Net Neutrality

It is a serious issue.

And the popup is to remind/make people aware of it.

There is a serious possibility that is this will go on, sites like LLab can be offline.

To understand what you guys are talking about, would it be possible to upload the popup in question. I for one don't get any popups, neither here nor elsewhere. Thanks in advance.

No this is not "a Trump thing;" Telecomm companies (Time Warner and Comcast especially) have been trying to kill Ne Neutrality for years because it would mean more money for them, and currently the head of the FCC (the government body in charge of enforcing Net Neutrality and monitoring/watchdoging Telecom companies) is against Net Neutrality, and there's a vote to possibly repeal it happening... tomorrow I believe. He's been the head of the Commission since 2011 when the Republican Party Leader (Mitch McConnell) recommended him for the position in 2011, his term (he was reappointed in January) will last until ~2022, so expect to have to do this a lot.

It's incredibly important you write/call/what have you your representatives in Congress about this so that they know what the people want and vote accordingly.

Edit: Link to the wikipedia page for Net Neutrality for those interested: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Net_neutrality

Further Edit: The order the FCC passed in 2010 that essentially lays out the tenets of Net Neutrality for a more simple understanding, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FCC_Open_Internet_Order_2010 (Ajit Pai, the current head of the FCC voted against this btw)

So was this a Trump thing or what ?? Fuck donald Duck Trump.

Already letting this issue bypass the no politics rule because of how important it could be to the future of the site. So let's not turn it more political than it already is, please.

But suffice to say, this has been an issue in the past. However, a change of leadership at the FCC by a new administration has brought it back to the forefront in an increasingly dangerous way.

Couldn't agree more daddy Ashal. :)

It's pointless for me to contact my representatives... I live in a certain state with certain political leanings.  My representatives were pushing the idea of the "internet kill-switch" during the Obama era, and are notorious for not listening to their constituents at all.

Ending net neutrality is exactly what they want.

Pai was actually first appointed under Obama (and re-appointed under Trump), his policies have not changed. Some other companies have, and one could make arguments that the new administration has had an interesting effect on the roles large corporations and lobbying are playing in the government, but this issue is not solely the fault of one party (or president) or another.

Man that bites. real problems are most countries are copycat the other so if USA is doing this Europe won't fall far behind. they already passed a bill in my country to ease drop on the public. Just in the name to combat terror. at least that is what they make of it.

Guys, just try to avoid discussion of politics.

This is against rule #8

All discussions on Net Neutrality are welcome.

But do not blame a party or another.

So is this something in the making or are they already try to enforce this now ?

Currently it's enforced, which is good, but the FCC is voting to repeal it, which is bad and why you need to write your congressmen.

He wasn't made chairman until current administration, just given a counsel role.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajit_V._Pai#Career

He was confirmed unanimously by the United States Senate on May 7, 2012 and was sworn in on May 14, 2012 for a term that concluded on June 30, 2016.[1] Then Pai was designated chairman of the FCC by President Donald Trump in January 2017 for a five-year term

it is not money in question

freedom of information is what bother politicians

you can control newspapers and TV by appoint loyal or sacking disloyal

but on internet you cannot control truth and spread lies

You do realize that, in America, the government can neither appoint, nor sack, anyone involved with a private company, yes? This is why your comment is nonsense. The US government does enough shit that's alternately horrible and stupid without making up stuff like this.

In the past that might have been true, not so much anymore.

Never forget that in America, the government can at any time they choose take anything and everything you own and do what they will with it and its 100% legal. You dont actually own anything here.

And setting aside the fact that they can use force to take from you, they also use a much more common tool... taxes.

They will tax you to death in the private sector in any and every way they can think of.

As for the main topic of net neutrality:

Its dead jim.

There are so many different influential groups calling for the death of it that its going to happen if you fight it or not.

Politicians, reporters, gov officials, regular joes, useful idiots, feminists, BLM, whoever whatever. There is enough money and screeching voices to make it happen.

Sadly, we might come to a point where violence will be the next step... i fear that day.

Everyone needs net neutrality. Having a group control something so vast and useful calls into question the morality of those seizing control and if ever they could be trusted to do the right thing in any instance. It works fine as it is now and most people like it this way so if it ain't broke don't break it.
