside bandit camps, rooms, or internal cells just fine. I am using MO, but what i was saying was, someone else in this thread mentioned disabling plugins ins is another good way of testing mods without actually uninstalling them. So i tried that, I disabled the weather plugin. I was able to make it to the whiterun plains when I selected "I'm a outlaw in the woods" I didnt crash but I did see cloud stutter in the background, it was on the mountain tops in the background. I restarted my game and tested in another area, a local inn. I loaded inside the inn, and crashed when I tried to go into the whiterun city.

Sorry if I'm repeating someone, I didn't read everything in this thread.

What I would do in your place is to start with the bare miinimum of mods in the LAL cell. By bare minimum I mean Unofficial fixes, Crash fixes and LAL.

Start a New game, make a character, make a save, then use the LAL statue and start a game. If it doesn't crash as usual, quit. Add 1-2 mods (do LOOT, Bashed patch and FNIS if necessary), load your LAL cell save, config those mods if necessary, use statue again. Rinse and repeat until you find which mod crashes you. Since you add 1-2 mods at a time, it will be very easy to pinpoint the culprit.
